The houses are very comfortable and well equipped, offering all the privacy and tranquillity one could hope for as well as stunning views of the Charente countryside. They have a huge play area with space for badminton, cricket, football etc. As well as swings and a sandpit for the younger guests, and a large tramoline. Les Chauvins is on the Charente Dordogne border in south west France. There are so many fun activities for families to share in the Charente that the question is never what to do, but where to start!
Explore the rivers in a flat-bottomed boat or a canoe or try walking, riding and mountain biking round the rolling countryside.
Aubeterre sur Dronne is a must with its underground church and river beach. So is Brantome, with its cafes and bars and bustling Friday market. Chalais and Riberac too!
Classroom history lessons come to life at the imposing forts and chateaux. Climb to the top of a castle, dress up in medieval costume, or enjoy one of the many medieval village fetes around the region.
And if all that's not enough, surprise the kids with a trip to an adventure park, a scenic excursion on a llama, or further afield, a self-propelled ride on a vélo-rails or rail bike along a disused railway track!
The lush, green landscape of Charentes is one of the best places to enjoy a nature holiday in France. With no mountains or rugged terrain to contend with, the countryside is easily accessible to everyone, offering an unrivalled mix of rolling hills, vineyards and valleys, not to mention the glorious beaches of the French Atlantic Coast. Get close to nature birdwatching, or looking out for the coypus, wild boar, deer and bats. The gently undulating countryside is an open invitation to walkers and cyclists with a network of well-marked paths, whilst fishermen can relax beside a river.
Welcome to Les Chauvins. We are Madeleine & Marcus Britton. We were living and working in Yorkshire before coming to France, on our travels we fell in love with this property and the beautiful rolling Charente countryside, so much so we decided to move here!

|Why this location?||The Charente has its own micro-climate, it is warmer and less rainy that then surrounding areas. The countryside is beautiful, in the summer the fields are full of sun flowers, wheat and maize and the skies are breath-taking, so many stars. The Milky Way passes right above the courtyard, it's a photographers dream.|
|Unique benefits of property||Les Chauvins is a wonderful place to enjoy peace and tranquillity, in the company of friends and family. The houses are full of character, yet modern, stylishly decorated with everything you may need on hand. There is plenty to do here, with the games room, the bikes, the table tennis, the trampoline, the playing-field and of course the pool there is no need to leave the grounds.....except that in the surrounding area there are so many wonderful things to see. Visit Aubeterre, Brantome, Riberac Market, do a wine tour, go canoeing, Go Ape.... the list is endless. Come and see for yourself, it's wonderful.|
Aubeterre sur Dronne is approximately 22 km from Les Chauvins and has been officially listed as one of "The Most Beautiful Villages in France" since 1993. There are plenty of things to do there. At the foot of the village, where the meadows meet the River Dronne, there is a river beach for swimming and sunbathing, it also has cool, shady areas for picnicking or if you prefer there is an outdoor bar/restaurant. Nearby there is a canoeing centre, the football club, and the village’s very active tennis club. In the village there are also small boutiques for present shopping, a variety of bars and restaurants, a puppet theatre and The Underground Church of Saint Jean is definitely worth a visit. There is a small artisan market on Sunday mornings. For a full list of activities and restaurants visit their website.
The ancient, mystical and sacred town of Brantome (42km) has fascinated visitors for centuries, and although a little farther than other places, don't discount it. Nestled in a cluster of limestone caves high on the Aquitaine plateau, Brantome’s natural beauty, bubbling spring, and well-stocked river attracted its earliest inhabitants over 40,000 years ago. It is one of our favourite places in the Dordogne and Friday, the bustling market day, is possibly the best day to visit, combine a little shopping with a canoeing adventure on the river and a look at the artisans blowing glass! Have a picnic under the trees at the riverside park, or lunch at one of the numerous cafes. In Brantome there is a home for retired British police horses! Well worth a trip to see. Have a look at their website and book a visit. Close to Brantome is the Grotte de Villars, with underground chambers, stalagmites and stalactites, a must for all you budding geologists.
Riberac visit it's (23km) famous market on Friday mornings, it is easily the biggest and best locally for food, presents etc. There, you will find many English people, shopping and selling! There are plenty of bars, coffee shops and restaurants to choose from, one of which is Le Commensal (05 53 90 46 28). It also has a Chinese restaurant La Pagoda, Thai restaurant Le Petit Thai 05 53 90 12 71 and a fish restaurant Le Citronnier. Head west on the D20 to Aubeterre sur Dronne. It is only 15kms from Riberac so there’s plenty of time for a dip in the river before returning home!
