About this property

Gite 2 is a Beautiful Gite in a Medieval Village. This cottage/gite is in a village setting.

We purchased the farmhouse in 2006 and slowly, lovingly and sympathetically to tradition, restored it over the years. The old barn has been converted into 2 gites, which are now available for rental. What initially attracted us to the area was a love of the outdoors, as we are keen walkers. The flora and fauna is amazing and views to die for. It was love at first sight.

Early retirement from the teaching profession has enabled us to divide our time between France and England.

The gite is located in a beautifully restored old farmhouse set in the medieval rural village of Roche-en-Regnier at 900 metres. There are wonderful views of the Ardeche mountains and the St Jacques de Compostelle walking trail passes directly in front of the house. Walk from the front door into beautiful unspoilt countryside. Wildlife abounds. Peace and tranquillity and a sense of bygone days.

Your holiday gite has stunning views over the surrounding undulating countryside - the perfect setting for your restful break from the hurly-burly of modern life. Ten mins to Vorey-sur-Arzon for good restaurants, shops, swimming pools, canoe hire. Ideal place for exploring the area. Activities include fishing, hiking, canoeing, mountain biking, hang-gliding, riding, swimming, winter skiing (downhill and cross country), husky dog trips from the village, snow shoeing. Visit the historic town of Le-Puy-en-Velay, see the source of the River Loire at Mont Gerbier and the internationally acclaimed town of Chaise Dieu renowned for it's classical music concerts. You can visit the lava flow of La Coulee de Lave close to the unique forgotten village of Chateau de Chalencon. The region offers so much for tourists, both in winter and summer.

The new centrally heated gite is contained within a modernised old barn. Comprising a living room with tv/dvd player, free wifi, sofabed and coffee-table. The integral kitchen is fully equipped and has an electric hob and oven, fridge-freezer and dining area with table and chairs. The bedroom has a double bed, wardrobe and chest of drawers. The bathroom has a handbasin, wc and shower. A washing machine and drying facilities are available free of charge. All bed linen, towels are provided And changed twice per week.Guests have full use of the covered summer terrace with lounge, dining table and barbecue facilities along with use of a sunny terrace with tables, umbrellas and sunloungers etc.. ample safe parking.
Our road ends just after the house so this is a very peaceful and relaxing spot with very little traffic, yet within easy reach of shops and entertainment. As the property is situated on the St Jacques de Compostelle walking route, there are walkers who pass by, or other visitors to the medieval village.

The gite offers a peaceful holiday with outstanding outdoor pursuits on the doorstep. If you love the countryside and the outdoors this is the place for you.

The Owner Recommends

Canoeing Down the River Loire

Half day or full day canoe trips on the River Loire from either Retournac or Vorey sur Arzon. Contact Ecole de Pagale du Velay. Also in the area the beautiful Allier Gorges offer magnificent opportunities for canoeing and rafting.

Churches

There are many interesting churches and chapels in the area, many dating back to the 11th century. The church at St Bonnet le Chateau has famous mummies. There are Cathedrals both in Chaise Dieu and Le Puy, as well as lovely local churches such as Chamalieres, Chalencon and St George's Lagricol and of course not forgetting our pretty little church in Roche.

Cycling/Mountain Biking

There is excellent cycling in the area for all abilities, including many way marked cycle trails through forests. Bikes can be hired locally in Vorey.

Festivals

The area has many local festivals, which transform small and sleepy villages. In the Summer each village seems to have it's own festival. The local town of Craponne has an international festival of country music in late July and Chaise Dieu hosts annual international classical music concerts. Le Puy en Velay is transformed in September with the Fete Le Roi des Oiseaux with people in medieval costume and plenty of street animation.

Fishing

There is a local trout lake at Villedieu, which is well stocked, permits available in the village. There are endless possibilities for river fishing on the rivers Loire, Ance, Arzon and Allier.

Flora and Fauna

In spring and early summer the meadows are awash with wild flowers, there is everything from cowslips to orchids.Birds are varied, we see a lot of kites, Falcons and buzzards as well as a variety of smaller birds. We feed the birds in the garden and we get an array of birds feeding such as marshtits, wagtails, house sparrows etc. In late Summer and Autumn the local forests are full of edible mushrooms. Great fun trying to find them but check them with the locals after.

Historic Castles

There are so many historic castles to visit such as Le Chateau de Polignac, Le Chateau de Rochebaron, Chateau de Lavoute sur Loire,La Tour de Roche en Regnier, Le Chateau de Chalencon just to mention a few.

Markets

There are many weekly markets of varying size and you could go to a different one each day. However we love the following: Vorey on a Sunday morning, Yssingeaux Thursday, the largest in the area and our favourite Craponne on a Saturday. A little further afield is the Friday market in Le Bonnet en Chateau. There are also smaller evening markets in Vorey and Chomelix selling local products , sometimes with performances of Auvergne music and dance.

Medieval Villages

Explore the medieval village of Chalencon. We call it the lost village as it seems lost in time, situated high above the Ance river. Spot the carved statues, visit the old church and then walk down to the old bridge Le Pont de Diable.

