After spending many years travelling all over France, my husband & I found our own piece of paradise in the tiny hamlet of Servolles & relocated from the UK permanently in March 2015. We are fortunate to have wonderful French neighbours & our son, who goes to the local primary school has quickly integrated, we enjoy being part of our local community. Drawing on our own experience of what we wanted from a gite, we firmly believe that visitors will love Les Petites Cerises as much as we do.

Although we are able to enjoy the peace and tranquillity of the glorious sunny Charente countryside, we are close to all amenities, the pretty village of Massignac has a baker, village store, chemist and post office, as well as a very helpful tourist information office. There is also a primary school and GP surgery. The town of Chabanais with banks and a large Supermarket is only 12km away. The area offers a wealth of many interesting historical attractions; Roman ruins, Templar churches and a little further afield the June 10th 1944 Martyr village at Oradour-sur-Glane. The are also plenty of opportunities to enjoy outdoor activities fishing, cycling, walking and horse riding. There are abundance of markets selling local produce and the brocante and brick a brac offering all kinds of treasure to the antique hunters. The Charente is also renowned for its fine wine and speciality food.|

Nearby Rochechouart is a pretty walled town with an attractive castle. The Chateau de Rochechouart dates its origins to the 13th century and is now home to the interesting Museum of Modern Art. Although the town purports to be 'the countryside of the meteorite', because 214 million years ago an enormous six billion tonne meteorite smashed into this spot - probably one of the largest meteorites ever to hit the earth - there is little evidence remaining of this catastrophic event today. However Rochechouart does have the Espace Météorite, a small museum, offering an insight into the solar system, meteorites, effects and consequences of meteorite's fall and the impact crater of Rochechouart-Chassenon.
Every 7 years Rochechouart holds an event called The Osensions Rochechouart, which will occur again in 2023; consisting of services, concerts and processions in medieval costume around the walled streets of the town of Rochechouart.
A little further afield are the vineyards of Cognac which is regarded as the Brandy capital of the world. No visit to the Charente region would be complete without a tour of one of the big distilleries; Hennessy, Martell, Remy Martin, Courvoisier etc. Most run guided tours including explanations of the grape growing process, distillation and demonstrations of blending techniques often including free tasting, most charge admission and it is worth pre booking to ensure your tour is in the language of your choice.
Just a few of the many attractions we would recommend visiting whilst holidaying in the Charente.
This Gite is a little piece of heaven. We had the most peaceful holiday. It is set in a tranquil garden, the pool and outdoor eating area’s were just fabulous. Inside the Gite is everything you need and more.Very tastefully decorated through out, with a very french feel about the furniture. We hardly saw any traffic in the surrounding villages, it really was a pleasure driving. A car is a must, to get to see the quaint towns and villages. Also, to stock up on essentials, the nearest large supermarket was about 20 minutes drive away.
Our hosts, Louise and Shaun were lovely, and very thoughtful. A huge welcome basket was left for us, along with bread, eggs , pastries and a bottle of wine. They were always on hand if we needed them, but very discreet if we wanted our privacy.
We cannot praise them highly enough, and thoroughly recommend this Gite for a holiday.
Thank you both.
Thank you so much for your kind and informative review. You were lovely guests, whom we would welcome back at any time, and we are delighted that you enjoyed your stay at Les Petites Cerises and this beautiful part of France.
A generous welcome pack included everything needed for a good start to our holiday - a chilled bottle of rose to enjoy on arrival and a selection of jam, brioche, croissants and pain au chocolat to start our holiday with a good breakfast. The garden is a delight, with plenty of places to relax either by the pool or in a shady nook. There is a great space for alfresco dining with the barbecue on hand. Louise and Shaun are excellent hosts - discreet, but on hand whenever needed for advice or just a chat.
This is 'La France Profonde' - rolling bucolic countryside ideal for walking & cycling, but still with plenty to see and do within a short drive. We had a great holiday.
It was our pleasure! Thank you for you lovely and informative review, we are so pleased you enjoyed your stay. We would love to see you again.
We stayed here for a week's holiday. Beautifully clean and extremely well provided with all the facilities you could possibly need! The pool was clean and refreshing, especially on the hottest of days. Very friendly hosts who are available if needed but otherwise leave you to your own devices to enjoy yourself. 2 minute drive to local bakery with supermarkets and places of interest not very far away. We had a great time and will definitely be back!
Thank you for your kind review, we are so pleased that you enjoyed your stay with us and the beautiful Haute Charente area. We would love to see you all again soon.
This family-run Gite is set in beautiful grounds in lovely French countryside. The external area had 2 private areas for eating, including a large outside dining table next to the BBQ. The pool area was lovely and we enjoyed overlooking the whole well-kept garden. We were lucky enough to enjoy every day on the pool decking due to the fabulous weather.
Inside the Gite there was everything that you could possible need. The kitchen was well-equipped including the little things like a lemon squeezer and garlic press. Excellent if you decide to cook.
The rooms were beautifully decorated in a French Style and were extremely comfortable. Little bits like the lavender bags in the drawers were really a lovely touch!
The whole place was lovely and clean and we were met by Louise and Shaun when we arrived. They ran through everything with us and then left us to it. They were excellent hosts who were there if we required any advice but always respected our privacy. Their "Welcome Basket" and bottle of wine was greatly appreciated.
A really lovely place to stay in a beautiful part of France.
