La Libellule (The Dragonfly) is one of the 3 cottages or gites as they are known in France, at our wonderful old farmhouse Logis in the Charente between Cognac and the coast.
The Logis dates from the 17th Century and is set in 2 acres of gardens, meadow and orchard and is surrounded by vines and sunflowers.
The other two holiday cottages are La Sorciere ( The Sorceress) Ref 005362 and Le Figuier (Fig Tree) Ref 006410. They are both also advertised here on the Holiday France Direct site.
Each house has 2 bedrooms and is absolutely perfect for small families with 2 or 3 children.
The 3 houses are very well spaced on different sides of an enormous courtyard so that you can be very private if you want to but at the same time it is easy to make friends with other families staying here at the same time.
Living in the main house we are available if you should need us. We are situated on the border of the Charente Maritime (17) and Charente (16) departements, and only 4 to 5 hours drive from the Channel ports, just over an hour from the La Rochelle airport and an hour and a half from Bordeaux.
Only 10 minutes from historic Cognac with it's cobbled streets, pavement cafes, shops gardens, cognac houses to visit and numerous festivals throughout the year. We are also close to wonderful La Rochelle, the beautiful Romanesque small city of Saintes, medieval St Jean D'Angely, Angouleme, Royan, La Palmyre and much much more. Amazing sandy Atlantic beaches are under an hour away and then there is also the Lazy River Charente and nearby lakes for canoeing, fishing and even windsurfing.
Children are well catered for with a 10 x 5 metre heated pool, a sandpit and a large selection of toys. We also have table tennis, badminton and basket ball, football goals in the meadow, climbing frames, swings and slides plus bikes to borrow free of charge.
For those who really can't or don't wish to escape the buzz of everyday life completely, we do have a free, accessible wi-fi connection in the courtyard.
La Libellule is very spacious and south facing.
The 2 upstairs bedrooms are a really good size (huge parents room with king size bed, a good sized children's room with plenty of space for a cot. Upstairs wc/washbasin)
Downstairs there is a large bathroom with a big walk-in wet room type shower and a kitchen with access to the garden. The main living room has a dining area and a sitting area with sofa, tv ( UK Freeview channels) and music system with iPod dock.
There is also another door to the garden.
Kitchen with full sized cooker, fridge-freezer, microwave, coffee-maker and dishwasher plus all the utensils you could need.
Dining table, chairs and a good supply of tableware and glasses.
Large comfortable sitting/dining room.

Right outside there is a shaded seating area with a table and chairs for using the barbecue and outdoor eating plus space to simply relax.
The courtyard is well planted with trees and shrubs so that you feel very private even though the children can run around and play together in complete safety.
The re is a lovely view of the pool from the main bedroom in La Libellule.
Philip keeps the heated pool sparkling clean. It is fenced, securely gated and also has an alarm. With a safe 1metre 20 depth it is great for fun and games as well as getting a few lengths in and lots of children have learned to swim here on their holidays. They really enjoy playing with the inflatable toys along with their new friends and parents can relax as there are plenty of cushioned sunbeams, parasols and even a little grassy area. The pool is surrounded by beautiful gardens and on hot days the fig leaves smell wonderful.
Plenty of secure shaded parking in the courtyard.
We have lots of outdoor toys for small children including ride ons, rockers and a big sandpit.
We have baby foot, badminton, basket ball, football goal posts, a huge trampoline, slides, swings and a climbing frames and there is a decorated caravan in the meadow where older children from the ages of around 8 or 9 can hang out together chatting and playing games.
For older children and adults there are bikes to borrow free of charge and for very small people we have a couple of child bike seats and a Burley Bee pull along trailer.
We came to live in this area of South West France 25 years ago, partly for the sense of adventure and partly for the weather! We settled happily in to the French way of life in a nearby village, bringing up our young family and working and then had the chance to move to this amazing place, close to Cognac.
|Year property purchased||1999|
|Why this location?||This is a great location, not to far to reach in a day if you come by car and only an hour and a half from Bordeaux and La Rochelle airports.
We are in a peaceful little hamlet but only 10 minutes from historic Cognac and around an hour to the nearest beaches. being on the border of both the Charente and Charente Maritime departments there're so many activities and things to see for all ages in the area around that you won't have time to do them all.
|Unique benefits of property||Having brought up 5 children ourselves in this area of France and now with 5 grandchildren we really understand what families with young children are looking for when they come to France and we do our very best to make your holiday in one of our 3 on-site gites as easy and relaxing as possible while also providing fun and magical family memories.|
A lot of families find it really hard to drag themselves away from the pool, gardens, and play things here plus the all the lovely cycle tracks around the hamlet, but there are so many great things to see and do in the area that it would be a shame not to try one or 2 of them at least!
We have a regularly updated notice board and we're always happy to get more info for you, make reservations for restaurants etc.
Firstly of course there are numerous traditional Cognac Houses to visit...Henessey, Martell, etc plus smaller producers , like Le Cep Enchanté where the whole family can learn about the production of grape juice, wine and Cognac in a fun way.
Cognac town has lots of history, old cobbled streets and a wide selection of cafés and restaurants, bars and shops.
There are parks for children ranging from the carved wooden climbing frames in the Jardin Publique to the Base de Plein Air down by the river where as well as the usual swings etc there is an enclosure with huge inflatables accessed for a very small charge, mini golf, canoe and kayak rental and very pleasant woodland trails for walks. The Blues Passion Festival and La fete du Cognac are in July.
Within a 20 min drive there is a Prehistoric Theme Centre ( Paleosite) especially good for ages 6 to 16 and the Parc Aventure de Fontdouce much the same as 'Go Ape' with tree climbing runs for all ages from around 4 yrs to adult.
Small children will love steering their own boat at the Port Miniature in St Savinien where adults are only allowed to 'sail' if they are accompanied by a child!
Lots of wildlife at Zoo in La Palmyre and Zoodyssée in Chizé.
With easy access to the coast from here (under an hour) and a huge choice of wide sandy beaches backed by pine forests to small seaside resorts, you can combine a day out with a visit to the very pretty Talmont sur Gironde, the caves at Meschers, famous La Rochelle and Rochefort or even pop over to the islands of Ré and Oléron or Aix for the day.
We have just returned from a wonderful week at Logis La Cabane. There were 3 of us - me (45), my son (17) and my daughter (2). We stayed in La Libellule.
Put simply, I’ve been coming to France for years, and have stayed in many lovely places, but this is the best. The gîte itself is beautiful - spacious, very tastefully furnished and equipped with everything you could possibly need.
A great deal of thought has been put into giving guests a fun and relaxing experience. There are bikes - in a range of sizes, all in great condition and with helmets, child seats etc; table tennis; a trampoline; sand pit; jungle gym; swings; toys; children’s books and DVDs and a very clean, heated swimming pool. There is so much space for children to play in, it’s very safe and all surrounded by beautiful plants, fresh herbs. Cycling around the local lanes, we saw wild boar; deer; kites; a grass snake; a hare and storks.
We visited Cognac and Saintes - both delightful, we enjoyed the Otard tour in Cognac as we got to see a royal château as well as tasting and learning about the cognac! Saintes is a very pretty town, with Roman ruins and some nice shops and restaurants. We visited La Rochelle on the way home, which is magnificent.
The owners, Heather and Phillip are wonderful. They were so welcoming and generous with their hospitality and local knowledge, we felt immediately at home. We would thoroughly recommend La Libellule to anyone, we had a fantastic time. We hope to return.
