Angouleme, the capital city of Poitou Charente, lies 45km south. Angouleme old town is based around the chapel and has some interesting medieval houses (some rather grand) along the pedestrianised cobbled streets. Within the town there are 2 main features - the cathedral and the town hall. The Roman style Cathedral of Saint Peter dates back 900 years, but has been altered a great deal since. It is the ornately decorated facade that holds the most interest, with 70 carvings depicting the story of the Ascension. The town hall was built on the site of an earlier chateau, of which just 2 towers now remain. There are also several museums in the town, including a museum of fine arts, a museum of paper (the prosperity of the town was originally founded on the production of paper) and an archaeology museum.

Try the Remy Martin Cognac tour. Founded in 1724, Remy Martin derives its name from 2 families, who shared the same vision and determination to produce the exceptional quality Cognac we know today. Learn how Cognac is made on a tour that includes a ride on the Fine Champagne Train through the facility, a miniature vineyard, several cellars and finishing up with a tasting.

A theme park situated in Poitiers in the Poitou-Charente - Western France. It is one of France's most visited attractions.

Les Antilles de Jonzac

A vast leisure complex, which includes a swimming lagoon with slides, cascades, geysers and wave-pool. There are artificial indoor and outdoor beaches, tropical gardens, a fitness suite, beauty salon, restaurant and more. The complex is open 7 days a week, in particular the roof slides open in the summer months to let the sun shine in. Next door to Les Antilles is a casino which hosts various spectacular shows and boasts a superb restaurant. Jonzac itself has many attractions, ample bars, restaurants, shops a medieval chateau and an outdoor leisure park with a man-made beach, boating lake, aerial runways, a climbing wall and lots of other activities for young and old alike. You can also visit the thermal spas for beauty treatments and total rejuvenation.

The market town of Aigre is 8km and is held every Thursday. Oradour sur Glane

This was a village totally destroyed by the Nazis in the Second World War, 642 men, woman and children massacred by a German Panzer Division. Walking around the centre is a unique and humbling experience. In 1999 the Oradour memorial centre was opened by the French President Jacques Chirac and the French minister of culture Catherine Trautmann. The village has been left exactly as it was on the day of the massacre down to a rusting car in the street. Distance 81km

Saint Fraigne

A beautiful, peace full village set in the Charente countryside is set between two tributaries of the River Charente, the Osme and the Couture.. The murals in the village church have been listed as historic monuments and are a must to see. The ephemeral gardens(just across the road) are original works created by artists using plants to illustrate themes that are changed every year. The river Osme forms tiny islands used to grow traditional crops such as hemp, linen and peat. It is these crops which have given the village its history, economy and identity. Hedges, mazes and wickerwork tepees are available to children in the natural play area. The village is also home to the 'Musee de l'Ecole Publique en Charente' in the original school building from the days of purple ink, black overalls and clogs! There is a permanent exhibition of a classroom circa 1900 fully equipped with documents, text books, wall charts and period clothing. The museum is open Monday- Friday from 2-5pm. Just a few minutes walk from the property is an amphitheatre, tennis court and football 'stadium' where St Fraigne FC play their matches.

A typical Charentais village developed in early medieval times built around the abbey that once stood there. The village includes many houses from the renaissance period. The medieval gardens there are created by local enthusiasts.

A very enjoyable week at Le Petit Bijou. The very friendly owners were always eager to assist or deal with any minor problems or advice on local attractions. Clean and extremely well equipped including a games barn if the weather was dull and a huge garden which the grandchildren enjoyed hugely. We canoed on the Charente, visited beautiful old towns, markets and even tried the velos bike track . The nearest supermarket is 10 mins away and sells all you may require. The roads in August were mostly empty - a very pleasant change from England !

All was all good except perhaps an up-grade on the double beds would make it that bit more comfortable.

I would recommend the gite to friends and family.

The property was ideal for our party size. It was clean and comfortable and had everything we needed as a family. The garden and pool were superb and we spent most of our stay outside enjoying the sunshine. The hosts were extremely friendly and welcoming and provided excellent customer service. Nothing was too much trouble. There are some lovely places to visit nearby. We enjoyed a couple of the nearby towns and lakes. There is a supermarket nearby which is handy. We would most certainly recommend this property to a friend.

Owner response

Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed your stay, hope you had a smooth journey back and the lads made the party.

Gorgeous setting for this lovely gate with a very large garden and pool enjoyed by all three generations of our family. Jason and Alison were very welcoming and friendly.. It is the perfect place for a relaxing holiday and we need to visit again to fully explore the area. The give gave us everything we needed plus equipment for a toddler (cot, stairgate and highchair were used). Our 17 month old granddaughter loved being able to feed the chickens and the fish and, as dog lovers, we all enjoyed the company of Buster and Poppy. The garden has plenty of space and play equipment to be enjoyed as does the pool. The only thing we didn't do justice to was the well equipped games barn - the weather was far too good to need it, although two members of the family did use the bikes. There are plenty of picturesque towns and villages to visit both near and further afield plus two lakes with beaches. Another bonus of the holiday was the very friendly village with it's lovely boulangerie, providing fantastic bread and croissant, and friendly cava for wine and cognac purchases.

Owner response

Thank you for taking the time to write this review. It was lovely to meet you all and we are so pleased you enjoyed your stay at Petit Bijou. We look forward to seeing some (or all) of you again in the future!

Des vacances fantastiques!
We had a lovely holiday at Petit Bijou. The accommodation was spacious, clean and had everything you could possible need including a great BBQ. The pool was brilliant and the games barn kept the children entertained throughout our stay. Alison and Jason were both warm and welcoming and couldn’t have worked any harder to make our stay enjoyable; nothing was too much trouble for them. Poppy and Buster (the dogs) were friendly, great fun to be around and adopted us as part of their family.

Owner response
