About this property

Beautiful 5 Bed Stone House, Quiet, Big Garden. This cottage/gite is in a rural setting.

La Goupilliere is a spacious detached 18th century stone house with 5 bedrooms, set in private gardens of about 2.5 acres. The house is situated at the end of a private lane, is not overseen and offers views across open fields. It is ideal for relaxing, very quiet at night, and offers a truly de-stressing experience.
The house has been owned by the same English family for the last 8 years who have enjoyed furnishing it with locally-purchased items. The house is sympathetically decorated to enhance the character of the property and has some wonderful granite stone features.
The house is just 2 miles from our closest town, Percy which is situated on the Route de Liberte (D999) which is the route the Allied Troops took after the D-Day landing to recapture France from the Germans during the Second World War in 1945. In Percy you will find shops and a supermarket. The larger town of Villedieu Les Poeles is 10 minutes away and has an indoor swimming pool. Villedieu has an array of interesting shops, a large supermarket, restaurants and is famed for its pretty copper ware.

There are a number of local villages to explore and French markets to visit on Tuesday (Villedieu-les-Poeles), Wednesday and Saturday (Gavray), Saturday (Percy) each offering a range of local fresh produce to buy and local crafts too. Nearby attractions include the unspoilt Atlantic beaches, Mont St Michel, the Normandy Landing beaches and Museums, Bayeux, Dior Museum, golf, zoos, go-karting and some splendid, un-pretentious but yummy restaurants....and loads loads more.

About the Owner/Advertiser, Mrs Elizabeth Bradshaw

We are an English family, living in Buckinghamshire with 3 boys, now teenagers, who have grown up holidaying in our house in France

Year property purchased 2008
Why this location? We wanted somewhere where the kids could have freedom and space, and which was easily reachable for a long-weekend, without having to commit to the expense of flights
Unique benefits of property We bought the house for ourselves, and this is reflected in the quality and condition. It's a beautiful house, with a huge garden, ideal for a large family or 2 families sharing

The Owner Recommends

Alligator Bay

(North of Mont St Michel) – for the reptile lover – exit A84 at J32 to avoid traffic. Our boys love this. Look up the feeding times for the crocs.

A wonderful town with a variety of shopping opportunities. The historic Bayeux tapestry is world famous and the tour includes free audio guides. Worth booking or getting there early.

Christian Dior Museum Granville

A beautiful pink house in Dior’s birth place, Granville, displaying a huge range of Dior’s designs through the ages. Numbers in the house are limited so you may need to queue. The gardens are beautifully manicured and free to walk around and there is a lovely café serving tea in proper china teapots and cups and saucers!! Have lunch at Le Port

On the Caen ringroad. A good selection of rides for a range of ages. Not too scary but worth a day out for children up to 12 years. Older than that may want more thrills.

Go-karting, paintball

Le Parc Sainte Pience – excellent – outdoor karting for all ages and speeds –

Mont St Michel

A must see venue. The new E12 park and ride system may mean it’s a bit crowded so pick a quieter time to visit. There are a variety of restaurants at Mont St Michel – not cheap and not always very good. Visit La Fermerre just to the south of the park and ride - very good food and the Plat du Jour is always good value

Normandy Beaches and Museums

Heading towards Caen, and about an hour away, there are a selection of D-Day landing beaches to visit -Juno, Sword, Gold, Utah and Omaha are all within easy day-trip reach There are a large number of museums to visit, thoughtfully designed to sympathetically display the fascinating artefacts from the Second World War. Museums of note are: • St Mere Eglise – recently redesigned – has amazing interactive displays. • Dead Man’s Corner Museum - St Come Du Mont, Carentan. Small WWII museum with amazing shop. Excellent. Band of Brothers fans will not be disappointed. • Pegasus Bridge – really good museum and a great little café across the bridge in the first house ever liberated in France – famously still run by the little girl who lived there

Zoo at Champrepus, near Villedieu

West of Villedieu – excellent for all ages. Never get bored of visiting and the animals always look happy!

Bungee and Zip

AJ Hackett, Viaduc de la Souleuvre. Superb facility, professionally run. Not just Bungee, but other rides and experiences, and a nice picnic area.

We all had a lovely time staying in this beautiful house. This was our second visit and the setting was perfect for us, with loads of room for the kids to play and run about, as well as a stunning outside area for us all to relax in during warm evenings. We had a lovely meal at a recommended restaurant- Le Krill, and a great time exploring the local area and relaxing on the beach. For those looking for a typically French farmhouse experience away from it all, you won’t be disappointed.

Owner response

La Goupilliere is a beautiful family home situated in a private rural setting which is blissfully quiet yet just 5 minutes from the local town of Percy and 30 minutes to the beach.

We stayed with friends for a long weekend in June so spent our evenings outside on the terrace, the house was clean with all of the creature comforts you would need Wifi, dishwasher, bbq and outdoor seating etc. Bedrooms were all a good size and beds comfortable.

The house not only met but exceeded our expectations it really is a beautiful spot and the owners were very nice to deal with and v helpful with their recommendations on the local area. The only feature we thought of to make it even better is a swimming pool.

Would definitely recommend and hope to be back in the next year.

Owner response

Our extended family group - 2 grandparents, 5 adults (1 disabled) and 2 young children, and all thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The gite is spacious, comfortable (lovely duvets!) and very well equipped, in a beautiful country setting in large grounds. There is a huge, fantastic stone fireplace and plenty of logs/kindling, which we all really enjoyed (even those not usually a fan of log fires), and large oak beams throughout (tall people beware!).

There is lots to see and do in the area - the owners helpfully provided details of places to go, restaurants etc. We only had time to try out the Restaurant du Port in Granville, and were delighted with the seafood choice and quality there.

The 5 bedrooms are all on the 1st/2nd floor, and the 2 bathrooms are on the 1st floor but accessible enough for our disabled son. The children's room (4 single beds) is in an annexe linked to the rest of the house through the kitchen, on the 1st floor, open plan style, above a large playroom with lots of toys and games. This bedroom is great for older children, but we couldn't use it for the 2-and 5-year olds in our group, though they did enjoy the toys!

Tips for new visitors: It can be tricky to find the lane in which the gite is situated at first visit - best not to arrive after dark, and to approach from the east (from Percy), as you can't see the road name sign from the westerly direction. Percy is only 2 miles away, good supermarket, bakers, butcher etc.

Owner response

Thank you for your great review, Mary. We are glad that you enjoyed your stay.
More restaurants to discover next time, then!

Just for additional clarity for those reading the reviews, the 4 single bed room is accessed via a second staircase from the playroom below. This section of the house is fully attached, rather than a separate annex, and the playroom, as Mary says, is accessed via the utility area, off the kitchen.
