|Why this location?||We love living in the unspoilt Charente region with its quiet peaceful roads, rolling hills and farmland . Especially the wide choice of restaurants in the region of France - something for everyone.... The summers are long and hot, the winters can be mild... the coast is not too far for a day trip and the towns of Limoges and Angouleme are within an easy drive + the beautiful city of Bordeaux is an easy day trip. We love visiting Futuroscope as we have a passion for anything cinematic or to do with the moving image. Angouleme welcomes visitors from around the world to its attractions - notably the Comic Strip Museum & its associated International 4 day event in January, the ever popular Circuit des Remparts Classic Car Road Race in September and the Gastronomades Food Festival in November. Steeped in history the region boasts Medieval Churches, Historic Chateaux, WWII monuments as well as an excellent range of vineyards and sports activities - something for all the family to enjoy.|
|Unique benefits of property||La Betoulle offers the prefect location to Escape, Relax and unwind with the largest outdoor pool in the region, tennis court on site (coaching available) and acres of land to explore. Properties are spacious and offer privacy without isolation. We pride ourselves on our attention to detail and our many reviews reflect that. We have a passion for food - both cooking and eating, and love to discover new flavours and ideas , which we hope we are able to transmit into our diverse breakfast menu. We make our own bread (when time allows) and Penny loves to bake afternoon 'treats' for her guests at weekends. Breakfast is included in the price for B&B guests, but our self-catering guests are welcome to join in @ the buffet breakfast for a supplementary charge. We offer a restaurant reservation an menu translation service a are happy to book any outside activities for our guests. Most of all we love to give our guests a relaxing holiday a see how they unwind during the course of a stay with us.|
One of the most beautiful chateaux in France - over 1000 years of history. Visit the Renaissance galleries, grand staircase (designed by Leonardo da Vinci), old kitchens and the underground Roche of Foucauld. The libraries, map room and archive are open every afternoon for guided tours. Dressing-up box for the children during the summer months. New gallery opened in 2007. Very popular during the season, especially as Chez Steph is opposite.
Only open for a couple of years but now one of the most popular venues in the Charente - unbeatable setting opposite the Chateau de-La-Rochefoucauld, the best steak you will ever eat in France and as one of our guests commmented 'garlic potatoes to die for', also the best pizza for miles around, salads, tartines and superb creme brulee - incredibly popular....always a queue during the season.
The Angouleme Rampart Race - classic vintage racing car road race and rally weekend - 3rd weekend in September - 50% of the drivers and cars are English - one of the biggest Bugatti and Frazer-Nash events in the world. Very popular with classic car clubs from around the world - a wonderful finale to the season.......
Allow at least a day to enjoy the experience of this high-tech theme park dedicated to the moving image. 3D cinema, several IMAX screens, hair-raising rides. New for 2008 - The Castle of Giddiness and the World of Dinosaurs. Something different to experience every time you visit.
Charente Limousin has an excellent range of gourmet restaurants notably La Grange-aux-Oies at Le Chateau-de-Nieuil a short 5 minute drive away. In the summer, dine on the terrace opposite the Chateau, in the winter sit in the beautifully designed 'Grange' in front of a roaring log fire. Wonderful food - the menu changes every 3 months - many Charentaise dishes, beautifully prepared and served. A dessert trolley to die for - have as many as you want and local wines all for an all inclusive price of 46 Euros/head. Occasional 'Special Unique Menus'. An unforgettable experience.
Another restaurant in nearby Nieuil - good local produce - 5 course menu du jour for 12 Euros/head including wine - excellent value.
For a real treat we highly recommend the set lunch in Luxe near Mansle @ 17 Euros/head for 5 courses including wine - amazing value for money - a unique fine dining experience. Very popular as only available Wed-Fri weekly and usually booked in the season for 3 weeks in advance.
Opened in Aug 2005 - a traditional French restaurant serving local produce in nice surroundings - popular with the locals in nearby St Laurent-de-Ceris. Has an outdoor seating area for the summer months - also a friendly bar and menu du jour at lunchtime. Vegetarian dishes now available.
To add to that day out in La Rochefoucauld, followed by wine-tasting at St Sornin take the children to the underground grottes at nearby Chazelles - beautiful underground caves discovered by a lady looking for her dog in 1892 - several chambers thousands of years old.
Due to change of ownership we now have a choice of 2 excellent restaurants with bars in the village - a short 15-20 minute walk away. Les Tilleuls offers a more unusual menu, Les Platanes is more traditional French. Both offer set lunch menus as well as more traditional cuisine in the evenings and change menu every 2 months.
