About the Owner/Advertiser, Mr Michael Hildersley

We moved to France in May 2015 after 4 years of trying to make the move a reality. We both wanted to find a place where we could achieve a good work life balance. Moving here has allowed us to achieve that dream. We have settled quickly and are fully immersing ourselves into the French way of life. We are now living our dream.

Year property purchased 2015
Why this location? We had researched the area over a 4 year period and just fell in love with the Charente region. In particular where we are, as we are only 45 min from the coast and La Rochelle which is a beautiful coastal town. The beaches which stretch on past Royan are stunning and the coastal road is just amazing. There are zoos, aquarium, the green Venice, pretty towns and villages. There is just so much to see and explore. Big open skies, lovely countryside and fabulous weather, what more could you want?
Unique benefits of property Location, close to the coast, close amenities, perfectly positioned to visit tourist attractions yet set in open countryside where you can just relax and enjoy peace and quiet listening to the birds. There is a 12 x 6 meter heated swimming pool which is amazing. It looks out onto open countryside and sunflowers. Simply stunning. Our holiday gites offer high quality accommodation in a perfect location for this area of France. Our guests absolutely love it here and are often amazed by the site and what it has to offer. We pride ourselves on making sure you have a holiday you will remember for all the right reasons.
All our land is fenced for children's safety so when the front gates are closed, they can run and play without the parents having to worry.

The Owner Recommends

Royan zoo La Palmyre

This is the most amazing zoo you will ever go to. It is immaculately kept the animal enclosures are lovely. You get extremely close to the animals and can feed the giraffes, zebras and elephants as well as being able to touch the rhinos. It really is a breath taking experience and one not to be missed. We had guests last year who watch flamingoes hatching out of eggs. Just over an hour away.

La Rochelle

An iconic city and probably the most famous in the region. It is a stunning and vibrant coastal city with so much to offer. A beautiful harbour, large Aquarium, great shopping, bars and restaurants. Lots of street entertainment in the summer season and a place not to be missed. It really has a lovely feel to it. Great to visit in the evening too. 45 mins drive away.

Ile de Re

A small island just off La Rochelle accessed by a large flyover bridge. This is a hidden treasure and a stunning island where many Parisians have holiday homes. It has fabulous beaches and pretty villages. St Martin is one of my favourite places to visit on the island. From the top of the church Tower you have fantastic views of the harbour and endless sea views. 10 mins from La Rochelle. Direct from us about 50 mins.

Ile de Aix

This is a smaller island only reachable by boat from Fouras, La Rochelle and a couple of other places. The island is mainly pedestrianised and again has a great beach lots of cycling tracks and walks. You could probably walk the whole island in a couple of hours. Great for families who just want cycle without having to worry about cars etc. There are lots of places on the island to hire bikes for all ages. Also restaurants and bars etc.

Fouras

This is a place we really like with a great beach, large fort, sea front bars and restaurants. A cute little town with a lovely feel to it. Only 15 mins away from La Rochelle.

Saintes

A beautiful French city with a stunning cathedral, river and beautiful buildings. The first Monday of every month it has the most amazing market that stretches the whole length of the Main Street and for produce, plants and chickens etc that spreads over the other side of the river. There is also a well preserved amphitheater which is well worth a visit. 30 mins away from us.

St Jean d'Angely

This is our local town and again a beautiful little town with so much character and appeal. It has a market on a Saturday and Wednesday. Lots of historical buildings, shops, bars and restaurants. A cute and excellent vegetarian restaurant. A number of large hyper markets. It is about 8 miles from us.

Niort

Another stunning city with so much to do. Guarded by serpent dragons it has a beautifully presented centre with shops, bars and restaurants. There is a very large chateau and in the centre green area in the summer they have a water fountain play area for children which is free. Jets of water appear from the ground and overhead sprays at intervals and children are just blown away by it. There is also a little play area small telly tubby land we call it which again is free. There is a large outdoor karting circuit on the outskirts of Niort which is popular with some visitors.

