|Why this location?||We had to make our move to France work for us and Normandy is always a favourite holiday destination. It offers so much in terms of lifestyle and holidays and yet is still close enough to family in the UK should we need to return quickly. Summers are pleasantly warm without being too scorching hot and the winters are mild. Most of our guests visit in the summer but spring and autumn are also great times to visit as the weather can often be very good. There is so much to see and experience in this part of France that you will always leave wanting to come back. Beautiful towns, countryside and restaurants - where would France be without its restaurants? A great place for a holiday as well as to live.|
|Unique benefits of property||All three of our gites are located in a beautiful rural context but yet close to all amenities and tourist attractions. The roads are very quite and ideal for walks and cycle rides on our selection of bicycles which we offer free of charge. We are always on hand to help with your holiday but never intrude. If you prefer to be left to your own devices, you will hardly know we are there but if you need help and advice, we are happy to help.|
This elegant spa town is renowned for its waters (Les Thermes). It is also a gastronomic centre and has at least 16 restaurants listed on TripAdvisor along with many activities throughout the summer. Enjoy your lunch then walk around the lake, past the casino and up to the Hotel de Ville (town hall) which is a converted chateau in beautiful grounds. There are also walks through the woods at the edge of the town ideal for wildlife and bird watching. Try the velorail which uses the old railway line running from Bagnoles to Briouze - great fun for the kids – have a look at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4f5RWM4EaIg
The Javron to Mayenne Voie Verte is the old railway line between the two towns. Many old railway lines have been converted into "Voies Vertes" or cycle routes which can be enjoyed with the safety of not having to go on the roads. This véloroute (as it is called) has just had large sections resurfaced and the whole route is easily navigable. As it is an old railway line, there are no steep gradients so can easily be tackled by all family members. Further information can be obtained from the following link http://www.laval-tourisme.com/files/ot-laval/files/voies-vertes-mayenne-2009.pdf
Lassay-les-Chateaux is a beautiful town about 11km from the gites and has just about one of the best preserved medieval chateaux in the whole of France. The town prides itself on being one of France's "Cités de Caractère" and has a delightful rose garden. A great place to enjoy an impromtu picnic or you can sample one of the bars or restaurants in the town centre.
About an hour and a half away, a great day out especially if it is around the Le Mans 24 hours. For 2015 this will be on 13th and 14th June. Outside of the racing season the motor museum at the circuit is well worth a visit and afterwards you can visit the Cathedral of St. Julien, the old city and enjoy a coffee in one of the squares near the cathedral.
About an hour and a half away due west, Mont St. Michel is one of France’s greatest tourist attractions. Visit the abbey, dedicated to the Archangel, St. Michael and the various museums. Advisable to set off early as it is host to around 3 million visitors per year. As the name would suggest, it is a mount and is not pushchair or wheelchair friendly.
A great day out is a visit to the Normandy Landing Beaches. If you want to make a day of it, you can start with a visit to Pegasus Bridge. Then travel west along the coast taking in Sword, Juno and finally Gold beaches. This will take you to Arromanches, site of the famous Mulberry B Harbour. There are museums at both Pegasus Bridge and Arromanches which are well worth a visit. Finally, travel down to nearby Bayeux and visit the Bayeux Commonwealth War Graves Commission Cemetery which should be a fitting finale to your day out.
We have just spent a glorious week in Le Cerisier which is just a great place for some serious rest and relaxation. The gite is really well appointed, everything you need in the kitchen and lovely and clean. Warm and cosy in front of the woodburner too. The garden is huge and though we didn't use it, the new swimming pool looks great. The only passing traffic we saw was a group of people with horses and carriages out for an Easter procession - amazing! Nearby towns of La Ferte Mace and Bagnoles de L'Orne are worth a visit. La Ferte Mace is a pretty town with a huge man made lake and beach with lots of activities. Bagnoles de L'Orne is a fantastic example of the architecture of the "Belle Epoch" with shops, restaurants, bars and cafes. Our hosts, George and Yvette couldn't have been more gracious. They are extremely helpful and once you are settled in they just leave you to get on with your holiday. We will definitely be going again!
Many thanks for such a great review and really happy that you enjoyed your stay here. Whenever you want to come back you will be more than welcome. Thanks again.
This is the second time we have holidayed at this property and the owners keep it to a very high standard
George and yvette are a very knowledgeable couple who are more than willing to share there local knowledge with ideas for restaurants or days out etc
The local area is typically rural france with a small village about two miles away if you want a taste of france away from the tourists this is a ideal location
Not far away is the town of bagnoles dorne which is situated about 10 km away with a lot more amenities loads of nice cafe / restaurants / casino etc all surrounding a lake in the center well worth a visit
Would defiantly recommend this property and area for anybody wanting a relaxing holiday in lovely surroundings at a very reasonable rates
Many thanks for the review Howard - it is really nice to know that all our efforts are appreciated and so happy you had such a good holiday. It was lovely to see you all again and to get to know you all even better this year. We do hope to see you again sometime. Best wishes, George & Yvette.
This is our third visit to La Maison Neuve and each visit has been better that the last!! George and Yvette remain the perfect hosts and the whole complex is fantastically maintained and equipped to a high standard.
Try lunch at “La Maison d’Andaine” in Juvigny-sous-Andaine. 12 euros gets a buffer starter, main, cheese, dessert wine and coffee - about 20 minutes away but well worth the trip.
Bagnoles de l’Orne is a great place to spend a couple of hours in a pavement cafe people watching! If you are lucky enough to be here for Bastille Day (14th July) then the fireworks display is fantastic and really must be seen. The horse racing on the 14th is also a great experience.
Other things we’ve done on our visits here are Mont St. Michel, Domfront, Mayenne, Alencon and Caen. There’s so much to do within an hour’s drive so get out and enjoy!
Thanks again George and Yvette - you really go out of your way to ensure we always have a great holiday. Looking forward to the next time.
Lovely to see you all again - and how the children have grown! You really do make time to enjoy yourselves here and we're so happy you came again as it is always a pleasure. Thanks for a great review and if you want to come again next year, you would be very very welcome.
This was our first Family Gite holiday, we have all camped in the past and we were looking forward to a relaxing time in a rural French idyll. And thats what we got! The gites are beautifully maintained, with all the character and charm that you would imagine, furnished thoughtfully with very comfortable and authentically French furniture. The Gite is equipped with everything you would need, (I automatically packed tea towels, washing up liquid etc, only to find all supplied) and if there is anything you do need, the Gite Hosts George and Yvette are more than happy to supply it. (We asked for a cafetiere!) There are even bikes that you can borrow to ride up to the village or out to one of the local restaurants (George will make the reservation for you and give you directions) the lanes surrounding the Gite are perfectly safe and the local motorists give you plenty of space as they slowly pass! (Not like the UK)
We really felt that we had 'struck gold' when we arrived at this beautiful place, and even though the weather was not the best at the beginning of the week, this did not spoil our experience.
I would not hesitate to recommend this as a lovely holiday setting if you really want to get away to peaceful, rural and friendly France. And you could ask for better Hosts than George, Yvette and Hugo the very friendly dog. We really felt as if we were leaving old Friends by the time we had to leave. We would love to return, all of us have been missing our little retreat since
Thank you for a wonderful review, it was lovely having you all here. Very pleased that you all got on well with Hugo our dog. He is very friendly though we always make sure guests like dogs and if they don't, he has his own secure garden to play in. If you do return, we would be delighted to welcome you back. Thanks again.
