About this property

Rural Idyl with Heated Indoor Pool and Large Grounds. This cottage/gite is in a rural setting.

Created from an old French farm barn with exposed beams in the bedrooms, this is a new Gite, set within a farm courtyard in rural Charente in western France.
The indoor pool measures 9 meters x 4.5 meters and whilst the owners reserve the right to use it as they see fit, it is effectively for the exclusive use of the Gite guests. The safety of the pool in terms of health hazards is regularly checked via digital read out. The opening times of the pool are from 10.00am-8.00pm daily with the exception of Saturdays when it will not open in the morning. There is a toilet and a shower within the pool complex.
The Gite, in two hectares of grounds, is located near Ruffec which is half way between Poitiers (the Futuroscope amusement park is 45 minutes away) and Angouleme (Think: the cathedral and the round the ramparts race in September, 35 minutes).
The farm yard and Gite are surrounded on all sides by fields and woodland, providing ample opportunities for walking, biking and riding. There are over two hectares of grounds to explore including specimen trees, a walnut plantation (a different PYO option), some woodland and the further option to pick your own Nectarines or Peaches in season.
You could then have a quiet swim in the pool before lighting the covered bbq set in the private area in front of the Gite. Whilst waiting for the bbq to heat up you might have a quick game of table tennis or snooker in the other barn which is adjacent to the Gite.
There is also a small collection of vintage agricultural implements and tools to admire and think about.

About the Owner/Advertiser, Mr Peter Faith

My wife and I have worked internationally for some years and decided that there was more space available in France than UK. Our children have fled the nest so we can indulge ourselves and share some of that enjoyment with others in the French countryside. We are both "country people".

Year property purchased 2016
Why this location? We like being within striking distance of the coast (La Rochelle 90 minutes) and the properties in this area have more grounds to go with them - we have 2.2 hectares. We live in an old farmhouse which presents various architectural styles - some attractive: some less so! There is plenty of space - internally and externally - together with the open surrounding countryside. Ruffec also has a local farmer's market twice per week (Wednesday/Saturday).
Unique benefits of property The Gite is new in 2018. It faces south over the farm courtyard and the countryside beyond. It is spacious and with a good area in front which is private to the Gite. The heated swimming pool is across the courtyard within a barn. There is a Walnut plantation to wander through and wildlife to observe. The Gite is in easy driving distance to the nearest town of Ruffec (7 minutes) for all provisions as well as access to the Charente river for fishing and kayaking. Futuroscope in Poitiers is 45 minutes, the Vallee des Singes is about 20 minutes. Bordeaux may be reached in 90 minutes and is a great city in itself as well as being at the centre of the wine industry. Cognac has most of the well know distilleries which provide interesting tours and tastings. The Gite caters for all varieties of visitor - families, couples and at any time of year. Quietly stay in the Gite, enjoy the pool or a bbq at your leisure or visit some of the many attractions within easy driving distance.

The Owner Recommends

Futuroscope at Poitiers is world famous as a visitor attraction for famillies.

Allow a day and enjoy the many attractions

Le Vallee des Singes

The "valley of the monkeys" is aimed very much at families with children and has a good reputation

Fishing in the River Charente which is a top class river for trout and other fish

The Charente is well known for its fishing and is easily acessable from the Gite.

Kayaking on the River Charente

There is a Kayaking centre just outside Ruffec and this is a popular pursuit all the year round and depending upon one's ability.

Verteuil sur Charente is an "historic village"

This is some 15 minutes from the Gite and the site of a well known chateau which is still used by the founding family. There is a very picturesque view of the chateau with a weir on the river in front of it. There is also a good local café/bistro - La Portebleu which offers simple French and English fare at a reasonable price. Details from the owners. Beyond Verteuil is Nanteuil en Vallee which is another 15 minutes and also an "historic village". Here there are two good restaurants and some walking round the attractive houses and churches which make this small town. The owners will be pleased to advise.

Town of La Rochelle

There is much history about La Rochelle and the two towers which protect the old port are still intact and may be visited. The old port is attractive, especially on a sunny summer day. Take lunch overlooking the port or in one of the many good restaurants in the adjacent side streets. For families, La Rochelle is also famous for the recently renovated Aquarium. Allow a day, take your time and enjoy.

Bordeaux - the city.

There are two aspects of Bordeaux- the city itself and the surrounding Wine growing area. Wine enthusiasts will not need any further explanation! For the city, there is much to offer including outstanding architecture, fine cathedrals/basilica, shopping, the Gironde river and plenty of good restaurants. Make a day of it and take your time.

Cognac is about 35 minutes drive and has the distilleries of most of the well known producers all of which offer guided tours and the all important tasting afterwards.

Local Churches. There are a number of very old churches which are within an easy drive

Many examples of Roman style architecture exist in the area not least the Abbey at Saint-Amant-de-Boixe which is north of Angouleme and is well sign posted.
There is also the unusual troglodyte church at Aubeterre sur Dronne which is certainly worth a visit.
Remains of the 12th century Benedictine Abbey are visible in Nanteuil en Vallee and there is a newer 15th century version dominating the main square.

La Rochfoucould

This is a small town about 30 minutes south from the Gite. It has a chateau which is still occupied as a residence and which can be visited for a small fee. There is a good chocolatier close to the entrance whose products the owners can vouch for! There are also some old churches (13th century) in the town as well as some attractive half timbered houses - and coffee shops.

There are four gardens designated as "remarkable gardens". These are at: Bioussac - the Logis de Forge at Moutiers-sur-Boeme, Chaigne garden at Touzac and the medieval garden at Tusson. Anyone with the slightest interest in a garden should visit at least one of these formally designated remarkable gardens.

Ile de Re

This is an island just off La Rochelle and is renowned for its oysters and mussel farms. It is also scenic and with good restaurants - it is wise to book for the better known restaurants. Access to the Island is via the toll bridge. Also visit the old lighthouse.

Le Chateau des Enigmes at Pons in Charente Maritime

A good day out for the family - fun and educational within a renaissance Italian Chateau. Little farm and a journey adventure around the grounds - 27 activities.

The Charente Lakes

There are two large lakes which allow water skiing, boating and just relaxing by the water. Hiking and horse riding is also available and there is an adventure park which offers zip lining, bungee jumping and adventure courses.
