We are an English/German couple and have lived in the La Rochefoucald area for 15 years. Our daughters both went to school in La Rochefoucauld and we now live about 20 minutes away in the nearby town of Montbron.

An hour drive to famous area of Cognac - every year the blues festival attracts world renown international artists
Renowned for its brandy, the city of Cognac is situated on both sides of the Charente river and benefits from a pleasant setting. Besides its famous speciality, Cognac has preserved a number of historic houses, buildings and monuments, such as the Valois castle, the Saint-Jacques gateway flanked by twin machicolated, round towers, and the Saint-Léger church built in the 12th century, evidence of its rich past.
Several important Cognac houses are open to the public for brandy cellar visits and tastings.
Originating from the 11th Century the Chateau de La Rochefoucauld is within 5 minutes walk. Today, one wing remains a family home and much of the rest is open to the public. Guided tours of the libraries are sometimes available, and there are costumes for children and adults to wear during their exploration of the rest of the public areas, which include several furnished rooms, and some of the foundations within the rock.
Some of our favourite places to eat locally and enjoy the atmosphere of traditional cafés :
Chez Stef - situated in front of the Chateau this great restaurant is well known for it’s excellent food and buzzing atmosphere. In summer you can sit outside directly under the Chateau. Best known for it’s Limousin beef but also serve fish and large selection of home made pizzas.
Le Rupificaldien - unique and cozy little café on the market square, various types of freshly roasted coffee and a fantastic selection of teas. Outside seating area in courtyard. Always buzzing with locals.
