The homes of the international cognac houses - Hennessy, Remy Martin, Martell Otard and Courvoisier, plus many other less well known brands.
Hundreds (literally) of cognac and pineau producers to choose from in the area. Tasting is free and you can choose your favourite to take home. Pineau is grape juice with eau de vie added and then matured in barrels for no less than 18 months.
Beaches are 50-70 minutes drive away and provide a wonderful day out.
A visit is not to be missed for history, the aquarium, excellent restaurants, boat trips to Fort Boyard and Ile d'Aix
A choice of local family run restaurants within 2km to Michelin starred restaurants 20 mins drive away. Also see our website for independent reviews of our table d'hote dining.
Marennes and Ile d'Oleron - the centre of the oyster and mussel culture. Best seafood found at Fouras - go to the fish market, armed with a tray from the bar opposite the market and order your oysters to be opened from one of the stalls, buy your shrimps, prawns, whelks, winkles, crab and langoustines ready to eat and the bar will provide the lemon, butter bread and your drinks - all at a fraction of the cost at a restaurant.
The first Monday in the month is the enormous street market in Saintes. The 27th of each month is the very large market in Rouillac, including livestock The first Friday in the months sees the market/fair in Matha.
The hosts, Sally and Peter, make you feel very welcome from the moment you arrive, and remain on hand for advice and assistance whenever needed (which isn't much, since the gites are extremely well equipped).
Our kids loved the pool, and we made use of the communal barbecue area on a few occasions, plus took advantage of the bikes that are available to take out among the gentle undulations of the surrounding countryside.
Our children were 10 and 12 at the time of travel, and we found plenty to do in the area. In particular, we'd recommend Chateau des Enigmes, a themed quiz trail in the grounds of a chateau, and the high ropes course at Abbaye de le Fontdouce. Of the local towns, we enjoyed Saintes - the walk up to the amphitheatre is worth it. We also stopped off for a night at Futuroscope, at Poitiers, which was excellent and helped break the journey on the way back to Caen.
There's no bakery or bar/restaurant in the village, so it's a car trip for morning croissants or an evening meal, and the two neighbouring gites don't have particularly private patio areas, but these are very minor issues with a holiday that all four of us thoroughly enjoyed. We have no hesitation in recommending this to others.
Our fourth year at Bamboo Grove and as always a great holiday was had by all.
If you want a "chill out holiday" with many amenities within a short drive we would highly recommend this venue.
Our first visit to this area of France and we were not disappointed. Bamboo Grove was the ideal base from which to explore the area, returning every afternoon to sit beside the swimming pool and to relax in the lovely warm water.
The proprietors Sally & Peter were perfect hosts, always in the background but there if needed. We joined them twice in their house for an evening meal of good food, wine and company.
The gite was well equipped and clean and with UK TV.
We enjoyed our visits to COGNAC, ANGOULEME and the markets ( Sally will tell you when) at AULNAY and St-JEAN-d'ANGLEY
Had a great time.....gite very clean and comfortable, poole and hot tub great too.
