About this property

An Elegant Maison de Maitre Set Within 5 acre Ground. This villa is in a village setting.

Set in its 5 acre park and woods, with a heated pool, in a peaceful village, L'Ancienne Ecole is an elegant holiday retreat – especially for art and literature lovers. The former village schoolroom makes a spacious welcoming living room with 3 double French windows opening to the patio and pool area and a log burner, antique lamps, candles and fire to provide warmth in the evening. Fine art adorns the walls and the house is festooned with shelves providing reading material for all tastes.

Location:
This historic area of Charente is bathed with light and offers beautiful rivers, outdoor activities, villages, churches, museums, markets, brocantes and plenty of festivals all summer. Angoulême, Cognac and Poitiers (with Futuroscope for children) are all within 60 kilometres and the coast and La Rochelle are easily reached. There are fine restaurants nearby and 2 supermarkets within 10 minutes’ drive. Bakeries are to be found in nearby villages.

Accommodation:
The Maison-de-Maitre house is reached from a small lane bordering the medieval Logis (the village’s refuge in time of war). Past the elegant front gates and the pool garden, any of 3 French windows leads to the magnificent former schoolroom. Measuring 60 square metres and with the original flagstones carpeted in Persian rugs, this is a beautiful family room in which to eat, relax and enjoy music and entertainment, with its thick stone walls rendering it cool in summer while retaining heat in cooler months.
Next to the living-room is the kitchen/diner, 25 square metres, fully equipped with 5 gas hobs, electric ovens, dishwasher, microwave and large fridge-freezer – a lovely breakfast area. Doors lead to a downstairs shower room/toilet and a ground-floor cellar with washing machine, tumble dryer and further fridges and freezers.
A curved staircase leads to the first floor with 3 comfortable double bedrooms (one en suite) furnished with antiques, and a delightful children’s room sleeping 3. Off the landing is a family bathroom in the period style with walk-in shower. Stairs lead to the 60-square-metre upper floor with 2 double and 2 single beds and sitting area with elegant furniture and Persian rugs – a lovely play-space or quiet reading area.

Surroundings:
Past the medieval logis now used for festivals, ornamental gates lead to the front drive. A separate driveway leads to the house through its large park-like grounds and beyond there is a shady wood belonging to the estate. The whole makes a spacious and charming family retreat in which to enjoy walks or games in spacious surroundings or simply chill out by the warm pool.

We spent 2 very relaxing weeks at L'Ancienne E'cole in August. It is situated in a very beautiful and quiet region, surrounded by sunflower fields. The weather was super and the we were able to spend our days outside in glorious sun.
The house is a characterful old school house, filled with the owner's amazing works of art and shelves full of literature. It is tastefully decorated and plenty of room for our party of 10 to stretch out and find a space to relax in the evenings.
We had 4 small children with us and they spent their days in the heated pool and playing cricket in the garden. The pool area is really fantastic with lots of sun beds and plenty of room to sit and read, or play around the pool. It gets the shade in the morning so my mum enjoyed an early swim and I did my yoga practise there before it became much warmer in the afternoons.
In the evenings, we ate together at the large table on the patio at the side of the house, looking out at the greenery and beautiful blue skies. Many happy memories made in that spot.
There is a choice of supermarkets nearby and some very quaint and picturesque villages to explore in the area. We did very little exploring as we found the house to be just what we needed for relaxing and keeping the children entertained.
We had a problem with the refrigerator whilst we were there but it was handled quickly by the owners, who were very helpful and kind.
All in all, a great holiday in a beautiful place. We hope to be back one day!
