About this property

Freedom to Relax in Comfort. This cottage/gite is in a rural setting.

La Maison de Campagne was completely renovated between 2010 and 2013.

The house now sleeps up to 7-8 people in total comfort. New to 2018 will be a plunge pool, ideal for both children and adults alike. It is conveniently situated in the heart of the Charentaise countryside, offering easy access to all amenities.

Kitchen and dining

There is a fully equipped modern kitchen including a dishwasher, electric oven and hob, microwave, separate built in fridge and freezer, plenty of worktop space and a large kitchen table. Off the kitchen is a utility room with a washer, dryer, and second fridge-freezer and ironing facilities. There is also a separate wc/cloakroom.

Living rooms

There is a large, light and airy L-shaped lounge with a feature fireplace, tiled floors and staircase with wooden balustrade, plenty of seating, tv, dvd and a dining area. Relax reading a book in the built-in window seat or just gaze out into the garden, accessed by convenient doors which lead directly onto the outside areas.

Upstairs there are 3 good sized double bedrooms and the en suite master bedroom also has a cot/infant room annexe. The second bedroom has both a double and a single bed and the third bedroom a double bed. Exposed stone walls and wooden beams feature throughout, giving a cosy and comfortable ambience. Externally, you can enjoy breakfast on the master bedroom balcony for a great start to your day.

For your convenience, there are 3 separate bath/cloakrooms. Off the landing is the large main family bathroom with overbath shower, wash hand basin and wc. The main bedroom has the en suite shower room which has a corner shower unit with body jets, floating vanity unit and wc. Downstairs, off the utility room, is the very handy wc/cloakroom with corner washbasin.

Although we don't expect you to need it, due to the very wam climate here in summer, (second only to Provence, for number of yearly sunshine hours in France), there are 2 woodburning stoves.

The kitchen woodburner has an integral water tank which you can choose to run the downstairs underfloor heating, the upstairs radiators, the domestic hot water or any combination of the 3.

Summer hot water is provided by 3 large solar panels situated on the garage roof.

Brand new for 2018 will be a private plunge pool with a lounging area in a sunny part of the garden overlooked only by the comfortable sunroom/conservatory.

For your convenience, we also provide the following: tv with UK Freesat channels; a dvd player and collection of dvd’s; wi-fi throughout and a collection of books and games.

Outdoor play equipment including boules, badminton and cricket sets etc along with adult and children’s mountain bikes with helmets.

Garden and outside

As La Maison de Campagne is situated in a tiny hamlet of only 2 houses, you can be assured on complete privacy and seclusion in the landscaped gardens. Outdoor dining areas are provided along with a built-in bbq.

There are pleasant countryside walks in the vicinity through the surrounding fields for you to enjoy.

Parking and garages

There is plenty of open parking available (enough for 5 cars) including a shaded carport.

Access to the garage will not be available although there is a large shed housing the bikes, loungers and play equipment etc.

Visitor suitability

We do not think it is suitable for disabled/wheelchair users as access is restricted, due to the stepped levels both in the house and garden. Sadly, no pets are allowed.

We operate a no-smoking policy inside the house, but please feel free to use the designated areas outside.

Information about any additional facilities

Local multi-lingual contact for any emergencies/breakdowns etc. In-house information board and full instructions on appliances etc will be available.

The Owner Recommends

Nearby and further afield.

A 15-minute stroll, or a 3-minute bike ride (for the more energetic) winding through the country lanes, leads to the village of St. Fraigne, with its excellent bakery (closed Tuesday) and wine shop/cafe. St. Fraigne also has a football stadium, boules and tennis courts, a post office and it's well known 'ephemeral' river gardens, which are renewed every year.

The nearby town of Aigre is just 8 km away and has a newly extended, well-stocked supermarket with petrol station, restaurants, banks, a pharmacy, shops and a weekly market every Thursday. If you need access to a greater range of shops and amenities, Ruffec is 25 minutes away by car with a LeClerc and Lidl supermarket and even a McDonald's!

Of course, you may wish to visit Cognac or Angouleme (both 40 mins by car), or the beaches of Royan and La Rochelle, but less than 5 minutes away is the wonderful 'Plan d'eau' at Les Gours. This superb man-made lake has a large sandy beach with a paddling/bathing area, lovely shaded spots under the trees for picnics, a safe children's play area with swings and a slide, on-site toilet block, and a snack bar. During the summer months there is also a lifeguard on duty (times vary) and, in season, day licenses for fishermen are also available. However, for the more adventurous near Angouleme is the Nautilus waterpark with huge slides, wave machines, and diving boards etc., watch nature at the Valley des Singes (monkey valley), or maybe a trip to Futuroscope near Poitiers - the biggest theme park of it's kind in Europe. Visit 'Green Venice' and take a tour of the marshland waterways, or perhaps a trip on a restored 'Gabarre' on the beautiful River Charente, the list goes on and on, for more details, see our in-house information board on arrival.

This house has been recently converted from three cottages. The conversion is of a very high standard and now provides quality accommodation. It is set in the midst of farmland and we have never experienced such peace and tranquility.
We received a great welcome and continued very friendly support from friends of the owners during our four week stay.
A bakers and bar are in the nearby village and Aigre, a town some five miles away, has all normal facilities. We used the supermarket and restaurants there.
A personal highlight for me were the early morning cycle rides through the sleepy villages and of course collecting the breakfast baguettes. Plenty of bikes were provided. The pool was also put to good use.....very clean and well serviced throughout our stay.
We were sorry to leave!