Other Local Activities

Visit the Goat Farm in St Maurice de Roche and sample the local cheese. Husky Dog trekking in St Maurice de Roche See the Eagles at the Chateau de Rochebaron Visit the old flour mills, beautifully restored, Les Moulins de Blanhac. Sailing, rowing and pedals at the Lac de Lavalette. Via Ferrata near to Le Pertuis 2 circuits possible.

Restaurants

There are many excellent restaurants to suit all pockets from Bistro style to fine dining. We recommend the following: L'Air du Temps in Confolens for fine dining, but they offer an excellent value lunchtime menu. Auberge du Lou Pinatou situated in the village of Solignac. Excellent value for money, using local produce. Le Kitch'N in Monistrol sur Loire next to a lovely church- Bistro wine bar offering lovely seasonal home cooked food. La Vieille Ferme in Beauzac good for hearty food at lunchtime, always full of locals.

Rock Climbing

Rock climbing is possible on the Rocher du Costaros, near to the village of Chamalieres

Site seeing

Wonderful site seeing in the area Visit the historic city of Le Puy with its famous monuments and Cathedral. Le-Puy-en-Velay, you'll be rewarded by your steep climb to Chapelle St-Michel d'Aiguille - perched on an outcrop of lava, high above the town. La Chaise-Dieu - worth a visit for its gargantuan Romanesque/Gothic abbey church complete with tapestries and ivory Christ. Drive the scenic Gorges de l'Allier, follow the majestic route of the Allier river from Langeac. Stop off at beautiful perched villages such as la chapelle de Rochegarde and Chateaugues.

Skiing

Enjoy downhill at Mt Mezenc, as well as pistes for cross country and snow shoeing. Cross country is also available at Yssingeaux. Further downhill skiing is also possible at Super Besse or Super Lioran and Chalmazel ski area.

Swimming

there are open air swimming pools both in Vorey and Retournac, both have a selection of pools and chutes etc. There is also natural swimming in lakes and rivers nearby. Our favourites include Chaise Dieu, lac d'Issarles and the Plan d'eau in Ambert

Tourist Train Excursions

There are several tourist trains, some open topped, that run along very scenic routes in the area. For a day out we often go to Ambert for a swim and picnic lunch and then we take the scenic train to Chaise Dieu. Other possibilities include Dunieres to St Agreve and Ambert to Olliergues. The Velo/rail are also popular, these are self propelled bicycle carriages that run on disused railway lines through the forest.

Visit the Source of the River Loire

Drive through wonderful mountain country into the Ardeche to see the source of the River Loire at Mont Gerbier. Climb to the top of the mountain for stunning views of Ardeche and Auvergne.

Walking

So many varied walks of different lengths straight from the house. Auvergne is a walkers paradise. We are keen walkers and have walked extensively over the years. We can advise on walks and we have a library of walking guides, maps, books on local history, flora and fauna for you to borrow.

This property is clean, tidy and very well equipped, both inside and in the communal shared area outside, where you can enjoy the stunning views whilst eating your meals. The property is fantastically situated for walking with well signposted walks starting from the village and the selection of local tourist information books provided mean that you are easily able to explore the area on foot or by car. This is a beautiful area of France and whether you want towns, cities, mountains, lakes or fishing, they are all within easy access. We found Andrew and Sue very welcoming and perfect hosts, always happy to give suggestions of places to visit .The provision of clean bedding and towels was a real bonus. We loved our stay and have already booked for 2015.

This is an brilliant base if you are looking for excellent value for money in a spectacular setting. The gite was attractive, clean, comfortable and contained all required amenities. Andrew and Sue couldn't have been more welcoming or helpful. The gite is located in a typical, picturesque, historic Auvergne hamlet with incredible views over the surrounding countryside especially from the patio and the former hay loft now turned into a spacious sitting/dining room. Lovely walks can be taken from the village which is set in some of the most magnificent countryside France has to offer. While the village of Roche is remote and has few facilities (apart from a travelling baker!) the region has numerous gorgeous villages and fascinating historical towns. Roche is a wonderful centre from which to explore this part of the Auvergne and we plan to return as we only scratched the surface of what it has to offer during our fortnight stay in June.

Beautiful place in the mountains lovely people who owned the accommodation weather wasn't that good being in the mountains lots of low cloud ..Gite 2 was very nice clean beautiful views only down side was it was right next door to gite 1 and very dark in the lounge both gites served one outside door so felt you could hear next door cooking and talking so not private and had to share outside for eating and that was the only space to use..... very cut off but a beautiful place...

Owner response

Thanks for your positive comments. Our Gites are suited for French rural life,& main amenities are a short drive away. Both Gites are fully sound proofed, you will only hear noise from Gite 1 if both Gite doors are open at the same time. There are 2 large outdoor eating areas for guests, a lower garden terrace with 3 separate tables, & the hayloft which has 2 tables as well as a large lounge area. Sadly this year saw the worst summer in France since 1936, usually August is hot & sunny.
