Les Trois Fers is a charming old stone house with a swimming pool and pretty gardens on the border of the Dordogne and Charente department. It is just 5 minutes from the ever popular Aubeterre-sur-Dronne, one of the "plus beaux villages de France" which offers plenty of characterful shops, restaurants and quaint streets to explore. Locally there is plenty to see and do including popular river beaches for swimming, safe canoeing, art and craft shops and the amazing historic underground church which holds wonderful concerts in summer.
This is our private holiday home which we only rent for short periods, so the furnishings are personal to us, with period furniture, antiques, decorations and paintings creating a special homely ambiance that you won't find in a regular holiday rental.
The main house has 4 bedrooms, sleeping 8 people.
There is a very pretty garden with some gorgeous roses, vines, wisteria and lavenders as well as plenty of lawns and secluded areas to enjoy. The 10m x 5m swimming pool has a Roman end with steps and it is purified by salt, so very gentle on the skin and no nasty chlorine smells. It is surrounded by a large paved terrace with palm tree, roses and olive trees from where you have lovely views down the Dronne valley. There is plenty of space to relax on loungers or poolside furniture and soak up some sunshine before another dip in the pool.
By the back covered deck there's a pond which is home to marsh frogs, gold fish and dragon flies.
The dining area can comfortably seat 8 (on those rare occasions when you might want to eat inside!). For the holiday chefs there's a fully equipped kitchen with Neff large oven, five burner gas hob, fridge, toaster, kettle, double sink. Off the kitchen is a utility room with dishwasher, freezer, microwave and a downstairs wc.
A large L-shaped bright and airy open plan space including a living area with 4 seater settee, 3 seater settee, armchair, ottoman, 48" wide screen tv (UK tv channels) and dvd player. The chestnut floorboards, oak beams and white stone fireplace make it a really characterful room to relax in. You can open the frenchdoors to hear the relaxing sound of the water from the fountain outside.
There's also a gamesroom - a large bright space with table tennis table, desk, sofa and second tv with dvd player and a large selection of dvd's. There's a record player with a selection of old vinyl records which you can listen to. The 2 sets of frenchdoors open out to the covered open deck at the back of the house, which has a dining table and chairs, plus at the other end, a 3-seater sofa and 2 armchairs where you can relax and listen to the marsh frogs and cicadas, whilst spying on the lizards sunning themselves.
Four bedrooms, 3 doubles and a twin. One bedroom with en suite bathroom, plus one family shower room.
A large double bedroom with super comfortable brand new king size bed. Fitted oak wardrobes, en suite bathroom with bath and shower. Direct access to a charming covered balcony with seating - great views!

|Why this location?||Very accessible from the UK. We love this area. Peaceful, picturesque and friendly people. Plenty to see and do. With white limestone buildings and terracotta roofs, sunflowers, white chalky soil, the mesmerising sound of the cicadas, you definitely know you are abroad, very different from the UK. Lovely local sandy river beaches and also Lac Jemaye a 15 minute drive away with canoes to hire for free, plus restaurants. Beautiful Aubeterre-sur-Dronne (a "plus beau village") is a 5 minute drive away with a selection of good restaurants and shops, plus a 12th Century Monolithic underground church. You can also hire canoes there and paddle up the tranquil River Dronne stopping off to have a picnic on the river's edge. Local markets. Day trips to explore Perigueux, Bordeaux, Bergerac, Brantome, the Atlantic coast. Also St. Emilion is only a 45 minute drive away where you can do a tour of the vineyards in a small overland train, stopping off for a wine tasting at one of the chateaux.|
|Unique benefits of property||It's spacious, bright, airy, private, charmingly furnished, with beautiful gardens and a fabulous terrace and pool. It has lots of different areas outside where you can eat and relax - space for everyone to have some quiet time on their own, if wished. There is optional air conditioning in the large sitting room and also in the 2 bedrooms which both lead to a charming covered balcony which has a small table and 2 chairs, somewhere else to chill out and admire the far reaching views. There are 4 bicycles (2 road bikes and 2 mountain bikes) for guests to use - you can access one of the local cycling routes just outside the house. At night, you can gaze up at the huge, clear, all-enveloping starry sky, spotting shooting stars and looking up at the Milky Way.|
The main attraction is the wonderfully picturesque village of Aubeterre-sur-Dronne, one of France's "plus beaux village" and a "Petit cité de caractere". Built on a hillside with stunning views into the Dordogne department Aubeterre has lots to offer: a spendid old chateau, a fine church on the St Jacques de Compostela route, beautiful old limestone houses, some literally carved out of the clifftop, picturesque lanes and back-streets to explore, a great selection of restaurants, some bijou shops and artisan galleries and a vibrant Sunday market. The main square is a special place to sit and take in the atmosphere, preferably while sipping a glass of Pineau de Charentes, the local aperitif. The unique underground church, the "Eglise monolithique" is an essential visit - it a fascinating building and a magical setting for musical concerts in the summer.
Our local village, Bonnes, is very pretty as it sits right on the river Dronne. There is a lovely old church and a restored chateau which is open to visitors in the summer. There is a pizzeria, a restaurant and a boulangerie.
Locally, river swimming is lovely at both Aubeterre and St Aulaye where there are fine sandy beaches and cafe restaurants at the waters edge. Canoeing is also very popular and not too challenging. As mentioned before cycling and walking is also very popular - maps are provided.
Bordeaux is one hour by car. You can park outside the city and take the tram in. Thanks to massive investment the city is now beautifully clean and pedestrianised in many areas. The Cité du Vin is spectacular and worth a trip.
Bourdeilles and Brantome are 30-45 minutes away and make for a great day trip. And Perigueux is about 50 minutes....a historic city with a fantastic vieille ville.
The coast can be reached in just over and hour and there are some great beaches, quaint villages and wonderful seafood restaurants.
There are some wonderful day trips into the heart of the historic Dordogne and also to the beautiful Atlantic beaches and seaside towns. We provide details and suggestions in our welcome pack.
There is a great choice of restaurants nearby. We provide a full list of recommendations and information in our welcome pack
We had a brilliant week at Les Trois Fers, and couldn't fault this terrific property. It was exceptionally well equipped and has everything you could need/want for your stay.
The photos really don't do it justice, or prepare you for the beautiful interior and fabulous grounds of the house on arrival.
The outside space is wonderful and the accommodation itself is beautifully furnished to a high standard and is very comfortable.
We spent some great times around the pool, had a lovely BBQ, and spent most evenings sat on the covered deck listening to the frogs in the pond, and the crickets around the large garden.
The village of Bonnes is a short drive away and has a lovely Boulangerie for your daily baguettes and cakes. Slightly further afield is Saint-Aulaye with the lovely relaxed Bar Restaurant De La Plage right on the river beach.
We also visited Aubeterre-Sur-Dronne and lunched at La Garage - delicious burgers and wraps.
All in all, everyone (young and older) had a great time and would love to return... just wish we could have stayed longer!
Many thanks for your comments - so glad you all enjoyed staying at the house and had a wonderful holiday. Look forward to welcoming you back in the future ...
