We returned to GiteAdore after a fabulous break last year. This time, travelling as a couple we stayed in the smallest of the small 4 Gites available.
The Gite itself is well presented and clean, just watch out for small lizards paying a visit! This Gite is the only one with seating areas front and back to make the most of morning and evening sunshine (or shade). Beds are comfy and a fan is available if the temperature start rise. The TV in the lounge has a good selection of UK channels.
The highlight of this property is the pool. No fighting for sunbeds plenty of grass and patio areas to choose from. Plus a fridge for a cold drink or two.
The area is quiet, at night families either sit chatting on the patio or star gaze as there is no light pollution. There are lovely walks around the property, the nearest village has a Brocante, Artisan Bar(open Weds Thurs Fri) which serves excellent beer and burgers and a vineyard that will educate you in wine and brandy making as well as an opportunity to taste and buy.
If you want a relaxing get away from it break this is the place for you. When the peace and quiet gets too much there is lots to explore within a short drive - Auberterre, Riberac and villebois or slightly further afield - Cognac, Perigeux and Saint Emilion.
Tim, the owner, lives on site and is very friendly and nearly always around if you need anything.
What a gem we have found in Le Chataignier! Group of 4 connected gites up a small lane, ranging from 6 bed (where we stayed) to 12 bed, with large garden out the back and plenty of parking in the shade.
Our gite had a huge kitchen, with hob, oven, washing machine & dishwasher, and was well stocked with crockery & cutlery. Sitting room was comfortable with satellite TV. Bedrooms were spacious, clean and comfortable, and the bathroom had fab power shower. A hairdryer was provided for us ladies! Bed linen and towels were changed after 1 week, and pool towels were also provided.
Each gite has its own terrace with BBQ, table & chairs, sun loungers and washing line. There are swings for the kids and plenty of space to kick a ball around. There is a large pool and a small one for toddlers, both behind a gate for safety. There are plenty of sun loungers, a BBQ, outdoor fridge, and a speaker to plug your i-phone into for some sounds at the pool. There is a large bamboo canopy for shade, plus plenty of parasols.
Tim (owner) lives adjacent, and is available for queries, and he has 2 lovely Sheepdogs, Rowan & Looping, who like to pop into your gite to check all is in order! Tim is very friendly, helpful and welcoming. We arrived to basic provisions and a bottle of Rose in our fridge. Very nice personal touch.
Boulangerie and supermarket 10 minute drive away. Sporadic phone signal and limited Wi-fi (hoorah! get away from life!). We are already planning our return trip next summer.
We had a wonderfull two week stay at Giteadore-Le Chataigner. We were a party of two adults and two children 11 an 16 years old. Tim Baldwin, the owner, makes you really feel at home. You immediatly feel welcome. Not only his charming character and two dogs, but also because of his welcoming package, containing, wine, softdrinks, bread, butter, cheese, jam, etc.
The gite is very complete. It has a dishwasher, washing machine and even an ironing board. It's also very large with a large kitchen, sitting area, two palaces to sit comfortably outside with bbq's and three bedrooms. The only problem is that in some parts, the first floor is rather low, so mind your head.
It's not fancy, but everything is just fine.
The pool is very nice. It has one large pool area, completed with two smaller baths for children.
In the morning you drive 5-10 minutes to St.Severin to go to buy your croissants and whatever small shoppings you need.
Nearby is Aubeterre, for some nice restaurants.
We certainly want to go back there.
Thanks for the review, Harry. I really enjoyed having you here as my guests and the dogs are missing you already!
