We are teachers in Oxford with two young children and a Spaniel. Our French home is our holiday home which we also let.
|Year property purchased||2004|
|Why this location?||We wanted somewhere peaceful above all - a place to recharge and regroup and escape the business of life in England. We wanted an unspoilt rural landscape - vines, crops and rolling hills. We wanted the house to be secluded and have a remote feel with no passing traffic, but equally within striking distance of a biggish town. We wanted somewhere far enough south to have a 'South of France' climate, but not too far so that journeys from the ferry only took a few hours. We also wanted to be near to the coast. We found the perfect place, and spent 4 years renovating the simple farmhouse and adjoining barn into a wonderful family home with warmth and rustic charm. We have a small garden with vegetables, fruit and flowers, and acres of countryside on our doorstep. We simply love it - and hope that you will find it equally idyllic and as much of a retreat as we do.|
|Unique benefits of property||The immediate environment - you have the sense of being remote and isolated at the end of 'Impasse de la Fontaine', and quickly forget there are a dozen other properties in the hamlet (including the delightful next door neighbour and the chickens!).
Use of space - large open-plan living areas but also separate rooms and areas to allow families time together and apart.
Quality - of the renovation and standard of living it affords
Creature comforts - dvd projector, kitchen equipment for the serious cook.
Individual touches - cookbooks, toys, games, bookshelves stacked with a wide variety of material, dvds etc. are all left out for guests to enjoy.
We also respond quickly to any query you may have, either before booking or while you are there, to help ensure you have a wonderful time.
Cognac is 10 minutes by car, with supermarkets and all conveniences. The town has many boutiques, restaurants and brasserie bars, a lively centre with terraced bars and a lovely old quarter with medieval castle and bridges crossing the Charente. There are stunning jardins publics to visit, the famous covered market, and canoe and boat hire along the river. Every summer, Cognac hosts a world-famous Blues festival as well as the festival of Cognac (the drink) in July. The golf course is one of the finest in the area, and visitors are welcome throughout the year. If you would like to visit a cognac distillery for a tour, then Rémy Martin is nearest on the outskirts of Cognac, or Hennessy is in the heart of the old quarter of town. The other firms all offer similar visits, in English, and usually include tastings. Courvoisier is a short drive away in Jarnac, a beautiful town on the banks of the Charente.
The medieval town of Pons is just 15 minutes away. There is a super, quick restaurant with two play grounds, mini golf and canoe/pedalo hire on the river (summer only). Also in Pons, there is the excellent Chateau des Enigmes 'puzzle castle' with games in English and French. As well as a supermarket and lovely winding streets, the 12th century castle and Romanesque church are both well worth visiting. Saintes is a wonderful old Roman town, with triumphal arch and amphitheatre still intact, some 30 minutes from Larceau. Nearby is the excellent prehistoric centre Paleosite, and if you fancy beauty treatment or fun in an indoor water park, try Les Antilles de Jonzac, 20 minutes away. Angoulême is famous for its cartoon festival as well as a beautiful old quarter, and is a 40 minute drive. A little further afield, 1½ hours by car, are Bordeaux and La Rochelle. Both cities offer many opportunities for shopping, wine tasting, boat trips, fine dining and culture. Poitiers is slightly further away, but well within reach for a visit to the famous Futuroscope centre. If a day on the beach is what you fancy, then there are many options to choose from. Although not quite the nearest, Chataillion-Plage has miles of sandy beaches and sea-front restaurants. For family days out, Meschers Plage des Vernes (45 minutes) is a great, safe beach, with snack bars, toilets at each end and summer Lifeguarding. The islands of Ile-de-Ré and Ile d'Oléron are also fantastic family venues, as well as the more popular seaside town of Royan - 45 minutes away.
St Malo - 458km Caen - 544km.
L'Orchidee, Perignac, 7km. Various, Cognac, 10km.
Enjoyed the property very much indeed. Everything we expected and more. The standard of the household equipment was very good. Watched dvds on the projector every night, just like going to the cinema. The swimming pool was very welcome as the temperature hit 37c . Would absolutely recommend John and Sarah house to anyone thinking of staying in the Cognac area. No hesitation in returning to the property, hopefully next year.
A lovely house in the heart of Cognac country. It is a house that is well looked after and caters for all eventualities in terms of entertainment, cooking, detailed information on how to work the facilities as well as get the most out of the local shops, restaurants as well as activities. The hosts/owners are obviously generous people who want you to share in their enthusiasm for a fascinating, pecful and unspolit pocket of France. As an Artist I have some unfinished business in the area and so need to set up in front of some amazing views that I just did not have time to do justice to. It wil be perfect for the family so m sure will return with them.
Cognac retreat is a lovely, realxed place to stay. It provides everything needed and has the feel of a well-loved family home. We were warmly greeted with local wine and the owner was a pleasure to deal with. The house itself was a great place to relax and the garden, stocked with an abundance of fruit and vegetables, offers a tranquil space to eat, unwind and play.
The children (9 and 5yrs) loved the pool and were happy to spend long days in the house and garden.
The house was clean and generally well maintained. The beds were a little uncomfortable.
The house is well placed to explore Cognac and the surrounding towns and villages. However, we found the house and garden so inviting that we spent much of the time relaxing there. I would highly recommned Cognac Retreat and will hopefully return soon.
Very peaceful setting set the scene for a relaxing holiday. Fabulous walks right from the door and excellent for cycling too. House offered some super cool respite for our dog on a couple of the hotter days. John was really helpful in offering tips on good walks, places to go and always responded promptly to any questions we had. Thank you .
