Hundreds (literally) of cognac and pineau producers to choose from in the area. Tasting is free and you can choose your favourite to take home. Pineau is grape juice with eau de vie added and then matured in barrels for no less than 18 months.
Beaches are 50-70 minutes drive away and provide a wonderful day out.

Marennes and Ile d'Oleron - the centre of the oyster and mussel culture. Best seafood found at Fouras - go to the fish market, armed with a tray from the bar opposite the market and order your oysters to be opened from one of the stalls, buy your shrimps, prawns, whelks, winkles, crab and langoustines ready to eat and the bar will provide the lemon, butter bread and your drinks - all at a fraction of the cost at a restaurant.
The first Monday in the month is the enormous street market in Saintes. The 27th of each month is the very large market in Rouillac, including livestock The first Friday in the months sees the market/fair in Matha.
We have been going back to La Maison des Grands Bambous since we first stayed there nearly ten years ago. Louzignac is very quiet but situated really well for many places of interest (Cognac Houses, Romain Amphitheatre at Saintes, the river Charente, Angouleme and it is less than an hour to the beaches near la Rochelle).
Sally and Peter are always very welcoming and we get on really well. Oleander, our favourite, is one of three superbly appointed gites. We go for a holiday so take the opportunity to have B+B plus the sumptuous evening meals prepared by Sally and eaten with our hosts. My wife and I have been as a couple, with our grown up children and with our daughter and grandson. I even stayed with friends for a few days to play the local golf courses. Every stay was superb.
The advert described the accommodation accurately. It was clean, well maintained, comfortable and excellent for our needs. Whilst close local amenities ( restaurants, shops etc ) are somewhat sparse
we were very happy with being in a small hamlet surrounded by vineyards and fields. It was a pleasure to be able to stroll around without fear of traffic Close local towns supplied all we needed. Cognac and St jean d'Angelies are easily accessible and have good restaurants. The monthly market at Rouillac is astonishing.
Sally and Peter are very helpful and excellent hosts. They provided very accurate directions to find the house. The wonderful grounds and gardens more than compensated for sparse amenities locally and, with the fine swimming pool, there would be ample to occupy young children.
This was our second visit and we would have no hesitation in recommending it to others. in fact we have suggested it to our two sons both of whom have young children
We have stayed in Oleander cottage before and found it perfect for our needs. The enclosed terrace, complete with barbecue, is ideal for al fresco eating and lounging. The heated swimming pool, together with umbrellas and loungers, is very inviting. There is also a jacuzzi.
If requested or at certain times, the owners will provide a delicious barbecue in the pool area. Excellent evening meals, with wine, can be requested. Both at a very reasonable rate.
There is a boulangerie in the village and an Intermarche as well as other shops in Matha.
We used two restaurants near to the gite quite different but equally enjoyable. Particulars in gite together with information of places to visit and activities available.
The area is agricultural mainly given over to vinyards mostly producing cognac and pineau. These blend well with fields of cereals and dazzling sunflowers in July.
