Maison Belair is set in a private, rural location where peace, tranquility and relaxation are the order of the day with it's own private, heated saltwater large pool. Perfect for either one or two families to share. Satellite 20GB Broadband internet and outside table tennis.
Our beautiful house is built into the hillside, an 'upside down house' as the main living accommodation is upstairs, to make the most of the beautiful views. The kitchen opens out onto the long balcony with patio chairs and a large table, this makes it the perfect location to enjoy a relaxing meal accompanied by a glass or 2 of wine, whilst enjoying the panoramic views over the swimming pool and to the rolling Dordogne hills beyond.
The large, private 12m x 6m outdoor heated saltwater swimming pool with terracing and sun-bathing areas is heated to 26 degrees. The house is approx 2.5km from the village of St Severin where there is an award winning bakery! Very good restaurants, with excellent French country value, can be found in the local surrounding villages too.
The villa is a star-gazers paradise with millions of stars coming out at night due to the complete absence of any night pollution.
The nearest main town is Riberac, 15 minutes away and the historic hilltop village of Aubeterre-sur-Dronne is just 10 minutes away. Aubeterre is officially recorded as one of the most beautiful villages in the whole of France and benefits from an inland man-made beach with watersports, to boot.
Fully equipped with dishwasher, gas hob, electric oven, large stand alone fridge-freezer, pots and pans supplied with usual crockery, cutlery and obligatory wine glasses!
The house is an upside down design to take advantage of the superb views. So, this means the kitchen is upstairs and opens out onto a lovely balcony overlooking the Dordogne hills. The dining room inside also looks at the same view, opening onto the balcony, too.
Table in dining room seats 8, as does a large balcony table, for great al fresco dining,
This is part of a lounge-dining area and has a lovely fireplace, bright and airy, looking out at the field around the house (part of our land). Equipped with LCD tv and UK FreeSat, dvd with plethora of childrens Disney films. Also a Bluetooth speaker you can link your phone too and play your own music. Comfortable lounge sofas and chairs.

When my Wife, Jeanette, met me over 30yrs ago, I said I knew France (my 'experience' was one day trip to Boulogne!). Well, Jeanette wanted to introduce me to a much 'bigger France', so before the children came along, we travelled around many areas in France with our little tent and had some fabulous, fun experiences getting to know the French people, who were so warm and friendly, particularly as we had our pigeon French at the ready. We now have two adult children who adore Maison Belair, too!
|Year property purchased||1997|
|Why this location?||During Summer 1997, we toured south Charente / north Dordogne and met such lovely people. We had it at the back of our minds since 1990 that, one day, we would love to own a holiday home in France and when we came to this area, we felt this was perfect for us. The one thing we knew was that we wanted a swimming pool and so we set about looking at properties with swimming pools. However, all the properties we saw seemed to have beautiful pools, but awful houses, so we thought let's look for our ideal house first and then build a pool ourselves. Jeanette was 6 months pregnant, looking around properties in 90*F, so wonder just how we kept on looking! But on seeing Maison Belair, it was such a spectacular setting - the property was beautiful and the views remain the very best we have ever seen.|
|Unique benefits of property||We added the heated swimming pool in 1998, and in 2016 we changed it to be a saltwater pool which is amazing and leaves your skin feeling conditioned instead of stripped by chlorine. Over the years we have upgraded the bathrooms and showers. We've redecorated and have kept the warm "French" feel in the rooms upstairs with a more modern feel at the garden level. To get to Maison Belair is a very easy drive - from Calais it takes around 7 hours and is all motorway and dual carriageway until you get to Angouleme, (around 40 mins from the villa). One of the reasons we let people stay at our villa is that now our children are older, they want to see more of the World, other than the Charente and it would be a shame to have such a beautiful property not being enjoyed by somebody. We've had many happy family holidays at Maison Belair and in the Summer one of everyone's particular favourites is a visit to nearby Lac Jemaye where the canoes are provided free of charge by the local Council.|
Man made beaches at Lac Jamay near Riberac where they have free canoes during summer holiday season, Aubeterre-sur-Dronne and St Aulaye (en route to St Emilion).
Crazy golf course just outside the local village of St Severin is great fun for all the family.
Tennis Courts can be booked at the Tabac or Pharmacy in St Severin, though you will need to take your own equipment.
The hilly countryside around Maison Belair is fantastic for cycling and we would recommend taking your bicycles with you, though these can also be hired locally.
Bordeaux, with its fabulous Cité du Vin exhibition centre, the Medoc only 75 minites away, St Emilion (less than an hour away), Bergerac, Montbazillac, Sauternes, also with Cognac just 50 minutes to the north. A Wine Lovers paradis!
Aubeterre (a member of the ‘Most Beautiful Villages of France), is a medieval village less than 10 minutes away, which is very pretty and has an amazing underground church, being the oldest in France. Also great places to eat:-)
We have now been visiting Maison Belair for a number of years and it really is a delightful holiday home. The setting is wonderful and in the house everything you need for your stay is there for you. Great swimming pool and the balcony ideal for al fresco dining. Local village has great bakery and Spar shop sells all you might need.Further afield there are many pretty villages with plenty of places to eat. For us, coming to Maison Belair is the highlight of our year. we have been to many holiday homes in France but this place ticks all the boxes. Edward and Jeanette are always a pleasure to deal with and nothing is too much trouble for them.
Dear Ann and Mike, thank you for your lovely review. It has been a real pleasure for Jeanette and I to welcome you to Maison Belair for the last few years and we're delighted that you are re-booking again. It is lovely that you enjoy the swimming pool so much, creating a truly warm pool was a key priority when we first bought Maison Belair, for the last 3 years being salt water making it even better, not to mention the healthiest option. You made us smile in mentioning our local Spar: is there anything it doesn't sell, I have to ask? Indeed an incredible shop.
