Every Wednesday and Saturday in Pons
Ancient city on the River Charente with plenty to see including the Roman amphitheatre, Roman arch, Abbey and Basilica. Good choice of restaurants and shops and a lovely place for an evening stroll.
Both villages are listed as 'Les Plus Beaux Villages de France'
Fantastic family day out
The gite was accurately described and we liked it very much, including its village location in beautiful rolling countryside. The property was clean and well-maintained, in fact it seemed quite newly converted to its current use. We did have to contend with a leak in the roof for a few days when it rained, but this was easy enough to deal with.
The kitchen/living area was very spacious and well equipped. A bit more lighting near the sink would have helped.
The back patio was a lovely sun-trap, and the laden fig tree was out of this world.
We had a good meal at La Rustica in the village, and enjoyed both the restaurants next to the old fort/dungeon near the centre of Pons. This very attractive square includes a car park.
We had a wonderful day out on the Ile d'Oleron, which I would certainly recommend. Another good outing was a visit to the Martell Cognac distillery in nearby Cognac.
We went twice to the coastal town of Royan and were very taken with its fascinating architecture and accessible seafront with numerous shops and restaurants, and on-street parking.
Our food shopping was done at Le Clerk's and Intermarche, on the outskirts of Pons, both of which were excellent.
We had a look at the Wednesday market in Pons but as mentioned in the literature provided, it was not very large and was mostly indoors.
The owner of this gite was a pleasure to communicate with before, during and after the holiday. We would certainly recommend it.
This is our second time to this gite. We asked for sunloungers last year and they were provided for this year. It was great. Spent more time relaxing in the garden. Beautiful location, so peaceful. La Rustica restaurant in the village is amazing. The medieval town of Pons is great. We went to the DonJon cafe every evening where the staff were very friendly. Will be coming back again next year.
quiet location, spacious gite, safe storage for bikes
more lighting above worktops would have been great, a long drive (40 mins) to the beach
Very good shower. Cooking facilities very good. Location fantastic.
Not really a bad point but sun loungers would have been good as the weather was so hot.
