Within the town there are 2 main features - the cathedral and the town hall. The Roman style Cathedral of Saint Peter dates back 900 years, but has been altered a great deal since. It is the ornately decorated facade that holds the most interest, with 70 carvings depicting the story of the Ascension. The town hall was built on the site of an earlier chateau, of which just 2 towers now remain. There are also several museums in the town, including a museum of fine arts, a museum of paper (the prosperity of the town was originally founded on the production of paper) and an archaeology museum.

This was a village totally destroyed by the Nazis in the Second World War, 642 men, woman and children massacred by a German Panzer Division. Walking around the centre is a unique and humbling experience. In 1999 the Oradour memorial centre was opened by the French President Jacques Chirac and the French minister of culture Catherine Trautmann. The village has been left exactly as it was on the day of the massacre down to a rusting car in the street. Distance 81km
A beautiful, peace full village set in the Charente countryside is set between two tributaries of the River Charente, the Osme and the Couture.. The murals in the village church have been listed as historic monuments and are a must to see. The ephemeral gardens(just across the road) are original works created by artists using plants to illustrate themes that are changed every year. The river Osme forms tiny islands used to grow traditional crops such as hemp, linen and peat. It is these crops which have given the village its history, economy and identity. Hedges, mazes and wickerwork tepees are available to children in the natural play area. The village is also home to the 'Musee de l'Ecole Publique en Charente' in the original school building from the days of purple ink, black overalls and clogs! There is a permanent exhibition of a classroom circa 1900 fully equipped with documents, text books, wall charts and period clothing. The museum is open Monday- Friday from 2-5pm. Just a few minutes walk from the property is an amphitheatre, tennis court and football 'stadium' where St Fraigne FC play their matches.
A typical Charentais village developed in early medieval times built around the abbey that once stood there. The village includes many houses from the renaissance period. The medieval gardens there are created by local enthusiasts.

The property was ideal for our party size. It was clean and comfortable and had everything we needed as a family. The garden and pool were superb and we spent most of our stay outside enjoying the sunshine. The hosts were extremely friendly and welcoming and provided excellent customer service. Nothing was too much trouble. There are some lovely places to visit nearby. We enjoyed a couple of the nearby towns and lakes. There is a supermarket nearby which is handy. We would most certainly recommend this property to a friend.
Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed your stay, hope you had a smooth journey back and the lads made the party.
Gorgeous setting for this lovely gate with a very large garden and pool enjoyed by all three generations of our family. Jason and Alison were very welcoming and friendly.. It is the perfect place for a relaxing holiday and we need to visit again to fully explore the area. The give gave us everything we needed plus equipment for a toddler (cot, stairgate and highchair were used). Our 17 month old granddaughter loved being able to feed the chickens and the fish and, as dog lovers, we all enjoyed the company of Buster and Poppy. The garden has plenty of space and play equipment to be enjoyed as does the pool. The only thing we didn't do justice to was the well equipped games barn - the weather was far too good to need it, although two members of the family did use the bikes. There are plenty of picturesque towns and villages to visit both near and further afield plus two lakes with beaches. Another bonus of the holiday was the very friendly village with it's lovely boulangerie, providing fantastic bread and croissant, and friendly cava for wine and cognac purchases.
Thank you for taking the time to write this review. It was lovely to meet you all and we are so pleased you enjoyed your stay at Petit Bijou. We look forward to seeing some (or all) of you again in the future!
Des vacances fantastiques!
We had a lovely holiday at Petit Bijou. The accommodation was spacious, clean and had everything you could possible need including a great BBQ. The pool was brilliant and the games barn kept the children entertained throughout our stay. Alison and Jason were both warm and welcoming and couldn’t have worked any harder to make our stay enjoyable; nothing was too much trouble for them. Poppy and Buster (the dogs) were friendly, great fun to be around and adopted us as part of their family.
Thank you , we really enjoyed your company. i hope the car was ok for your return trip. We had to replace the chickens, thanks for your help and advice. poppy and buster say a big hello to all.
Whilst the house was clean in general, there were some issues. To be fair to Jason and Alison they are only in their first season, the bathroom does need a refurb (which I believe is planned) as it is a little dated. The kitchen is functional, although watch your head on the extractor fan hood.
The pool is a good size and clean, it made a refreshing change to have toys/equipment to play with. The hot tub was also clean and easy to use. The games room does need more light and just a bit of a clean to remove dust etc.
There is lots to do in the area, local shops are very good. What the description does not mention is that there are two dogs which belong to the owner, and that these have free access to the gardens during the late afternoon. Sometimes unsupervised, but whilst one does appear tame, I would suggest that you watch your step in the garden(!) If you are allergic to dogs you will need to make this clear before booking. If you leave the door to the garden open, the dog(s) is quite happy to walk into the house.
Overall though the house is a good place to stay, when I asked for another mattress it was provided. We did buy a grill for the barbeque because the one there was covered in rust, and we left the kettle which we bought, because of the state of the one provided.
I am perhaps picking at straws though, the owners have done a great job to provide a gite. There is still work to do, but I would recommend this.
Thank you for your comments. We are sorry you didn't really enjoy your stay- maybe the weather was a factor! If you had read the Information Folder you would have seen we ask guests to let us know if you re not happy with anything- we cant put things right if you don't tell us.
