About this property

Charming countryside Gite. This cottage/gite is in a rural setting.

Cosy gite set in beautiful landscaped gardens of 18th century water mill. We stayed here and fell in love with the property - so we bought it!
The gite is well equipped with comfortable furniture and set at the end of a quiet country lane. You can spend time relaxing by the swimming pool or watching wildlife by the lake and amongst the wild flowers.
There are extensive gardens to enjoy with secluded areas for reading, painting and dozing.
Cook outside on the barbecue and eat in the shade of the trees next to the millstream.
The pool is surrounded by aromatic plants and roses and is fully alarmed.
An idyllic setting for your well earned holiday. We look forward to welcoming you.
We are only 3kms from the historic village of Verteuil where you will find an excellent restaurant, two wine bars, one with live music, a 12th century chateau which is open to the public and an authentic water mill producing its own flour and baked goods. They serve coffee and brioche and lunches in a perfect waterside setting.
We have 2 gites which may be hired together for larger family groups.

The garden is extensive and you will find plenty of private space to enjoy even if another family is on site.

About the Owner/Advertiser, Mrs Sarah Thorne

We were brought here by 'Escape to the Continent' to look for a holiday home, but while staying here we fell in love with the property and were offered it by the owners. We sold our business in the UK and returned to live here full time with our labradors and enjoy the relaxed lifestyle, friendly bars and restaurants and the superb sunny weather. With a background in hospitality and a fabulous setting we are confident we can offer you a genuinely enjoyable escape.

Why this location? We are surrounded by fields of sunflowers and wheat, oak woods and country lanes. Our garden has a river at the bottom and our lake is home to kingfishers, herons and several fish. The nearest town has an imposing chateau, good restaurants and three lovely bars, one right on the river, perfect for summer evenings. There is often live music here during the summer.
The Charente is one of the sunniest areas of France and even in December we have been able to eat lunch outside.
We are close to local cycling networks and the area is perfect for wildlife watching, walkers and kayakers.
Unique benefits of property Everyone who comes here loves the outside space. A tranquil and beautiful garden, space to play and a pool surrounded by roses.
For wildlife lovers the garden is perfect. We have red squirrels scampering through the trees and many species of birds including spotted flycatchers, golden oriels, kingfishers and nesting ducks. There are large specimen trees and unusual scented shrubs to wander among.
We are close to markets, supermarkets and visitor attractions but tucked away at the end of a quiet country lane.
The area has lots to do if you can tear yourself away from the pool but nothing beats lying in the shade with a good book and a glass of chilled white wine, always at a good price here!

We have just come back from a week's stay at Le Grand Moulin and could not have had a more relaxing and enjoyable holiday. The gite was superb, clean, well presented and contained everything we needed. An outstanding feature was the extensive garden which had lots of separate areas, sunny and shady, where we could relax or eat al fresco. We particularly liked the bbq area and cooked and ate there a couple of times. We ate lunch at the little bistro table outside our gite under the shade of a tree watching the chickens roaming around the courtyard. Sarah and Bill were excellent hosts; friendly, helpful and kind. We loved the beautiful swimming pool, which was tirelessly maintained by Bill every day so that it was spotlessly clean and pleasant to swim in, and we spent a lot of time relaxing on the sun loungers between swims. The garden at night was an ideal place for stargazing as there is very little light pollution and we spent several evenings watching shooting stars and testing our knowledge of constellations! We had a wonderful holiday with an authentic rural France experience and would thoroughly recommend Le Grand Moulin as a perfect place to get away from the stresses of everyday life.

This wonderful gîte exceeded our expectations. The listing description was accurate, and the beautiful, extensive grounds were in full bloom when we arrived, with the lilly-filled lake particularly attractive. The gîte was clean, with a well-stocked kitchen and comfortable beds.

My partner and I stayed for three weeks in July, making good use of the fabulous pool. We ate all our meals in the garden, enjoying a few BBQs, and plenty of croissants and patisseries from the boulangerie in Verteuil, 3km away.

Our hosts Sarah and Bill were discreet, and very helpful and friendly, and we took advantage of their badminton and pétanque set. Having bikes available to use was a great touch, though it was too hot for cycling during our stay. My partner greatly enjoyed the yoga day Sarah hosted soon after we arrived.

The inquisitive chickens were a great source of entertainment, and a few fresh eggs were an unexpected bonus.

We enjoyed visiting Verteuil-sur-Charente, taking coffee and canelé at the Moulin de Verteuil, touring the château, and popping into the boucherie and other shops. Drifting down the Charante in a kayak was a highlight. The gîte was a great base for exploring the surrounding area, and we visited the impressive château at La Rochefoucauld, La Rochelle, the Roman ruins at Saintes, and the comic museum in Angoulême.

If you want a peaceful holiday, wonderful wildlife, and within reach of many attractions by car, then we would highly recommend this gîte.

Our 2 week stay at Le Grand Moulin, Poursac was fantastic. The accommodation and location were excellent. The gite was immaculate and had everything you could possibly need including BBC/ITV TV. The beds were so comfortable we always had a great nights sleep. The owner's Sarah and Bill were very accommodating, approachable and knowledgeable and made us feel at home as soon as we arrived. The setting was so relaxing with its beautiful, spacious grounds and many shaded areas. There is a lake and a small river within them and a stream to boot. Not to mention the well kept swimming pool. It was idyllic sitting out in the morning under the shade of a beautiful Albizzia tree enjoying a breakfast of croissants/pain aux raisin/chocolat - the best I'd tasted from the local boulangerie in Verteuil-sur-Charente about 3km away. You never tire of fetching the croissants because it gives you the opportunity of seeing the beautiful chateau on the banks of the Charente each day. It was enjoyable taking a stroll around the gardens watching out for the abundant wildlife in and around the garden - kingfishers, red squirrels, frogs, dragonflies, butterflies etc., reading a good book sitting by the lake or having a glass or two of wine. This place is such a stress buster! Ideal for groups of walkers, cyclists, artists, writers or just simply for families who enjoy peace and tranquility. We recommend canoeing on the Charente river. We have highly recommended this gite to our friends and family.

We absolutely loved our holiday at Le Grand Moulin and can't wait to go back.
Myself and my two children rented the smaller of the two properties. Our friends rented the larger of the two houses. Everything in the property was clean, the bedrooms and shower room were great sizes. The kitchen was well stocked with equipment.

The best thing though, has got to be the beautiful outdoor space available. The gardens and pool were just stunning and allowed us to relax and have fun together every day. The owners Bill and Sarah were delightful and did everything they could to make our stay enjoyable. The kids loved using the bikes around the garden.

We enjoyed visiting local attractions and towns aswell as going a bit further afield to La Rochelle one day.

Owner response

Thank you Hannah, we are so glad you enjoyed your time here and we look forward to seeing you all again, Sarah