Thank you for your kind comments about Jeanette and mine's efforts to assist as needed, we do our best...usually it suffices:-) We look forward to your return to Maison Belair. All the best, Edward and Jeanette.
We were lucky enough to have stayed at Maison Belair, during the last week of the school holidays. We travelled with our two children, aged 8yrs and 21months. The drive to Chavenac, was so scenic and the villa itself could not have been positioned in a more idilic spot. The views really were amazing. We were lucky to watch the sunrise on two occasions during our stay.
The villa was clean and nicely maintained. We did lose power, one morning, after a huge thunder storm. We informed the owner, and a very nice French man, Jean Paul, dropped by to assist us!
The villa was nicely equipped, from the kitchen utensils, to the DVD’s and board games supplied.
The villa was positioned a few minutes drive from the local boulangerie, where we went to purchase our fresh croissants for breakfast. Just over the road from the boulangerie, was also a wonderful Italian restaurant. You really don’t need too go to far, if you don’t want to.
We also packed a picnic and spent a lovely day at Grand Etang de Le Jemaye, the nearby man made beach, which the kids loved!
We had the most wonderful weather during our stay, the swimming pool was just amazing! It’s huge and was just what we needed during the hot weather. The pool has plenty of sun loungers to choose from and two big parasols. These provided the perfect amount of shade for the children to take a break under.
The only thing I may add to the villa, would be the use of a big BBQ!
We are hoping to return again, same time, next year !
Thank you, "Family Mole", for such a lovely review and for being great guests at Maison Belair.
You have made us smile, being reminded by mention of your 21 month old, of our own baby Son arriving on his first visit to Maison Belair back in 1997. It was indeed the scenary that sold the house to us, to this day we are yet to see anywhere else more idilic, as you say. That Italian is one of our favourites, so close to the villa in the local village - glad you found it and we hope they had plenty of their superb buffalo mozzarella in stock for you! Lac Jemaye is our absolutel favourite, too and the free canoes are wonderful, let alone all those incredibly tiny fish in the lovely clear waters by the beach there.
You must have read out mind this Summer, as we closed the house don only last week and felt the BBQ was a little small, so have just installed a fab Weber Kettle BBQ...hopefully you can test it out next year? Jeanette and I hope to see you again soon and you return to Maison Belair, our little piece of 'Paradis en France' as we like to call it.
Thanks, again, Edward & Jeanette
This is a little oasis located just far enough from main roads as to remain undisturbed by traffic but near enough to St. Severin that popping out for morning coffee/croissants is very simple. As you pull into the driveway you’re struck by the balcony providing uninterrupted views of the Charente. The good size pool grabs the attention next, just far enough away from the house for swimmers’ revelry not to disturb those on the balcony but close enough to the house to reach it quickly if any of the little ones get caught short. The property itself is sizeable and perfect for a variety of guests. We were two families and the two floor layout, with bathroom facilities on each, allowed us to have time apart but the large lounge/dining area was great for communal activities, games, chatting or watching TV. The well equipped kitchen exits directly onto the balcony which is where we ate all our meals. It was lovely to breakfast outside with the sun beating down in the mornings and to enjoy our cheese and wine, bought from the local vineyards, either as part of a long lunch or at the end of the day. When we managed to drag the children away from the pool to explore the local area, Aubeterre and Riberac provided many options for eating, drinking and generally enjoying French hospitality. Overall we enjoyed the perfect holiday.....Re. the comment made by a previous reviewer wrt. regarding repayment of deposit, we were reimbursed promptly and fully with no quibble regarding deductions.
Dear David. Thank you for such a comprehensive great review, this is much appreciated for you taking the time. The pool clearly served you all rather well, too, so that's great. We must confess, too, that eating on the balcony, looking at the glorious views is probably our own favourite past-time -. especially after returning from the likes of St Emilion and a marche fromage en route back! I gather you had wonderful weather on your visit and it's good to hear how you explored the local towns and villages. We really hope you and your lovely Family come back to Maison Belair soon, I understand you are thinking already about 2020, so that's great and we'd love to welcome you all once again to our little piece of 'Paradis en France'. Thanks, again, Edward & Jeanette
We stayed at Maison Belair in late May with kids and grandkids and caught the early summer weather just right, so that the grandkids really made the most of the pool.
A brilliant place set up perfectly for a family with children to enjoy the pool facilities.
Very well supplied with a good kitchen and plenty of options for eating indoors or outside.
Also just far enough from the local village to be quiet, but close enough to use the decent local shops and pick up those important morning croissants!
When we did drag ourselves away from the villa we found that the surrounding towns and village had excellent facilities, mainly restaurants interesting us. Particularly liked Aubeterre for a stroll and lunch, pus interesting sights.
We loved the place, and would happily go there again.
Dear Jonathan. Thank you very much indd for your great review, we very much appreciate you taking the time. Thank you for noting your exploits in our Guest Book, too - these were a fun read when we recently revisited Maison Belair ourselves. The pool served you really well, too, we see, so that's great. The downstairs ensuite bedroom is particularly good for that, as you step out onto the patio area and it's just a short hop and a skip down to the pool, hope you had some perfect morning swims. Eating on the balcony, looking at the glorious views is probably our own favourite past-time, perhaps the only distraction being the opportunity to take the 10 minutes drive over to Aubeterre, as you mention, to eat in the Square there, so pleased you enjoyed that. You certainly did well with the weather, I think you were there just prior to the June heatwave, where it peaked at over 40*C. In late May, you had a more comfortable 30*C plus, doubtless with a lovely cooling breeze. We really hope you and your delightful Family return to Maison Belair at some point, our little piece of 'Paradis en France' as we like to call it. Thanks, again, Edward & Jeanette
