About the Owner, Mr George Canty

We, George and Yvette, have been married for over 30 years, have two wonderful grown up children and now live permanently in France with our French Labrador, Hugo.

Year property purchased 2011
Why this location? We had to make our move to France work for us and Normandy is always a favourite holiday destination. It offers so much in terms of lifestyle and holidays and yet is still close enough to family in the UK should we need to return quickly. Summers are pleasantly warm without being too scorching hot and the winters are mild. Most of our guests visit in the summer but spring and autumn are also great times to visit as the weather can often be very good. There is so much to see and experience in this part of France that you will always leave wanting to come back. Beautiful towns, countryside and restaurants - where would France be without its restaurants? A great place for a holiday as well as to live.
Unique benefits of property All three of our gites are located in a beautiful rural context but yet close to all amenities and tourist attractions. The roads are very quite and ideal for walks and cycle rides on our selection of bicycles which we offer free of charge. We are always on hand to help with your holiday but never intrude. If you prefer to be left to your own devices, you will hardly know we are there but if you need help and advice, we are happy to help.

The Owner Recommends

Bagnoles de l'Orne

This elegant spa town is renowned for its waters (Les Thermes). It is also a gastronomic centre and has at least 16 restaurants listed on TripAdvisor along with many activities throughout the summer. Enjoy your lunch then walk around the lake, past the casino and up to the Hotel de Ville (town hall) which is a converted chateau in beautiful grounds. There are also walks through the woods at the edge of the town ideal for wildlife and bird watching. Try the velorail which uses the old railway line running from Bagnoles to Briouze - great fun for the kids – have a look at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4f5RWM4EaIg

Javron-les-Chapelles to Mayenne Voie Verte

The Javron to Mayenne Voie Verte is the old railway line between the two towns. Many old railway lines have been converted into "Voies Vertes" or cycle routes which can be enjoyed with the safety of not having to go on the roads. This véloroute (as it is called) has just had large sections resurfaced and the whole route is easily navigable. As it is an old railway line, there are no steep gradients so can easily be tackled by all family members. Further information can be obtained from the following link http://www.laval-tourisme.com/files/ot-laval/files/voies-vertes-mayenne-2009.pdf

Lassay-les-Chateaux

Lassay-les-Chateaux is a beautiful town about 11km from the gites and has just about one of the best preserved medieval chateaux in the whole of France. The town prides itself on being one of France's "Cités de Caractère" and has a delightful rose garden. A great place to enjoy an impromtu picnic or you can sample one of the bars or restaurants in the town centre.

Le Mans

About an hour and a half away, a great day out especially if it is around the Le Mans 24 hours. For 2015 this will be on 13th and 14th June. Outside of the racing season the motor museum at the circuit is well worth a visit and afterwards you can visit the Cathedral of St. Julien, the old city and enjoy a coffee in one of the squares near the cathedral.

Mont St. Michel

About an hour and a half away due west, Mont St. Michel is one of France’s greatest tourist attractions. Visit the abbey, dedicated to the Archangel, St. Michael and the various museums. Advisable to set off early as it is host to around 3 million visitors per year. As the name would suggest, it is a mount and is not pushchair or wheelchair friendly.

The Normandy Landings - Débarquement de Normandie

A great day out is a visit to the Normandy Landing Beaches. If you want to make a day of it, you can start with a visit to Pegasus Bridge. Then travel west along the coast taking in Sword, Juno and finally Gold beaches. This will take you to Arromanches, site of the famous Mulberry B Harbour. There are museums at both Pegasus Bridge and Arromanches which are well worth a visit. Finally, travel down to nearby Bayeux and visit the Bayeux Commonwealth War Graves Commission Cemetery which should be a fitting finale to your day out.

We needed a relaxing, chilled week in July and that is exactly what La Chouette offers. The gite is nicer than even the pictures suggest. The property is perfect for a couple and was very clean and comfortable. The kitchen has all the gadgets that you need if you want to cook for yourself.

A guest book is full of useful reviews of many restaurants nearby and George will book ahead for you. We ate at lunchtime in several truly French restaurants along with the local workers and enjoyed a variety of delicious meals all served with warmth and a great deal of tolerance as I murdered their language.

George and Yvette create a relaxed, warm environment which belies the very hard work that happens in the background. The large, secure garden is perfect for young children as it's primarily laid to lawn, is large enough for running around and has a volley ball net and a small (fenced) pool for messing around in on a hot day. Yvette's tubs and baskets of beautiful, multicoloured flowers and fruit trees finish off the setting perfectly.

We would definitely recommend La Chouette and fully intend to return ourselves.

Owner response

Many thanks for the review. Can't tell you how gratifying it is to receive comments like this and it does make all our efforts feel really appreciated. Great to have you both here and we do hope to see you again sometime.

10 / 10 Pauline & Tom Davis, Leicestershire 5th May 2015 12 August, 2015

Following a leisurely drive from Caen we arrived at George and Yvette's lovely home in the country. Our gite "Chouette" (owl) was very cosy with everything we needed, even the fridge had some immediate essentials included.

We were greeted with lovely warm kindness by Yvette and Hugo (George was out at the local ironmongers).

The house, gites and gardens are a credit to them both and an inspiration to Pauline on our return home to be as organised as Yvette in planting out our tubs and containers, dead heading and watering everyday.

The surrounding areas are beautiful and well worth investigating either in the car, by foot or bike. Bagnoles-de-Lorne for lovely restaurants, Lassay-les-Chateaux for a picturesque castle. We enjoyed every day discovering super sites.

The Normandy beaches on the way home are well worth a visit, as too is Pegasus Bridge for historical information.

Thank you George and Yvette (and Hugo) for a lovely week and for being such perfect hosts, you seemed to have the answer to everything.

Well done!!

Owner response

Thank you George and Yvette for such a wonderful stay and for making our baby's first holiday one to remember. From the last minute booking, to sorting the vet appointment for Remi and the lovely chats and everything else in between! We chose to spend most of our time relaxing at the Gite, enjoying the sun and having a dunk in the pool. We did have a wonder around the local town of Bagnoles de l'Orne which is a very. Thanks again George and Yvette, hope to see you next year!

Owner response

Thank you for the comments and really pleased you enjoyed your stay here. We do hope that you come again as it would be great to see your son growing up - they grow up so quickly from being babies. Of course I would love to see Remi again too as she is a lovely dog. Best wishes to you all.
