For anyone with an interest in history, we recommend a visit to the war memorial at the "martyr" town of Oradour sur Glane. Here, in the period leading up to the end of the second world war, after the alleged capture of a Nazi officer by the French resistance, all the inhabitants of the town were murdered by a division of the German Nazi Waffen SS and the village was destroyed. Oradour is only 10 minutes drive from Les Croix, it has been preserved exactly as it was left at the end of the war, and is a reminder to all of the atrocities committed in the war. A visitor centre and a tour of the old ruined village are recommended.
Canoeing on the River Vienne, a 2.5 hour session starting at Excideuil which is a 30 minute drive from Les Croix, the organisers will collect you from Manot which is the finish point and drive you back to collect your vehicle at Excideuil. No experience is neccessary, the River is very beautiful and tranquil - it is a superb way to spend an afternoon and we can make all the arrangements for you.
The medieval town of Confolens is just 20 minutes drive from Les Croix, a pretty, scenic town with the River Vienne flowing through its center.
The newly renovated pool complex in St Junien provides 4 pools, 2 indoor and 2 outside with a water slide.
Although 1.5 hours drive away, the unique, futuristic themed park in Poitiers is well worth a visit. Futuroscope, or Parc du Futuroscope is a French theme park based upon multimedia, cinematographic futuroscope and audio-visual techniques. It has several 3D cinemas and a few 4D cinemas along with other attractions and shows, some of which are the only examples in the world.
The town labels itself as 'the countryside of the meteorite', because 214 million years ago an enormous six billion tonne meteorite smashed into this spot - probably one of the largest meteorites ever to hit the earth.
The town has a small museum associated with the meteorite and the history of the town and there is a large Chateau which is open to the public, there are restaurants in the square with outside seating areas - perfect for lunch !
Family amusement park, 30 minutes drive away with lots of kids rides, boats, go-karts, pedalos, train etc. Open March - September.
There are plenty of Local places to eat, from cheap and cheerful to Haute-Cuisine - we will be happy to point you in the right direction -
whatever you fancy !
