We are a family of 4 (2 daughters aged 21 and 16) and we stayed at Le Sorbier at the end of July/beginning of August. The gite is cosy, clean, the beds are very comfortable with lovely finishing touches throughout. The pool is delightful. The view from the gite is stunning and it is ideally located for walking and cycling. Paul and Amanda are fantastic hosts and although they have only moved permanently to France recently they are very knowledgeable of the area. We visited a number of villages including La Rochefoucauld (and its chateau), Nontron, Piegut Pluviers (the local market is amazing) and spent a (wet!) day in Cognac (we toured the distillery of Baron Otard which includes a look at the castle home of French King, Francois). The local supermarket is 5 mins away in Montbron, which is another pretty village. We hope to return again for another visit and would definitely recommend the gite to others.
The property looks and sounds good in the advert, but that description does not do Le Sorbier justice. Everything you could want is in the gite and the owners are available if you need them. Otherwise the tranquility and scenary are all yours to enjoy without interruption. The views across the valley from the house and its patio are excellent. The mature woodlands all around provide a wealth of wildlife. We spotted black redstarts, spotted flycatchers and a hoopoe without any effort at all. Bring your walking shoes and there is a different walk from the house to explore every day. Sharing the pool with the other gite was fine. We came to a very English understanding about who would use it when without a word being spoken on the subject. The gardens for the two gites and the owners' house are all very private.
The ground floor is spacious and well equipped, the two bedrooms are rustic and tastefully furnished and there is a large bathroom with shower. The ground floor washroom with toilet would be very useful for a family.
We will certainly be back to explore more of the nearby towns and villages.