1km from busy village - located on 90 acre private estate
Combined with a trip to Oradour this shop offers a cheerful end to the day - 3 floors of Porcelain, tours available, a huge range at very reasonable prices - they will pack in special strong boxes for safe transportation back to UK
1st weekend in September (same weekend as the Lille Braderie) over 900 stalls selling bric-a-brac, brocante, antiquities - good prices and lots of fun.
Two fantastic restaurants in a very pretty village - Le St-Jean offers gourmet cuisine with a twist and Auberge-de-L'Argentor offers more regional cuisine - wonderful fruits de mer and grills.
La Grange aux Oies and Chateau de Nieuil - gourmet dining. Les Tilleuls and Les Platanes in St Claud village - traditional and bars
Lest we forget - not exactly an enjoyable day out, but worth the trip to see the 'martyred village' of Oradour-sur-Glane in nearby Limousin - preserved in the same state since the 10th June 1944. An excellent Centre de-la-Memoire presents exhibitions retracing the events that led to the massacre.
Rouillac market on 27th of every month - one of the biggest markets in France - a good day out - lots of livestock in the mornings - anything from a llama to a peacock......good range of food stalls, local wine and Pineau producers, local cheeses, fruit and veg, Limoges porcelain - something for everyone.
So many sports activities in the area - horse riding can be arranged with British owned stables a short 5 minute drive away. Canoeing and kayaking on the Rivers Charente and Vienne - the centres at Condac and Exideuil are particularly recommended. Adventure Park and the Lacs de Haute Charente have something for everyone, also man-made beaches at Roumazieres, Massignac and Angouleme and miles of empty roads for cycling.
Just outside Poitiers - unique in France - over 350 primates all in a natural setting. Have direct contact with the monkeys as they swing through the trees above your head. Get there for feeding time. Our favourites are the lemur colony and the largest gorilla group in France.
Every year this proves more popular - especially with the adults - either an easy 2½ hour pedal or the harder 5 hour trip for which you will need at least 4 cyclists...start from Roumazieres, Manot or Confolens.
Just under an hour away on the border with the Dordogne, the pretty village of Piegut-Pluviers hosts a weekly market. Lots of local produce, cheese, foie gras, duck as well as local artisans and the cheapest porcelain shop in the region. One of the best markets in south west France - well worth the trip.
The wines of the Poitou-Charente region are rapidly gaining in popularity - wine tours and tastings at Ampelidae and Domain de Villemont near Poitiers to name a few of the Haut Poitou region plus St Sornin between La Rochefoucauld and Montbron, Maison des Maines near Angouleme and L'Angoumans. Two Pineau/Cognac producers worth a visit (generous tastings) are Roussille in Fleac and Guy Bonnaud at Gourville.
Enjoyed another relaxing visit to Manoir la Betoulle where the hosts Penny & John made our stay as good as ever despite unfortunately a poor week of weather. The tennis court just behind the gite is a great bonus & was well used along with the table tennis by the pool.
We also enjoyed the close proximity to probably the best restaurant in the area at the La Grange Aux Oies where we dined twice. The setting here is exceptional overlooking the Chateau & with a great menu gives a real taste of France.
Le Petit Bois gite is a lovely holiday home for a couple. It has good quality furnishings and equipment and has the most comfortable bed to guarantee a good restful holiday. The hosts Penny and John have thought of everything to make your holiday comfortable and are always willing to help with advise such as what events are going on during your stay, or will book a restaurant for you. It is a good location for exploring the area such as the many markets, the lakes, cognac distilleries, chateaux, or for just relaxing around the large pool.
Excellent stay, could not fault it. The property is set in the most wonderful grounds. The hosts Penny and John could not have been more helpful from a really nice welcome pack on arrival to constant help when enquiring about local attractions and restaurants. Le Petit Bois is ideal for couples wanting a relaxing retreat like we do. It is well maintained and well equipped. We most definitely be back again!
This was our fourth visit to La Betoulle, and as ever, we had a thoroughly successful stay. Penny and John's welcome and hospitality are always genial and warm, and they both work incredibly hard behind the scenes - it looks effortless though - to ensure we have everything we need. Nothing is too much trouble. The outstanding feature of La Betoulle as an environment is its peace, quiet and serenity. The setting is stunning, the gite we stay in small but charming and totally secluded with glorious views over the tree covered lawns. The pool is one of the best we have swum in, and never crowded or noisy - in fact it feels like our own personal pool! The other guests are always pleasant and appreciative of the essential peace and calm of the grounds overall. We feel at home, switched off and so much better the moment we arrive. And the benefits after two weeks of peace, books, (usually!) sun, water and good food mean we have booked again for next year.
