Angouleme, the capital city of Poitou Charente, lies 45km south. Angouleme old town is based around the chapel and has some interesting medieval houses (some rather grand) along the pedestrianised cobbled streets. Within the town there are 2 main features - the cathedral and the town hall. The Roman style Cathedral of Saint Peter dates back 900 years, but has been altered a great deal since. It is the ornately decorated facade that holds the most interest, with 70 carvings depicting the story of the Ascension. The town hall was built on the site of an earlier chateau, of which just 2 towers now remain. There are also several museums in the town, including a museum of fine arts, a museum of paper (the prosperity of the town was originally founded on the production of paper) and an archaeology museum.

This was a village totally destroyed by the Nazis in the Second World War, 642 men, woman and children massacred by a German Panzer Division. Walking around the centre is a unique and humbling experience. In 1999 the Oradour memorial centre was opened by the French President Jacques Chirac and the French minister of culture Catherine Trautmann. The village has been left exactly as it was on the day of the massacre down to a rusting car in the street. Distance 81km
A beautiful, peace full village set in the Charente countryside is set between two tributaries of the River Charente, the Osme and the Couture.. The murals in the village church have been listed as historic monuments and are a must to see. The ephemeral gardens(just across the road) are original works created by artists using plants to illustrate themes that are changed every year. The river Osme forms tiny islands used to grow traditional crops such as hemp, linen and peat. It is these crops which have given the village its history, economy and identity. Hedges, mazes and wickerwork tepees are available to children in the natural play area. The village is also home to the 'Musee de l'Ecole Publique en Charente' in the original school building from the days of purple ink, black overalls and clogs! There is a permanent exhibition of a classroom circa 1900 fully equipped with documents, text books, wall charts and period clothing. The museum is open Monday- Friday from 2-5pm. Just a few minutes walk from the property is an amphitheatre, tennis court and football 'stadium' where St Fraigne FC play their matches.
A typical Charentais village developed in early medieval times built around the abbey that once stood there. The village includes many houses from the renaissance period. The medieval gardens there are created by local enthusiasts.
One of Europe’s largest animal parks set in the forest of Chize. Vegetation appropriate to the habitat of the animals has been planted to give them as close to a natural environment as possible. Located at Villiers-en-Bois near Chize. More than 600 animals can be seen, including otters, vultures, wolves, cicadas, tree frogs and wildcats. You can explore the forest on foot or in a horse drawn carriage. There is also a mini farm and an adventure playground for children.
See an amazing array of monkeys and gorillas
A fantastic holiday home. Owners very friendly and most helpful. The property was very clean very well equiped. Excellent swimming pool, hot tub and plenty of great cycle bikes. Views are amazing huge garden to walk around freely. Games room something for everyone. Very relaxing enviroment. Plenty of near by supermarkets and larger towns for site seeing and great shops. We had a perfect holiday and hope to return again. I really do not have a negative point to mention.
Thank you for your kind comments. We are so pleased that you enjoyed your stay and hope you return (especially Buster) who keeps looking for you.
Well appointed, spacious gite, beautiful large garden, outside eating area, heated swimming pool, trampoline, village location.
Some areas of the gite need updating. Whilst perfectly functional the bathroom and separate toilets were in need of a makeover. The television was also dated and no good for watching DVDs.
The faulty TV and DVD player have been replaced.
Lovely surroundings and wonderful pool!
Too far from the sea for a day trip.
This is down to personal choice.
Many of our guests have visited the coast especially La Rochelle. Travel time is normally just under 2hrs.
Nice quite location - ideal for families. We found that it was easy to fly our children ( now in their 20's ) in to La Rochelle/Poitiers from Stanstead so we could have the car ( essential ) and carry their luggage to save charges. Lots of places to visit - nice area.
none for us.
