About the Owner/Advertiser, Mr Stephen David Fawcett

Jean and I bought Le Petit Ruisseau (The Little Brook) in March 2016 having fallen in love with it at first view. Moving to France has been our dream for years having spent many years visiting on holiday and having retired we are now living our French rural dream. Part of this dream has been to introduce others to the lovely countryside of Normandy and we are delighted to be able to do this by offering our gite for rent.

Year property purchased 2016

Nature lovers will enjoy the huge range of birds and wildlife to be seen in the garden and surrounding area, including woodpeckers, red kites, red squirrel and occasionally an owl, as well as the more usual garden varieties.

The Owner Recommends

Domfront Castle and Medieval City

In the 11th century Domfront was the scene of much action and fighting, since it occupied an important point on the border between Brittany and Normandy. Hence Domfront castle, originally built at the beginning of the 11th century, was much fortified during the decades that followed. Much of the castle was destroyed as a result of the Wars of Religion but you can visit the ruins of the castle and stroll through the gardens which have lovely views of the surrounding countryside and the river Varenne. The town itself was also fortified, and many of the towers survive, along with sections of the ramparts, which now provide a good backdrop for the numerous medieval houses and buildings to be seen in Domfront.

Within the fortifications is the old town, an attractive region with narrow cobbled streets lined with half-timbered houses and some grander townhouses, interspersed with pleasant cafes and open squares.

Fosse Arthur

Stunning river and lakeside walk, through the woods, along a peaceful lane, with great views over the Domfrontaise countryside.

Lassay les Chateaux

Lovely castle which can be visited throughout the year

Bagnoles de l’Orne

Belle Epoch spa town with casino, chateau, thermal baths and numerous marked footpaths along the gorge. Also has an outdoor pool complex. There is also a hippodrome with racing meetings throughout the year.

Flers

Good for shopping and has Aquatic centre, bowling alley, cinema and numerous restaurants.

Leisure lake at La Ferte Mace

Leisure lake with beach, play area and cafe. Activities include water sports, mini golf, pedalos, cycle hire and walking routes.

Restaurant Le Pont de Caen

Friendly family run restaurant serving local cider and Normandy cuisine with a lunch menu costing 13Euro. This restaurant is opposite our gite.

Bistro St Julienne

Great little bistro located in Domfront's medieval town centre. Open evenings and weekends.

Andaines Forest

Great for rambling, cycling, picnics and bird watching

Local markets

There are weekly markets at Flers, La Ferte Mace, Vire and St Hilaire de Harcouet. Highly recommended if you want to experience real French life.

This holiday home is very well run, clean and tidy with every mod-con you could possibly want.

Lovely garden, walks to the river via the rope swing, and lots of available games.

The couple Jean and Stephen who own this property are really helpful and welcoming, nothing was to much trouble, we had a really nice welcome pack on arrival and some home made jam.

The bedrooms are comfortable, spacious and well equipped.

The kitchen is perfect in every way, great cooker, sofa, large table and all utilities you could wish for.

The living room has a nice sofa, comfy chairs and a decent TV, with Sky, DVD, it is also worth mentioning that the WiFi is also a very good standard.

Perfectly located to visit all the Normandy attractions.

Would we go here again? Yes absolutely, would we recommend it to others? Again yes, if your looking for a base to explore with a family or a nice place to relaxe this place is the perfect all rounder.

For us what made our week here extra nice was Jean and Stephen’s friendly and naturally help attitude, even with twins on their plot , often running into their home, they were easy going and lovely with our children.

In summary, perfect location, perfect to explore, lovely accommodation, very family and child friendly and the home made jam is to die for. Highly recommended by Andy, Mandy, Mabel and Layla.

Le Petit Ruisseau is an absolute treasure of a gite. It is pristinely clean, comfortable and tastefully decorated and very well equipped. Stephen and Jean are so attentive and are ready to give you a hand atvthe drop of a hat. We arrived to a lovely welcome basket of local cider and apple juice, biscuits and Jean's delicious homemade jam (we ended up fighting over the last scraps on our last day). They were so welcoming of our little girls and made it very clear that we didnt have to keep them quiet, and to just let them enjoy their holiday. The area is really lovely and there is loads to do.

We had a great meandre around the castle at Domfront, enjoyed the pear ciser museum, parc animalier d'ecouvres and Normandie Luge. From visiting the area previously zoo de champrepus is also most definitelt worth a visit.

I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this gite to others - in fact, I already have. Thank you Stephen and Jean xx
