About this property

Gite Plus Pool In Glorious Gardens with Lake. This cottage/gite is in a rural setting.

We came to stay here and loved it so much that we bought the whole place!
This elegant and comfortably furnished gite is set in the mature and beautiful gardens of an 18th century water mill. A river borders the garden and feeds the mill stream. Ornamental trees and shrubs provide shade around the lake and offer quiet places to read, paint, relax and fall asleep in.
The swimming pool is surrounded by aromatic plants and roses. Patio furniture and pool loungers are provided along with a barbeque. There are several eating areas under the trees so that you can make the most of the weather.
The garden is perfect for wildlife and we have now spotted 50 different bird species including kingfisher, golden oriel, cirl bunting and black woodpecker. Red squirrels are often seen too.
We are surrounded by quiet country lanes for safe cycling and sleepy country villages to explore. The picturesque town of Verteuil-sur-Charente with its 12th century chateau, good restaurants and wine bar is only 3km away.
Our sunsets are spectacular and the stars are incredible.
You're going to love it!
There are 2 gites here which may be hired together for larger family groups.

The garden is large and you will find plenty of private space to enjoy even if another family is on site.

Tax de sejour is payable locally at 0.40 cents per adult per night.

About the Owner/Advertiser, Mrs Sarah Thorne

We were brought here by Escape to the Continent to look for a holiday home, but while staying here we fell in love with the property and were offered it by the owners. We sold our business in the UK and returned to live here full time with our Labradors and enjoy the relaxed lifestyle, friendly bars and restaurants and the superb sunny weather. With a background in hospitality and a fabulous setting we are confident we can offer you a genuinely enjoyable escape.

Year property purchased 2015
Why this location? We are surrounded by fields of sunflowers and wheat, oak woods and country lanes. Our garden has a river at the bottom and our lake is home to kingfishers, herons and several fish. The nearest town has an imposing chateau, good restaurants and a lovely wine bar.
The Charente is one of the sunniest areas of France and even in December we have been able to eat lunch outside.
We are close to local cycling networks and the area is perfect for walkers and kayakers.
Unique benefits of property For wildlife lovers the garden is perfect. We have red squirrels scampering through the trees and many species of birds including spotted flycatchers, golden oriels, goshawks and hen harriers. There are large specimen trees and unusual scented shrubs to wander among.
We are close to markets, supermarkets and visitor attractions but tucked away at the end of a quiet country lane.
The area has lots to do if you can tear yourself away from the pool but nothing beats lying in the shade with a good book and a glass of chilled white wine (which is very cheap here)

10 / 10 Jane Guernsey 20 September, 2017

Myself and my husband and two daughters aged 11 and 15 enjoyed another wonderful holiday at Le Grand Moulin in August 2017. Sarah and Bill cannot do enough and are excellent hosts. We especially enjoyed the fresh eggs and the home grown tomatoes and home made raspberry jam. The Gite is 5*, very comfortable and clean and everything is catered for. The grounds and pool are impeccably kept and delightful. This is a little gem and we will definitely be back for a third visit.

My husband and I had a wonderful week in a beautiful part of France. The Gite was so comfortable with all the amenties to cook a healthy meal. The garden area was so tranquil and maintained to a high standard and the pool was clean and inviting. The villagers were very friendly as too our hosts.

The surrounding villages had places to eat and interesting sights to see. We shopped in the nearest supermarket that sold all the things we needed and more and the staff were very helpful and polite.

We will be staying there again and have already suggested to some of our friends to book there for a very relaxing and comfortable holiday.

Owner response
