Delightful detached cottage in a rural setting with undisturbed views across open fields. It has been renovated leaving the old beams intact and using eco materials, like breathing plaster and paint but at the same time bringing it into the 21st century with modern appliances like dishwasher, microwave and washing machine.
My philosophy in decorating and getting the cottage ready for holiday guests is that it has to be near perfect.
Having holidayed in France for many years I was very often disappointed at the standard of the gites and cottages we stayed in. Having to buy your own washing up liquid or toilet paper on holiday is a nuisance and spoils the feeling of actually being on holiday. Like having to bring your own bed linen and towels. They take up an awful lot of space in suitcases and car.
Therefore all those things are provided, even washing powder and kitchen paper etc. We don't want people to go home with spares of anything unless they are happy memories!
The cottage is set in a separate part of a large mature garden and very private. Swimming pool heated to 28C with easy and secure access and large decking area for loungers. Landscaping is well on its way and looking good.
Tranquil and peaceful surroundings will make you relax and enjoy your well deserved holiday.
We feel however that we need to let you know that we have 2 dogs. They are very friendly and love having people making a fuss off them. Don't worry they hate water so won't go swimming! We have also made severals gates so you can be without dogs should you prefer that!
Fully-equipped kitchen with ceramic induction hob, extractor, Miele dishwasher, state of the art combination-microwave, and since 2017 the choice between a Senseo coffee-machine or a bean-to-cup machine. You can either bring your own beans or buy them from us or in all the shops.

I am of Dutch origin. Moved to the UK in 2000 and married my husband Tony in 2004.<br/>After Tony retired we decided to move to France and started looking for properties. We stuck with the Charente because it is a very easy trip from the UK and excellent road and rail connections to Paris where my sister lives. The weather is similar but with more sun and higher temperatures. We love the soft yellow/beige stone they used to build their houses.
|Year property purchased||2012|
|Why this location?||Most of it I already explained earlier but while looking at houses this one really caught our eye. After the first viewing we were sold. We have been very lucky. We have the best location in our little hamlet and the best neighbours we could have wished for. All of our close neighbours are French and very helpful and friendly. We buy most of our meat from our local farmer with everything else she is willing to supply.
We also feel that our property has something to offer for everybody. A heated pool, great possibilities for walks or bicycle rides/tours, enough culture at close hand, including a famous Roman excavation site, Cassinomagus and the coast at 1,5 hours drive. If wine is your thing, Bordeaux is just over an hour away and Cognac 45 minutes.
|Unique benefits of property||Even though we live on site our guests can have complete privacy if they wish. No people overlooking the property. A free view across the fields. Although we hope our guests always have great weather the odd shower might happen and the gite is big enough not to get crowded. There is quite a big garden for kids to enjoy themselves.
You have a private access to the property so can live independent from the main house.
We lived in the gite for three months during the works on our house so we have equipped it to our own standards and we hope that shows.

For the gourmets among us there are several gems around, Guide Michelin provided.
But there are a few goods places nearby which won't break the bank and provide goods home cooked food for both adults and children.
Please ask if you are looking in a particular area, we have several recommendations.
There is a lot of information provided in the gite.
Check out this web site if you fancy taking up sailing, fishing, mountain biking, swimming etc. www.lacs-de-haute-charente.com/en/
There are lots of walking routes in and surround this area for which we have provided several very detailed maps. However for the serious walkers there is the GR4 which comes through this area. For more information have a look at www.gr-infos.com
Another brilliant website which gives you a lot of information on our area.
Official site for the Tourism board of the Charente. And don't forget we are only 1,2 hours away from Bordeaux and therefor the Atlantic Coast, so absolutely perfect for a day at the seaside!
After 3 years we returned to L'Escargot and another great relaxing break in the heart of rural France. The kids again loved the pool and this time we probably spent more time in and around the Gite, not travelling quite as far afield for day trips as we did the last time we were here. Tony and Trude were as welcoming as ever and their hospitality as we remembered from before. Dougie (again) and Lauren also welcomed us into the fold! Another wonderful week in a lovely location!
We had an amazing two week stay at L'Escargot. The Gite was wonderfully presented in an idyllic location. Trude and Tony were the perfect hosts and nothing was too much trouble. It really was home from home. Our girls will miss the company of Dougie and Lauren, all of whom became great friends. We were very sad to leave and look forward to returning next year. What a little treasure this place and it's hosts are.
Thanks Claire, it was great meeting you and your family and we are looking forward to seeing you again next year!
L'Escargot is a lovely place to stay, quiet rural location but with restaurants and villages/towns a short drive away.
We hired bikes for our stay through the website Francebikehire.com and the gently rolling countryside around the gite was great for relaxed cycling.
Tony & Trude are perfect hosts and the gite, pool and garden are well maintained and clean.
We have been before, have never been disappointed, and would very definitely recommend a stay here.
Thank you Belinda and Richard for your raving review! Looking forward to seeing you again.
The owners were very welcoming and were really helpful throughout.
The property was lovely and the presentation, facilities, and condition was excellent.
Information provided by the owners was very useful.
We particularly enjoyed the recommended restaurants, local walks, and canoeing on the Charante - and our little dog loved it.
We would certainly recommend this property - it is quite lovely.
