Some of our guests' reviews:
"We had the most wonderful stay at Labaurie and a most welcoming reception throughout our stay. I would highly recommend Labaurie for someone who is ready to unwind and relax in the tranquil setting of the estate."
"Chateau de Labaurie is so beautifully situated on the edge of Chalais in extensive grounds, which have been developed beautifully into a tranquil location. All of our very large family enjoyed the use of the pool and it was so nice to share it with other families who were on holiday there too, which kept everyone happy. The site is small enough to be peaceful, but large enough not to feel isolated - for us, a perfect combination! The chateau is also well located to visit the local markets and we particularly enjoyed a canoe ride along the river from Aubeterre and some nearby lake beaches. We can highly recommend the Chateau de Labaurie as a relaxed place to take your family away on holiday."
Recommended for: families with young children, families with teenagers.

We have just returned from 2 fabulous weeks staying at La Porterie of the Chateau de Labaurie. The hosts, Bev and Elaine, could not have been more welcoming and the Chateau surroundings were idyllic.
Our 4 boys (16,14,11,9) thoroughly enjoyed the freedom of cycling around the grounds, playing football and badminton and we all enjoyed daily pingpong tournaments in the barn, followed by a swim in the pool to cool off. The accommodation was spacious and comfortable - it would have been nice to have had our own washing machine but there was one we could use in the barn whenever we needed. Although equipped with a gas oven we cooked each evening on the outside bbq and loved sitting under the covered terrace enjoying eating al fresco. There was a dishwasher though which was great!
Calais itself, although not a 'pretty' town, has all the amenities you need close to hand including a Lidl & boulangerie at the bottom of the hill , an intermarche in the town as well as a very good weekly market. If you're looking for a more picture- postcard town, Aubeterre sur Dronne is only a short distance (a 15 minute picturesque drive through the countryside) with its many restaurants and shops as well as a great river for swimming and kayaking.
We have all returned home and agreed what a fabulous holiday it was. Thank you Bev and Elaine (& Roxy & Barney the dogs!) for making us feel so at home. We hope to be back some time in the future!

We loved our holiday, the gite was lovely, the area beautiful (although Chalais itself isn't the most picturesque town it is worth a wander around and the amenities are good). The welcome was really warm and we felt right at home straight away. The pool area was great and there is loads of space for energetic children to run around.. The gite was well appointed and comfortable, lots of room for us and very well equipped.

This was a really lovely holiday that fully met our expectations. Property was beautiful and well maintained. Children loved their mezzanine bedroom. The property was clean, well maintained and well stocked. Having 2 showers was very useful. Setting was beautiful, grounds well maintained and pool area was great. Owners Elaine and Bev were great, very helpful, friendly and nothing was too much trouble. Gave us loads of information etc. We went as a large family group and rented other cottages and had exclusive use of area which worked very well. I would particularly recommend it for family groups or friends. There's plenty of space to spend time together especially round pool and outside cottages but you still have your own space. Children loved the space to play in and ride bikes etc. If you want to travel around you need a car. Village is about 20/25 minutes walk away although there is a Lidl closer. I would recommend this property to anyone. Ideal if you want a relaxing holiday in rural France enjoying food and drinks etc.

Owner response

We are allways a little apprehensive when big families book more than one or two of our cottages, never knowing what to expect from them, but we were delighted with this group of really nice people and children and felt very much at ease during their stay as they were great.
Thank you Pauline and family for this lovely review and hope you all may return again someday in the future for another Holiday.
Elaine and Bev
