Why this location? La Baleine is in a beautiful and tranquil location in the Seine valley. Ideal for mountain biking, horse riding and hiking are the miles of chemins (tracks/ pathways) surrounding the property. Only 5 km from the market town of Gavray with all its local shops bars and restaurants. 25 minutes drive to the beaches. Restaurant and bar is within walking distance of the Gite and cooks on open fire. There is mini golf and a the very well preserved Hambye Abbey is well worth a visit and only 5minutes drive away. Fishing is allowed in the fishing season, on my stretch of the river seine and there are several well stocked lakes nearby. Granville, Coutance and Villdeu Le Poeles are within half hour drive and all have lots to see and do.
Great location for visiting Mont Saint Michel,Bayeux tapestry, landing beaches and much more. We have cycles that can be used to explore this beautiful conservation area.
Unique benefits of property Tranquility, privacy, large private garden, really well equipped with quality appliances, large flat tv, american fridge freezer, dishwasher, lovely warm and refreshing hot tub/jacuzzi, bbq, gazebo, sun loungers, trampoline and swings.
La Baleine is an area of natural beauty with the river running through it. Steeped in wartime history, La Baleine witnessed a large battle at the end of the war. There have been many finds of old shells and wartime memorabilia. I myself found an old German helmet that is displayed in the gite. The name of the village, La Baleine translates to the whale and the reason for this is that there was a fossil of a whale found here which is now displayed in the museum and the local bar/restaurant is called "The Krill" because of this

The Owner Recommends

Well worth a visit to the bell making foundry here and also a quaint little market town with interesting shops bars and restaurants. Has lovely flower displays. Large tourist office with lots of information of local area. The zoo is near here too.

Lovely restaurants overlooking the port. Very ancient old town that is referred to as the Monaco of Normandy because of its Casino. Very interesting shops along characterful winding streets.
A ferry is available from here to Jersey and this makes a very interesting day trip too. All well worth a visit.

Beaches nearby

Brehal is the nearest and it takes about 25 minutes in the car to get to. Wide expanse of beach with parking and easy access.
There are lots of other beaches too including Granville, with its beautiful historic old town, Casino, restaurants , shops and lots more. You can get the ferry to Jersey and enjoy all that is to offer there too.

Mont St Michel

The ever popular and unique destination must not be missed and will never be forgotten.

An excellent house.... we had 2 dogs a 16 year old a five year old and 5 adults the house was very spacious and had a separate lounge which worked really well for us.
The outside space was amazing horses goats table tennis boule and a play area plus a trampoline what more could you want.
The Hot Tub was an added bonus ..
The area is good and plenty places nearby to visit.. would definitely recommend for large groups or family and friends..
Gilly was a good host and very helpful..
We may come back and see you soon 😎

Fantastic house with everything you could need in a holiday. It was easy to travel to historic locations from this base but also just as good to sit in hot tub and look at the billions of stars I forgot were up there. The garden (well acres of fields) were fantastic and our granddaughter and dog were out there for hours with donkey and goats etc. plus all the games / children play area were top notch I can't find faults at all. The big bonus was the owner Gilly who was nearby if needed for advise but otherwise left you to enjoy her lovely property.I cant wait to go again.

Well what can I say..... I wish we hadn't had to come home! The gite was fully equipped with everything we could have wanted, it was very clean and comfortable with plenty of space both inside and out for our family including grandparents to spread out. The hot tub was an amazing place to sit in the evening and watch the sun go down. Gilly was a lovely host and was on hand when we needed her knowledge of the area. Beautiful area of Normandy to explore and we hope to return soon.

We came here for 5 nights on the 14th of July to be greeted by gilly and
Janet. Who were first class hosts. They made us feel very
Welcome straight away. The kids went off to explore the
Fantastic garden and kids facilities which they loved and was
Great to keep them entertained. The house was of a very high
Standard with lovely comfy furniture and beds. It was spotless clean
With lovely added touches such as a welcome basket with bread
Cheese , milk cakes etc .... the owners were right there if we
Needed anything or advice. The hot tub was s lovely added bonus too.
I would definitely recommend this house to anyone and would give it a 5 star rating without
A doubt. If I was coming back to Normandy I would definitely stay here.
( we will definitely be back )
Thanks again gilly and Janet for a lovey enjoyable stay.
Donna. X
