About this property

Stunning Barn Conversion with Private Pool. This cottage/gite is in a rural setting.

We look forward to welcoming you to 'Chez Les Hirondelles',  our privately owned gite/holiday home in the Southern Charente. Our  beautifully converted detached barn offers 5 spacious bedrooms, two of which are en suite and situated in what must be one of the most stunning locations in the Charente with far reaching views over the countryside from every room and the stunning open sided covered patio. There are beautiful walks from the doorstep, a large garden leading off into the countryside, plenty of parking and private pool. The pool has a French regulation alarm system and is fenced so safe for young children.

We are situated in the south east Charente region of France very close to the border of the Dordogne and are surrounded by rolling hills and woodland, maize and sunflower fields but only 2km from the pretty town of Montmoreau St Cybard.  The town has all  amenities including butchers, bakers, bank, post office, bar and a little restaurant and a large supermarket. The stunning town of Aubeterre sur Dronne is only 15 minutes away  with its unusual Romanesque monolithic underground church and voted one of the most beautiful villages in France. There is also a lovely golf course at Aubeterre with a great restaurant and bar with terrace and welcomes children, and a leisure activities facility and you can canoe downstream from Aubeterre to St Aulaye. It has a variety of great restaurants, a wonderful river with a sandy beach to swim in or you can sit with a chilled glass of wine or cold beer in the square watching the world go by.

The area has a wealth of charm and tranquility, from the South Charente with its echoes (but fewer tourists) of the next door Dordogne to the gently sloping vineyards of the wealthy Cognac producing West Charente.  Spend your time visiting the many wonderful local markets including Aubeterre, Brantome, Riberac, Chalais and Villebois Lavalette with its feudal chateau dominating the region from its hilltop. Villebois has a market every Saturday morning where you can enjoy a dish of fresh oysters with a bottle of Muscadet under the ancient, covered market square and  only 15 minutes away. The attractive hill town of Angouleme is 35 minutes away, best know for its stunning Romanesque cathedral, international comic festival and the Cirque de Ramparts motor racing held each year. Spend a day tasting the wonders of the great houses of Cognac, about an hour away, and learn about the history and production of this glorious amber nectar. The beautiful town of Brantome is just under an hour away where you can wander the cobbled streets, take a canoe around the island town or sit in the park with its huge trees and stunning plant life. These are but a few tasters of what our area has to offer, and if it all proves too much, take time out to relax by the pool with a good book and a chilled glass of wine taking in the breathtaking views around you, not to mention the utter peace and tranquility this gite offers.

Les Hirondelles is a large and beautifully renovated barn standing on a hillside, which includes all modern facilities, yet still retains the character features of huge oak beams and Charentais stone walls.  It has a spacious garden leading to the countryside with established fruit trees and has a fantastic open sided covered hangar as a patio, meaning you can sit out in the fresh air come rain or shine looking out far across the sunflower fields, woodlands and hills beyond. The 10 x 5 m pool is totally private to the property and surrounded by a decking patio with sun beds and again those views!

About the Owner, Mrs Lesley Dorman-Groves

We moved to France in 2004 after having left our busy professional lives in printing and engineering behind, and had a very successful gite and cattery business in the Haute Charente. We love to travel and this wonderful lifestyle offers the opportunity to do just that out of season. We love animals and have 5 cats all of which we acquired whilst in France and running the cattery. They are all very happy as are we in this wonderful little corner of the Charente!

Year property purchased 2014
Why this location? We are situated at the end of a track so no traffic noise and the gite has outstanding views over the countryside. There are a lot of attractions around us and also Cognac and St Emilion both within an hour. The town of Montmoreau is only a 2 minute drive with a supermarket, butchers, bakers and a bar and a restaurant. The stunning village of Aubeterre sur Dronne is only 15 minutes away with an abundance of little bars and restaurants and of course the underground church. We are in an ideal location for exploring the wonders our area has to offer.
Unique benefits of property This property is ideally situated for a peaceful and tranquil holiday, yet only a 2 minute drive to the small town of Montmoreau St Cybard. The views from the gite are outstanding across the stunning French countryside and our guests love the added bonus of the covered terrace. It is a very spacious gite comfortably sleeping 12 people with lots of outdoor space on the decking and the gardens beyond. The 10 x 5m pool is totally private to the gite and has attractive fencing and a pool alarm for the children. There is lots of private parking and some lovely walks from the property.
