Chez Durandeau is a converted Charente farmhouse with a private swimming pool, set in a lovely south facing sunny garden.

The Gite can accommodate up to 6 people and is set in a peaceful hamlet in the southern Charente, a short distance from local amenities.

The house, is spacious and comfortably furnished, and remains cool in summer; the ideal place for a quiet, relaxing holiday in France. All our rooms have been renovated and maintain the traditional features with stone walls and wooden beams.

Kitchen and dining

The fully equipped kitchen with a large dining table is the centre of the house.

The kitchen has a microwave, dishwasher, washing machine, fridge and freezer.

Just outside the kitchen is an outdoor dining area with an awning, here you can sit and watch the sun go down.

Living rooms

Downstairs there is a quiet lounge with sofa and chairs for reading or relaxing indoors.

Upstairs, the Studio is a large open plan space with TV lounge with British and French satellite TV and a separate sleeping area.

Bedrooms

Bedroom 1: (upstairs) is a light spacious room; with a king size double bed and en-suite shower room/wc.

Bedroom 2: (downstairs) is a large double or twin room with an adjacent luxury shower room and separate WC.

The Studio: (upstairs) is a large open plan space. It has a sleeping area (2 singles) and a separate TV lounge with French and British satellite TV.

There is a third separate WC (downstairs).

The Gite has French and British satellite TV.

Free, WiFi is available (We live in rural France and this means the WIFI speed can vary and the band width is not suitable for streaming).

Garden and outside

The south-facing garden and lawns surround the large swimming pool with a paved sun terrace. The swimming pool is for your private use.

Just outside the kitchen is an outdoor dining area with an awning, here you can sit and watch the sun go down.

The Gite has secure private parking in the courtyard, and your car can be sheltered from the weather under a tiled roof.

Visitor suitability

The Pool: There is a large swimming pool for your private use, please note the house is not suitable for young children because the pool is not fenced. The pool does have an alarm to comply with French law. Children must be supervised at all times. The pool is closed in the Winter.

Arrival & Departure: We are usually flexible about arrival/departure days. In the schools holidays and peak periods arrival and departure is on a Saturday and the minimum booking period is 7 nights.

The Gite is unsuitable for visitors using a wheelchair.

Guest access: The gite has its own entrance and facilities. We live next door and always respect our guests’ privacy and remain at your disposal for any tips or advice on where to go and what to do.

Guest interaction: We meet and greet all our guests. A range of informative leaflets of activities, events and key sights are available. We will provide a few kitchen essential, and can offer a shopping service for late arrivals if required.

Other things to note:
To enjoy the house and the area it is essential to have a car.
Under local laws we are obliged to collect "la taxe de séjour" - tourist/ occupancy tax of 0.30 euros per person over 13 years of age per night.

Why this location? We chose this lovely part of France because it has a sunny climate. Is close to the wine regions, the coast and has beautiful rolling countryside.

Things to do locally

The roads are quiet for cycling and there is a network of cycle routes and tracks (including the VTT). There are a number of local walking circuits on the footpaths and lanes. At the nearby Etang Vallier Park you can wakeboard and water ski and go horse riding. Other local activities include canoeing and golf.

Local facilities

Chalais and Brossac are both a 10 minute drive. Chalais - provides everything you will need for your stay. There is a market each Monday morning; large supermarket a number of bakers and butchers, bank, chemist, post office, tabacs, Tourist Information and restaurants. Train station.

Exploring the area: Excursions and day trips

If you wish to explore the area, there are a number of Discovery Circuits.

Nearby is the beautiful village Aubeterre sur Dronne with historic buildings; shops; restaurants, activities on the river, including a sandy beach.

The hilltop city of Angouleme with its Comic Festival and Circuit de Ramparts classic car races, trips on the river and the opportunity to take a stroll through the pedestrian streets within the walls of the upper town.

The wine regions of Bordeaux, and St Emilion are a short drive.

Périgueux with its roman remains & medieval streets and buildings; Brantome - the Venice of France; Cognac with its ancient streets and river; and the Roman town of Saintes, are a little further away.
