Hi we are Andrew & Ronda Dickie. We are born & bred kiwis (New Zealanders) who lived in Australia for 27 years before retiring & moving to the beautiful countryside of France. We brought an old home in serious need of a renovation, with 3 barns on 6 hectares of land. The last 2 years we devoted our time to the completion of our home renovation, creating an orchard, fencing off paddocks for sheep & chickens & establishing large veggie and flower gardens.Its now time to welcome guests to our home.
|Year property purchased||2015|
|Why this location?||Our gite is within easy driving distance of numerous beautiful and lively towns but maintains the peace and relaxation of country living which is just what you need when on holiday.
Aubeterre sur Dronne, known as one of the most beautiful villages in France is 3 km away and has several excellent restaurants, a beautiful village square, a bar, numerous village shops, a butcher, boulangerie (bakery), brocantes and a lovely river beach with a bar/bisto where you can hire canoes to cruise on the Dronne river.
|Unique benefits of property||Charbonnaud gite is a fully self contained cottage with 2 lovely light and airy bedrooms and a spacious open plan living/dining/ kitchen area. It has its own private outside space complete with a lovely entertainment area accessed by frenchdoors from both the living area and master bedroom. If you want to explore further there are several villages within a 20 minute drive that hold weekly markets perfect for all your culinary needs. A welcome pack is provided to all guests on arrival and you can also purchase fresh homegrown veggies, relishes, chutneys and free range eggs produced on our farm.|
The village square has several restaurants and eateries available for that long relaxing lunch or summer evening dining, two of which are Sucre and Sel and Hotel de France. For more upmarket dining we highly recommend the Au Cochon Prieur on the main road from Aubeterre to Laprade. If you want to venture further we recommend ‘a Table’ run by Jo and Alice ( as seen on a New Life in the Sun) at Cheval a 20 minute drive away.
Aubeterre holds a market every Sunday in the village square which is well worth a good look. It also has 3 permanent Brocantes for those special French antique purchases.
There are two churches to explore in Aubeterre as well as the ancient monolithic church. The ancient church itself, and its crypt, were hidden for centuries by a rock fall, and only rediscovered in the 1950’s. The sheer scale of this edifice with its nave 20 metres in height, its surrounding gallery, and the hundreds of stone tombs (“sarcophagi”) in the necropolis, bear witness to its importance as a sacred, religious destination.
A wonderful give in a beautiful country setting. Well equipped, very clean and comfortable. Fabulous pool and great hosts.
We had an excellent week's stay. The welcome hamper was really great, especially Ronda's pickle! Everything you could wish for was provided and the cottage was very clean and comfortable. Ronda and Andrew were excellent hosts and made us very welcome. The visiting deer and rabbits were a highlight. We especially recommend a visit to Aubeterre-sur Dronne for it's historic sights and restaurants. We definitely hope to revisit soon.
Thanks Stephanie for the review. It was lovely to have you both stay, we couldn’t have asked for better guests - you are welcome back anytime.
