|Why this location?||We are on the edge of a charming village in 'real' France, in the picturesque countryside of the Charente Maritime. Yet we are only just over 10 minutes from local towns (Cognac and Pons) with all local amenties. We are quite close to an arterial motorway (the A10), just over an hour from local airports (La Rochelle and Bordeaux) and we enjoy a micro-climate which gives us the second best sunny weather, after the Mediterranean area. Cognac also acts as a real magnet for holiday-makers (of all nationalities) and business people alike.|
|Unique benefits of property||We have converted our gites (and B&B) to a high standard and they are all well equipped. Our properties display a 'winning' blend of authentic features (lots of honey-coloured charentaise stone and old oak beams) with contemporary amenities, like double-glazing, good insulation, large furnished patios (with bbqs) and wi-fi in every gite. Our guests share exclusive use of our 5 acre field, a large swimming pool, a boule court, a gym, table tennis, a volleyball/badminton court, a football pitch - and we even have bike hire! Our rural setting is beautiful and restful - a real family-friendly oasis and antidote to the stresses and strains of busy, modern working life. Our local area is great for walking, cycling and enjoying the 'simple' pleasures in life.|
Every town and village hosts a Brocante throughout the summer - these are an enjoyable mixture of car boot sales, local village fairs, where you can pick up a bargain, buy local produce and eat alfresco!
Cognac has a huge open air swimming pool and play park. There are lots of cafes and boutique shops. Do not miss the world famous distillery tours - Hennessy, Otard, Remy Martin, Martel Camus and in Jarnac Courvoisier. Visit a more local, intimate distillerie to the beautiful ancient town of Pons and Saintes.
Canoes can be hired at nearby Dompierre, Cognac and Pons. The Chateau des Enigmes near Pons and the Paleosite (near Saintes) make wonderful days out for children. Adults may prefer a trip to the beautiful village of Aubeterre sur Dronne (now officially recognised as one of France's prettiest villages) or Oradour sur Glane to visit the World War II martyrs' village and memorial. The beautiful beaches of St George-de- Didonne and St Palais-sur-Mer are a 30 minute drive away. La Palmyre Zoo (one of the biggest zoos in Europe with over 1600 animals to delight all the family) is about an hour's drive.
We live in a quiet hamlet (Les Morinauds) on the edge of the pretty village of Brives sur Charente (45 40 03 N 0 27 13 W) in the 'Petite Champagne' near Cognac. The next village is only 2 miles away. Our secluded, rural setting is perfect for walking, cycling and generally getting away from it all for the whole family. There are many marvellous marked walks and cycleways commencing at Brives sur Charente and our surrounding villages. Maps and guidebooks in the gites.
Weekly local markets are held in Cognac, Pons and Saintes. The produce is fabulously fresh, the selection of locally caught fish is outstanding and the cheeses are simply delicious. Supermarkets can be found in Cognac, Pons and Saintes. You will find local shops in Salignac, Perignac, Dompierre and Rouffiac.
There are a multitude of local restaurants and bars all within an easy drive. Some are (luckily) only about 15 minutes by bike.
Golf at Cognac, Saints and Angouleme. Tennis at Rouffiac or Ars. Swimming (indoor and out) Cognac and Saintes. Sea swimming the Charente coast. Canoeing: Charente, Dompierre, Cognac, Seugne (Pons), coast. Fishing, rivers and coast. Aquatic centre (pools, gym, sauna and massage): Jonzac (Les Antilles) and St Jean D'Angely (Atlantys).
Post Office at Brives sur Charente. Cash Points at Chaniers and all local supermarkets. Banks at Cognac and Pons. Dentist and Hospital at Cognac.
We highly recommend a stay at Gites de Brives. My husband, two boys (3 and 1 yr old) and I stayed for seven nights in Phil and Glyn's wonderful La Grange gite. The gite was very well equipped (even including a blender to mash up baby food), and we were also provided with a stairgate, highchair, cot and paddling pool which made it very easy with the kids. We arrived in desperate need of rest and relaxation and we got everything we needed from our stay. The gites are super quiet and dark at night, with very comfortable beds so we all slept very well. The pool was lovely and made for a very refreshing dip on a hot day. The whole site was great (and very safe) for our 3 yr old to run around in and burn off some energy. We spent a lot of time relaxing around the site but also had great trips out to La Palmyre (beautiful beach, very suitable for little children and great, safe cycle tracks) and La Rochelle (lovely harbour front, with a brilliant kids playground and a wonderful aquarium). We also did a tour of the Remy Martin site very nearby which we loved (not sure the kids were so bothered...). Phil and Glyn are fantastic hosts and were extremely helpful. They manage to strike a perfect balance between being there when you need them but not being intrusive at all!
We stayed at La Grange, Gites de Brives for a week in August 2016 and recommend it to anyone looking for top quality accommodation in a beautiful, relaxing setting.
The Gite is spacious, comfortable, spotlessly clean, very well equipped and well maintained. The pool and outside areas and facilities are also to the same high standard.
Phil and Glyn, the owners, were helpful and friendly, but never intrusive, and were able to recommend places to visit and activities. The additional touches that they provided, such a small welcome box of groceries, and bringing tomatoes for us from their garden, were thoughtful and kind, and made us feel very welcome.
We liked that we could spend time at the Gite and take advantage of using the pool, gym, table tennis or other activities there, or we could very quickly reach the beach or one of the local towns if we wanted to explore. We especially enjoyed hiring the bicycles available and cycling around the neighbouring villages.
You will come away from a stay there feeling refreshed, and, like us, planning when you will be able to visit again.
Just back from our fourth stay at La Grange. As always the Gite and all facilities were pristine and Phil & Glyn were warm and welcoming.
The Gite is fully equipped with everything you could need for your stay, including English TV channels. Bikes are available for hire and the relatively flat landscape is perfect for cycling around.
Gites de Brives is a little slice of heaven in a truly beautiful part of France. When we weren't enjoying the sun terrace and beautifully kept pool we went sightseeing in places such as Cognac, Jarnac, Pons and Talmont. We went kayaking on the Charente and had a tour of the Otard Cognac house.
The fact that we are planning our FIFTH visit to Gites de Brives surely says it all!
Gosh! It is always a pleasure to welcome Clare, Tony, Pippa and Ben (accompanied by Simon and Clare - for the first week, this year!). We cannot believe the last four years have gone so quickly...! Many, many thanks. See you next year!
Gites de Brives is an excellent group of gites and chambre d'hotes, with a lovely pool and leisure facilities. If you are a nature lover there are large grounds which have deer, hares, various woodpecker species, redstarts, partridges, kites and nearby there are red squirrels and lots of other species. The owners have created a lovely wild flower meadow which has lots of butterflies and attracts birds. In adjacent fields there are sunflowers and vines. All makes this a fantastic holiday location.
The owners are very responsive and available and will help you in any way they can. Highly recommended.
Nearby are many relaxing restaurants as well as the town of Cognac with it's obvious attractions.
We stayed for four weeks and had only one day of rain, blue skies and warm temperatures seem to be the norm in summer.
