When looking for a holiday home, in lower Normandy we came upon La Joliere ‘the pretty place’ an area set high in the rolling hills, on a scenic route, where the air is clean and fresh. We immediately fell in love with the 360 degree views over the glorious surrounding countryside and the large, old stone farmhouse that enjoys sole residency in this magical spot.
With a wood close by that is ribboned by little streams, it is a haven for wildlife and several unusual species of birds. If you mention La Joliere to the locals, they will respond ‘Ah, La Joliere, tranquille!’ And tranquil it is with your nearest neighbours 1/2 kilometre away. However, 2 miles in either direction will bring you to 2 well-appointed villages. We are just 6 miles to the bustling town of Vire with its wealth of restaurants, shops, theatre, cinema, weekly market etc. and direct train line to Paris. We have wi-fi and an indoor games room with pool, table tennis & darts. Outside - boules, badminton and heated swimming pool.
To the left of the hallway is the huge farmhouse kitchen (22ft x 15ft) with its imposing granite fireplace. Set in the fireplace is an enamelled wood-burning stove which you are free to use if you should have a chilly evening during your stay - the log store is close to hand outside. The house has, in any case, electric heating.
In the kitchen you will find a large white farmhouse sink with pine draining dish rack above and long pine worktop to the side with the microwave, kettle, coffee machine and toaster (though we recommend that for breakfast you try the gorgeous croissants from Gathemo's boulangerie two miles away!) freezer, washing machine, dishwasher below and separate spacious larder fridge. To the right of the sink is a shelved larder behind a pair of doors. In the cooking area of the kitchen is a modern 1½ sized stainless steel cooker with cooker hood, and pan shelves above a granite worktop. Also in the kitchen is a large french oak farmhouse table with oak dining chairs
To the right of the hallway is the large half-panelled salon (22ft x 15ft), comfortably furnished with settees, chairs, tables, and french doors to the terrace and garden. Also in the salon are the UK television and dvd player, which are connected to a satelite system that recieves all UK channels, plus many more.
A curved oak staircase leads from the hallway to the first floor which has varnished wooden floors throughout. The landing has two windows affording a panoramic view to the north.
Bedroom one, with one window, contains a pink granite fireplace (not used) double bed with carved headboard and side cupboards, wardrobe, chest of drawers and swing doors leading to the completely tiled shower room with wash basin and shower.

We had an amazing week in La Joilerie - the house felt like home from the moment we arrived. The farm house itself was beautiful - from the fabulous kitchen, to the comfortable sitting room, to each of the four well proportioned, tasteful bedrooms.
Our children (10 months and two) were a bit small for the games room, but I imagine it would be a real hit with older kids, and a great way to keep them occupied if the weather wasn't good.
We were very lucky with the weather (mid twenties most days) which meant we spent most of our time in the beautiful gardens, pool and surrounding countryside. Not forgetting, multiple visits each day to the neighbouring field, to feed the friendly donkeys!
Apart from the necessary trips to the Supermarket (usually in Vire, the biggest town), we did have a few days out, a walk around Lake Datee, Granville and Mont St Michel. However, if you're looking for rest and relaxation, there really is no reason to leave La Joilerie any more than you have to!
Chris and Moria were the perfect hosts, on hand if required but otherwise happy to leave you to your own devices. And the welcome hamper, was a lovely touch!
Only downside Was that on our return, our two year old announced that she didn't want our hose anymore, she wanted her 'other house'! Looks like we'll have to come back to La Joilerie again to keep her (and us) happy!