Coulon ( Marais Poitevin )

This is an area called the Marais Poitevin also referred too as the green Venice. It is a large area north of Niort which is a matrix of waterways through natural countryside. The Marais Poitevin is the largest of the three areas of Marais (marshlands) in the Vendée. The Marais are what is left of the ancient Gulf of Pictons a large basin that was scoured out during the last ice age and which has since slowly been silted up by alluvial deposits left by the local rivers and the Loire. During the Roman period at least 10 rivers drained into the gulf, but today just the Sèvre Niortaise, the Cure and the Lay have Atlantic estuaries. During the early medieval period drainage of the Marais was started by the Benedictine monks, the Dutch were brought in later to continue the drainage work and built the Drogues (dykes) to keep the sea at bay. Monks from the Abbey at Maillezais, which was built in 1005 on the site of a ruined chapel, together with monks from the Abbeys of St. Michel-en-Herm, Nieul-sur-l'Autise, l'Absie and St. Maixant were responsible for all of the early drainage work. The Monks had great skill as is evident by the construction of the aqueduct at Maille, which was built between 1654 and 1662 following the completion of drainage work on the marshes around Vix. Coulon is a pretty little village to explore from and is 22 miles away.

Ile d Oleron

Another island off the coast south of Ile de Re. It is larger than Ile de Re but has a totally different feel. Again lots to explore. Feels a little more spread out than Ile de Re but again certainly worth a visit. Île d'Oléron is an island off the west coast of France. It’s joined to the mainland by a bridge and is crisscrossed by cycle paths. It features pine forests, dunes and sandy beaches such as La Brée-les-Bains. Fishing ports fringe the island, such as the busy La Cotinière in the major town of Saint-Pierre d'Oléron. ringe the island, such as the busy La Cotinière in the major town of Saint-Pierre d'Oléron. Le Château d'Oléron, a town known for its oysters, is home to La Citadelle, a huge waterfront fortress.

St Savirien

This again is a little town with the Charente river running through it. Just over the bridge on the right is a place called Port Miniture. It is a lake with a waterway circuit which has lots of replica ships that adults and children can steer around. They are electric boats and are great fun. The kids will absolutely love it. Next to the lake is also an inflatable children's play park with a number of large inflatables for the children to bounce around on and climb over. Adults can just go in and sit on the chairs while the children wear themselves out. There is a restaurant and a snack / drinks bar there too for refreshments. Up on the hill is a lovely church with a wave of stone monks in hooded robes outside it. Well worth a look.

Talmont

Talmont is 15 kilometres south of Royan, Talmont sits on a rocky peak overlooking the Gironde estuary ; it still has its original layout as a "bastide", built in 1284 by Edward I Duke of Aquitaine. Towering above the village, the magnificent church of Sainte Radegonde, symbol of the Poitou-Charentes region, is still protected by ramparts. In the village, whitewashed houses and blue shutters peep out behind hollyhocks. It has quaint little cobbled streets and little craft shops, but it is the atmosphere created on a Tuesday evening that is worth going to see. When it gets dark the inhabitants line all the little streets with tea lights, candles and lanterns. There is also music playing and just a really nice atmosphere. There are a few restaurants there too. In the main summer season they also do a light show to music on the church later in the evening.

10 / 10 Treloar Family 1 July, 2016

This is our second stay at Les Tournesols. We generally don't return to the same location but this holiday destination is so lovely. We have children age 10-15. They love coming here and have asked to return again as they feel so at home.
The owners couldn't do more for you. They are on hand all the time to offer help and advice if required. Customer service is second to none.
The facilities are wonderful. The Gite itself it homely, clean and very comfortable. The linen is so fresh and clean, the best we have experienced.
Set in a quiet and peaceful location but within easy reach of a number of attractions, towns etc. Not too far from the coast.
Rohan Zoo, Saintes, La Rochelle, the list of activities and attractions is endless
So much to do in this region, hence we returned within a year.
Would thoroughly recommend a stay here and have recommended to a number of friends. You would be hard pushed to find better accommodation or better hosts.
