La Maison aux Volets Verts is a semi detached cottage situated in a hamlet that is easily reached by an excellent road network, but is set back from the main road and accessed by crossing a bridge over the river that separates the Charente region from the Dordogne.
The cottage benefits from being in the beautiful Charente region but right on the border of the Dordogne National Park. The views from the cottage take in the wooded and rolling countryside of both regions. There is a lovely small Romanesque church that chimes the hour from 8 in the morning until 7pm which is marked by the Angelus.
La Maison aux Volets Verts was built in the 16th century and in its history has been a ‘house of fine standing’ in the commune and also has a huge bread oven which was in use as the bakery to the local area until just before the second World War.
At dusk local starlings perform their murmurations, they form sweeping shapes around the hamlet before roosting for the night, it is a joy to watch, especially with a chilled glass of the local pineau in hand.
The hamlet is served by bread deliveries from local boulangers at least four times a week. For grocery shopping the large town of Villebois-Lavalette is a ten minute drive away, it has a large supermarket, medieval covered market square and a busy Saturday market, all overlooked by a medieval chateau. Closer are two smaller towns with bakeries, a small supermarket and plenty of bars and restaurants.
When you stay here you can enjoy walking around the beautiful wooded countryside that surrounds the hamlet, bicycle ride to the nearest small town for a five course ‘plat de jour’, or take a picnic down to the river and have a paddle. The garden is perfect for relaxing and soaking up the sun while gazing at the lovely scenery. If the weather is too hot there is a pretty shady deck where you can cool down.
When you feel ready to explore a little further the cottage is well located to reach places of interest; to the north are the lakes of the Poitou-Charente region, Bordeaux is 1½ hour’s drive, the beautiful town of Brantome is 20 minutes away, Aubeterre-sur-Dronne is 40 minutes away with its sandy beaches, swimming and watersports, closer there is a large heated open air swimming pool 10 minutes away. Grotte de Villars - Fantastic caves in a beautiful woodland setting, with a guided tour, Stalagmites and Stalactites and 17,000 year old cave paintings around 40km.

We love being in France, in our cottage; it is so relaxing. We both work very hard and while it had been a long held dream of mine to have a place in France, in 2014 it became possible, David didn’t take much persuading. This picture is taken after the vendor accepted our offer. We made an offer through the agent, who couldn’t get hold of the vendor. We got the good news over lunch and we raced back to have another look at our new home, we have loved the cottage and the area ever since.

|Why this location?||I had done a lot of research into the best weather locations. The Poitou-Charentes has a micro climate giving the region lots of sunny days second only to the South of France. It is also within a days driving distance from our UK home. We looked in the Charente Maritime. As soon as we drove around this area the scenery changed from the flat of the Charente Maritime to lush undulating hills. The views were better and we just fell in love with it. We love to walk and there are so many tracks through woods, passed lakes and in open countryside that we just knew it as the place for us. It is well located and easily accessed from three airports.|
|Unique benefits of property||It is a relaxing place to be; you can sit in the garden and have a chilled glass of something and never tire of the view. The cottage is 500 years old and has its quirks, but also has everything you need for modern living. And in the winter it is just romantic to sit in front of a raging log burner enjoying each other's company.|
The Atlantic coast is around 1.5 hours by car. River beaches around 40 minutes at Aubeterre-sur-Dronne and in under 40 minutes in the other direction Le Plan d'Eau de Saint-Yrieix offers a sandy lakeside beach with swimming, sailing and tennis.
A lovey traditional french house in a rural setting. Based in a small hamlet, it is ideal for those quiet weeks away staring at the scenery. Lovely garden and kitchen with all the mod cons that one could need. Spacious bedrooms and two excellent bathrooms. Very clean house and tastefully decorated. Rental rates were fair for the property. Close to lots of amenities and a 10 minute drive away from a very well stocked supermarket. An ideal setting for exploring the local areas. The vineyards of Bordeaux are an hour away and a great day out, The owners were very friendly and helpful, promptly replying to enquiries. Would definitely stay again.
