The “Hobogîte” sleeps 2 adults in an old 1 bedroom stone cottage. Set in an acre of gardens, the gîte comes with exclusive use of both the garden and the 30 sq.m swimming pool (open from May to September). The holiday home has a spacious open-plan living and dining area downstairs and a bright and airy double bedroom and bathroom upstairs.
While our lovely Charentais barn was being renovated, we often camped out in an old stone outhouse - our daughter affectionately christened this the Hobo House, and the name has stuck. It was so nice in this friendly little cottage that we decided to convert it, and rent it out as a gîte - but only when there’s no-one in the barn. This is how you will have the whole acre of gardens - and the pool - entirely to yourselves.
This is a true get-away-from-it-all escape; if you see 3 cars a day passing on the small road at the end of the drive, you should feel honoured! You are however just 5km away from the N10 motorway, and 6km from the local town of Ruffec and the Charente River - for swimming, canoeing, fine dining, or simply sitting and enjoying it all.
As you will see from the pictures, we have carried out the conversion sympathetically, to a very high standard, providing everything we think is important; a local oak dining table, a dishwasher, Denby bone china, sharp knives, two types of corkscrew, a huge flat-screen tv with 5.1 cinema surround sound, lots of good dvd's, a large firm and especially comfortable bed, a multi-jet “shower pod” like something out of Star Trek... and outside, a vast north-facing shady hangar with a large ceiling fan for those hot summer lunches, a choice of 2 barbecues and of course outdoor ping-pong, all sheltered from both sun and rain.
Free wi-fi is provided throughout, even down by the pool. So you can do a little casual surfing as you relax under a parasol on the comfortable pillows of the hardwood sunloungers, with an iced drink from the poolside fridge and bar, or in a deckchair under the small plantation of mature pine trees which provide a pretty spot to relax with a book in pine-scented shade. Not forgetting a cooling shower in the huge "walk-around" shower in the wet-room of the pool house, converted from what is probably the finest stone-built chicken coop west of the Charente!
After your lunch in the cool of the shaded hangar, another swim, and a 6km cycle-ride or drive into Ruffec, to the twice weekly market or the spanking new branch of E.Leclerc, for vital supplies, you’ll be ready for an extremely leisurely al fresco apéritif and barbecue. Remember, here in the wonderful summer micro-climate of the Charente, it stays warm until 2am...
And so to bed ... in that very comfortable bed ... in the old stone “hobogîte” ...
The kitchen has all the things which are important for a great holiday - gas hob, electric oven, dishwasher, washing machine, large fridge with freezer over, microwave, Denby bone china, champagne stopper, two types of corkscrew, and good sharp knives!
The Living/dining room has a heavy French oak dining table with 4 oak chairs, double sofa, large flat-screen tv with 5.1 cinema surround sound, just for watching dvds and listening to your music - plug the cable provided into your iPod earphone socket.
A bright and airy bedroom with a double bed, and a comfortable arm chair by one of the double-aspect windows. Two of the walls show off the lovely pinkish Charentais stone which forms the structure of the Hobogite, giving the room a restful ambiance.
1) The main bathroom by the bedroom has a multi-jet "shower pod", basin and wc.
2) The old stone-built outhouse by the pool has been converted to a changing room, with a large wet room containing a "walk-around" shower, basin and wc.
Attractive and cosy logburner with a good supply of logs, which warms the whole house in no time. There is also a portable gas fire to give a boost of heat when you need it. The bathroom has a thermostatically controlled heater.
Large flat-screen tv for viewing dvds with 5.1 cinema surround-sound. Free wi-fi is provided throughout, even down by the pool. Outdoor table tennis, undercover if required under the large north-facing hangar (a two-storey lean-to).
You have sole use of the pool (from May to September) and the whole acre of attractive gardens. There are spacious gravel terraces overlooking the garden, and a large north facing (i.e. cool!) hangar - this is a 2-storey lean-to which is a great place for al fresco lunches and evening barbecues - remember that the warmest time of day is about 5pm, and it stays warm outside until 2am in the summer.
Plenty of off-road parking.
Two adults, regrettably it is not suitable for either children or pets.
Rob & Lene, decided to buy a holiday home in the Charente as we entered our 5th decade 10 years ago. |Why this location?||We wanted to go for our holidays somewhere far enough south to get proper hot summer weather, but not so far that it was more than an easy day's drive. The Hobogite is just 400 miles from Calais, on motorways which have very little traffic - even in the summer, as they don't head either towards or away from Paris.
This is a quiet rural location where you can really lose yourself, far away from the usual hurly-burly. The Charente has a wonderful micro-climate which provides lots of sun, and very few overcast or cloudy days; it apparently has the most sunshine of any area in France away from the Mediterranean.
|Unique benefits of property||Our rural retreat is on the edge of a tiny hamlet; if we see 3 cars a day passing the road at the end of our drive, we feel honoured! We are however just 5km away from the N10 motorway, and our local town of Ruffec.
We are proud to say that we have our very own 'USP' (Unique Selling Point) - we only rent out the gite when we are not using our converted barn, so you have sole use of the pool and of course of the whole acre of gardens, laid mostly to lawn and gravel terraces, with a small plantation of mature pine trees providing welcome summer shade.
Flows within 5km, through Ruffec, Condac, Verteuil, etc - many restaurants and cafes are of course in close proximity to this beautiful river.
A lovely base for a holiday in France. Beautiful suroundings. Very quiet and peaceful setting. Everything you need is in the Hobogite. British channels on the TV and good choice of DVD's to watch. An extensive welcome pack is also provided.
Lovely cafes and restaurants are to be found by the river, in the locality where you can anjoy an ice cream in the afternoon or an evening meal.
Thank you for leaving such a lovely review. It was great to hear that you had such a relaxing stay at The Hobogîte, and that you obviously got to know the local area so well. We hope that we may look forward to welcoming you back again in the future.
We have just returned from a very relaxing week spent at Hobo gite, it is a lovely gite for a couple in a very tranquil setting.
The gite lived up to all our expectations and had everything you could possibly need or want. The welcome pack and larder store are a very welcome extra that is not always provided in a lot of gites. The gite was spotless on arrival and the outside areas are very well maintained.
We would highly recommend booking this gite and hope to return again ourselves in the near future.
We would highly recommend a visit to Verteuil sur Charante a beautiful village 15 minutes drive away with a lovely Chateau and old watermill and great riverside restaurant for coffee and cakes across the road from the old mill.
Thank you so much for leaving us such a positive review. We were very happy to hear that you enjoyed such a relaxing stay at The Hobogîte, and that you plan to return. We look forward very much to welcoming you there again.
