About this property

Gite Plus Pool In Glorious Gardens with Lake. This cottage/gite is in a rural setting.

We came to stay here and loved it so much that we bought the whole place!

This elegant and comfortably furnished gite is set in the mature and beautiful gardens of an 18th century water mill. A river borders the garden and feeds the mill stream. Ornamental trees and shrubs provide shade around the lake and offer quiet places to read, paint, relax and fall asleep in.

The swimming pool is surrounded by aromatic plants and roses. Patio furniture and pool loungers are provided along with a barbeque. There are several eating areas under the trees so that you can make the most of the weather.

The garden is perfect for wildlife and we have now spotted 50 different bird species including kingfisher, golden oriel, cirl bunting and black woodpecker. Red squirrels are often seen too.

We are surrounded by quiet country lanes for safe cycling and sleepy country villages to explore. The busy, picturesque town of Verteuil-sur-Charente is only 3kms away. Here you will find a 12th century chateau which can be visited, an excellent restaurant, two wine bars, a bakery and an authentic mill producing its own flour and baked goods which is open for coffee and lunches in a perfect waterside setting.

Our sunsets are spectacular and the stars are incredible.

You're going to love it!

There are 2 gites here which may be hired together for larger family groups.

The garden is large and you will find plenty of private space to enjoy even if another family is on site.

Tax de sejour is payable locally

About the Owner/Advertiser, Mrs Sarah Thorne

We were brought here by 'Escape to the Continent' to look for a holiday home, but while staying here we fell in love with the property and were offered it by the owners. We sold our business in the UK and returned to live here full time with our labradors and enjoy the relaxed lifestyle, friendly bars and restaurants and the superb sunny weather. With a background in hospitality and a fabulous setting we are confident we can offer you a genuinely enjoyable escape.

Year property purchased 2015
Why this location? We are surrounded by fields of sunflowers and wheat, oak woods and country lanes. Our garden has a river at the bottom and our lake is home to kingfishers, herons and several fish. The nearest town has an imposing chateau, good restaurants and three lovely bars, one right on the river, perfect for summer evenings. There is often live music here during the summer.
The Charente is one of the sunniest areas of France and even in December we have been able to eat lunch outside.
We are close to local cycling networks and the area is perfect for wildlife watching, walkers and kayakers.
Unique benefits of property Everyone who comes here loves the outside space. A tranquil and beautiful garden, space to play and a pool surrounded by roses.
For wildlife lovers the garden is perfect. We have red squirrels scampering through the trees and many species of birds including spotted flycatchers, golden oriels, kingfishers and nesting ducks. There are large specimen trees and unusual scented shrubs to wander among.
We are close to markets, supermarkets and visitor attractions but tucked away at the end of a quiet country lane.
The area has lots to do if you can tear yourself away from the pool but nothing beats lying in the shade with a good book and a glass of chilled white wine, always at a good price here!

A beautiful location. Hosts very helpful and caring. A great place to chill out and relax.
The gite was beautifully presented. Set in beautiful grounds with a lovely swimming pool and lots of places for sitting and contemplating and watching nature. Lots of places for alfresco dining and lovely walks for our dog.
Interesting villages nearby and some good places to eat out.
I would highly recommend thIs place to anyone.

Bill and Sarah made me feel very welcome and they could not have done more to help me enjoy my week with them. Poursac is a rural and very quiet village which suited me perfectly, you have the local larger village with boulangerie, restaurant, shops and bars within a 3.5 Km bike/car ride which is so beautiful. The large town of Ruffec is just a 10/15 car ride away which has every thing you need, including at least two large supermarkets available.
I had the most relaxing week and enjoyed every minute of my stay. The Gite was very comfortable and I slept as well as I had for ages. I can not fault Bill and Sarah's hospitality at all and the days sat by the lovely pool either on the sunbed or beanbag will be remembered well into the future.

Owner response

It was an excellent stay once again. We were there 3 years before in summer and curious about nature in spring. It was so beautifull and peacefull. Very quiet, ideal when you like to read books and rest from dayly bussy life.
