About the Owner, Mr Stephen David Fawcett

Jean and I bought Le Petit Ruisseau (The Little Brook) in March 2016 having fallen in love with it at first view. Moving to France has been our dream for years having spent many years visiting on holiday and having retired we are now living our French rural dream. Part of this dream has been to introduce others to the lovely countryside of Normandy and we are delighted to be able to do this by offering our gite for rent.

Year property purchased 2016
Why this location? Our gite is ideally located in the quiet friendly hamlet of Le Pont de Caen which is only a short walk from the historic medieval market town of Domfront with its boulangeries, bars, restaurants and supermarkets. The hamlet is peaceful but not isolated with designated cycle and walking routes nearby. Nature lovers will enjoy the huge range of birds and wildlife to be seen in the garden and surrounding area, including woodpeckers, red kites, red squirrel and occasionally an owl, as well as the more usual garden varieties.

The Owner Recommends

Domfront Castle and Medieval City

In the 11th century Domfront was the scene of much action and fighting, since it occupied an important point on the border between Brittany and Normandy. Hence Domfront castle, originally built at the beginning of the 11th century, was much fortified during the decades that followed. Much of the castle was destroyed as a result of the Wars of Religion but you can visit the ruins of the castle and stroll through the gardens which have lovely views of the surrounding countryside and the river Varenne. The town itself was also fortified, and many of the towers survive, along with sections of the ramparts, which now provide a good backdrop for the numerous medieval houses and buildings to be seen in Domfront.

Within the fortifications is the old town, an attractive region with narrow cobbled streets lined with half-timbered houses and some grander townhouses, interspersed with pleasant cafes and open squares.

Fosse Arthur

Stunning river and lakeside walk, through the woods, along a peaceful lane, with great views over the Domfrontaise countryside.

Lassay les Chateaux

Lovely castle which can be visited throughout the year

Bagnoles de l’Orne

Belle Epoch spa town with casino, chateau, thermal baths and numerous marked footpaths along the gorge. Also has an outdoor pool complex. There is also a hippodrome with racing meetings throughout the year.

Flers

Good for shopping and has Aquatic centre, bowling alley, cinema and numerous restaurants.

Leisure lake at La Ferte Mace

Leisure lake with beach, play area and cafe. Activities include water sports, mini golf, pedalos, cycle hire and walking routes.

Restaurant Le Pont de Caen

Friendly family run restaurant serving local cider and Normandy cuisine with a lunch menu costing 13Euro. This restaurant is opposite our gite.

Bistro St Julienne

Great little bistro located in Domfront's medieval town centre. Open evenings and weekends.

Andaines Forest

Great for rambling, cycling, picnics and bird watching

Local markets

There are weekly markets at Flers, La Ferte Mace, Vire and St Hilaire de Harcouet. Highly recommended if you want to experience real French life.

We have two young girls aged 5 and 2 and Le Petit Ruisseau was the perfect setting for our summer holiday. We spent many a sunny evening enjoying a BBQ in the beautiful garden, which is very spacious and safe for the girls to play in. The kitchen was very well equipped and we were pleasantly surprised with the lovely welcome gift which was left for us on arrival, perfect after a long journey.
The Gete is tastefully decorated to a very high standard, the bedrooms were lovely. The girls enjoyed sleeping in the bunk beds and we were very comfortable in the master bedroom, the bed was lovely and cosy. The showers are incredible! Everything was very clean and there was a real care in how the house was presented.
In the lounge is a cupboard with lots of games, suitable for all ages. Our girls particularly loved playing Pop Up Pirate. I managed to while away a rainy afternoon doing a puzzle, which was incredibly relaxing. The kitchen has a very comfortable sofa, which you can lounge in and day dream while looking out of the window. It is wonderfully peaceful.
Domfront is a beautiful town, there is a fantastic boulangerie, which we went to most mornings to collect pastries for our breakfast. There is also a large supermarket for all your supplies.
We used the Gete as a base to explore Normandy and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay there. We would recommend Le Petit Ruisseau to anyone.

We had a wonderful week at Le Petit Ruisseau and Steve and Jean were perfect hosts.

The house is very well equipped and Steve had thought ahead to our bringing small children and installed stairgates - which was much appreciated. The welcome basket was also a very lovely touch. The beds were all mega comfy (my 5 year old is now complaining about both the mattress and the duvet at home - that they are not as good as on holiday!).

Our children loved the garden (the lawn, the swings, the pool) and as we were lucky to have good weather we also enjoyed eating outside on the large patio table. The area around Domfront was interesting to explore as was the old town and castle. We particularly enjoyed the biscuit factory tour.

I would definitely recommend this property to friends/family, and would love to return myself!

Thank you Steve and Jean!

We absolutely loved our stay at Le Petit Ruisseau. The accommodation is absolutely stunning and renovated to an extremely high standard. There is nothing missing from the accommodation in terms of equipment, utensils, bedding, we found everything we needed. We were really comfortable, the bedrooms were beautiful and very spacious making the stay relaxing, and the motorised shutters were fantastic and meant that we could all have a very restful stay, sometimes only waking at 10am!! The garden and pool/play area was perfect for the children, we played family games on the huge lawn and the BBQ and Chiminea facilities were excellent and it meant we could sit out until late at night. We borrowed the bikes which were in great working order and it meant the whole family could go on bike rides. Excellent area for biking too! The area was very pretty with beautiful buildings and the town of Domfront was very interesting and a visit around the ruins was lovely with beautiful views. The town has a few restaurants and a couple of friendly bars if you fancy a change from the barbecuing. Steve and Jean were the perfect hosts! They were there to advise on local amenities and things to do. Jean brought extra pool toys to the children which was lovely. They called Jean "lovely Jeanie". Also when we arrived, there was a very welcome "welcome basket" which contained bread, milk, local cider, wine, butter, and Jean's homemade jam which was just what we needed on a late arrival at the cottage. TY

We absolutely loved our stay at le Petit Ruisseau! We rented the whole house, it is large and very comfortable. There is a huge kitchen downstairs, fully equipped, and a very cosy lounge with board games and dvds. Upstairs there are two bedrooms, each with a bathroom and very comfortable beds. The yard is lovely, and we could play badminton and pool there. The area is beautiful, with medieval towns around and lovely nature for walking and biking.
Steve and Jeanne were very gracious hosts, always available but never intruding. We enjoyed our stay very much and we highly recommend!
