I live in Cornwall, and enjoy rural community life and have a passion for history, which is why I bought this holiday home in Verteuil. Dominated by its 15C Chateau, it is an ideal place to relax with cafes/restaurants and local shops in walking distance of the house. The river Charente flows through the centre and is a great spot to fish, swim and picnic. Surrounded by fields of sunflowers, there are many opportunities for walks. The medieval towns of Angouleme and Poitiers are 30 mins away.

|Why this location?||Beautiful countryside and a village with plenty of history, but is still a thriving centre with local produce shops, restaurants and a working mill. Verteuil is just off the N10 which is a dual carriage way offering easy access to Poitiers (40 mins) and the lovely walled town of Angouleme which has a large shopping centre and several markets. The nearest town is Ruffec (5 mins drive) which has supermarkets and a twice weekly market. Canoes can also be hired here, which is a lovely way of exploring the area. There are many brocantes in the area throughout the summer. Verteuil is a relaxing place, with many opportunities for countryside walks from the property. You can also visit the 15thC chateau. In July and August, all the town gathers by the river for a night picnic where you can buy local food and have it cooked while you wait. Temperatures from June to October are regularly in the 30c. 45 mins drive away is the start of the cognac region with its wine trails, and wine tasting.|
|Unique benefits of property||18thC town house in the middle of the town, and yet quiet and relaxing. It has a rear courtyard with garden furniture and bbq, and stairs leading to upper lawn area with lovely views over the nearby chateau. Only a couple of mins walk from local shops, cafes and a working mill. Featured in James Martin's recent ITV series on France. The house has many original features, stone walls and wooden floors and beams. Downstairs is an open plan kitchen/diner/sitting room, with a fireplace and multi fuelled stove. Door from kitchen leads to private outside areas. Upstairs are one double bedroom en suite, and one twin with a separate wc and shower room. Although there is no parking at the property, there is a free car park 1 min away, and opportunity for roadside parking nearby. Also 2 mins walking distance is a butcher, baker and chemist. We often eat at the Porte Bleu, just 5 doors down from us. A short walk to the river Charente where you can picnic, fish and play boules.|
