Luxury Family-Friendly Gites with a Large Pool. This cottage/gite is in a village setting.

We live surrounded by vineyards, sunflowers and swathes of wild flowers in the pretty village of Brives sur Charente, bordering the majestic Charente. Our luxury, family-friendly gites are 10 mins from Cognac, sharing exclusive use of a large swimming pool, children's play area, boule court, volley-ball/badminton court, table-tennis, football goal and gym in 6 acres. For the really energetic we can offer bicycle hire. Enjoy!

Share the tranquillity and the wonderful climate of the Charente Maritime - relax in an idyllic setting in Poitou-Charentes. Our luxury family-friendly gites and chambres d'hôtes are near Cognac in the heart of the 'Petite Champagne', the grape growing region that produces the world renowned Cognac brandy and the local aperitif, pineau. Our gites are professionally managed by resident owners. Our 4 spacious gites have been sympathetically restored and furnished to a high standard, blending contemporary with traditional features (with beautiful, old oak beams and honey-coloured stone).

Le Figuier is a  lovely 2 storey gite (100M2) with 2 bedrooms, lots of living space and 2 toilets, in a converted charentaise barn. All our luxury, family-friendly gites have a flat screen satellite tv, dvd, stereo, microwave, cooker, washing machine, dishwasher together with a private patio (plus furniture and sunloungers) and bbq for dining al fresco. All our luxury, family-friendly gites have particularly well equipped, modern kitchens. We provide Egyptian cotton bedlinen and towels (not beach or swimming pool towels). Gites are cleaned weekly. Cots, highchairs and stairgates are available at no cost. All of our gites have a high speed broadband connexion and fast/free wi-fi. We have a large selection of bicycles available for hire. Should guests want to taste some delicious home-cooked meals, 'washed' down with good local wine and followed by pineau or cognac, then dining in our B&B or table d'hôte is also an option!

There is a mouth-watering choice of places to visit locally (the beautiful beaches of the Cote Sauvage, Royan, la Rochelle, Cognac, Pons, Saintes, Angouleme, Aubeterre, Oradour, Bordeaux, La Palmyre Zoo and sleepy villages) and a host of activities, including walking, cycling, fishing, canoeing, horse-riding, golf, tennis, swimming and surfing. You can enjoy a relaxing walk or cycle ride to the nearby village for your breakfast croissants or bread. Or - if you are feeling lazy, wait for the daily boulangerie van to sound its 'klaxon' and buy your fresh croissants/bread!

If you have a large party to accommodate please see our 3 other gites (la Grange adjacent to le Figuier, le Marronnier or le Studio) or talk to us about our B&B accommodation. We hope you will choose Gites de Brives to savour what France has to offer the discerning visitor.  Come and make memories....

Year property purchased 2003
Why this location? We are on the edge of a charming village in 'real' France, in the picturesque countryside of the Charente Maritime. Yet we are only just over 10 minutes from local towns (Cognac and Pons) with all local amenties. We are quite close to an arterial motorway (the A10), just over an hour from local airports (La Rochelle and Bordeaux) and we enjoy a micro-climate which gives us the second best sunny weather, after the Mediterranean area. Cognac also acts as a real magnet for holiday-makers (of all nationalities) and business people alike.
Unique benefits of property We have converted our gites (and B&B) to a high standard and they are all well equipped. Our properties display a 'winning' blend of authentic features (lots of honey-coloured charentaise stone and old oak beams) with contemporary amenities, like double-glazing, good insulation, large furnished patios (with bbqs) and wi-fi in every gite. Our guests share exclusive use of our 5 acre field, a large swimming pool, a boule court, a gym, table tennis, a volleyball/badminton court, a football pitch - and we even have bike hire! Our rural setting is beautiful and restful - a real family-friendly oasis and antidote to the stresses and strains of busy, modern working life. Our local area is great for walking, cycling and enjoying the 'simple' pleasures in life.

The Owner Recommends

Brocantes

Every town and village hosts a Brocante throughout the summer - these are an enjoyable mixture of car boot sales, local village fairs, where you can pick up a bargain, buy local produce and eat alfresco!

Cognac

Cognac has a huge open air swimming pool and play park. There are lots of cafes and boutique shops. Do not miss the world famous distillery tours - Hennessy, Otard, Remy Martin, Martel Camus and in Jarnac Courvoisier. Visit a more local, intimate distillerie to the beautiful ancient town of Pons and Saintes.

Days Out for the Whole Family

Canoes can be hired at nearby Dompierre, Cognac and Pons. The Chateau des Enigmes near Pons and the Paleosite (near Saintes) make wonderful days out for children. Adults may prefer a trip to the beautiful village of Aubeterre sur Dronne (now officially recognised as one of France's prettiest villages) or Oradour sur Glane to visit the World War II martyrs' village and memorial. The beautiful beaches of St George-de- Didonne and St Palais-sur-Mer are a 30 minute drive away. La Palmyre Zoo (one of the biggest zoos in Europe with over 1600 animals to delight all the family) is about an hour's drive.

Locally

We live in a quiet hamlet (Les Morinauds) on the edge of the pretty village of Brives sur Charente (45 40 03 N 0 27 13 W) in the 'Petite Champagne' near Cognac. The next village is only 2 miles away. Our secluded, rural setting is perfect for walking, cycling and generally getting away from it all for the whole family. There are many marvellous marked walks and cycleways commencing at Brives sur Charente and our surrounding villages. Maps and guidebooks in the gites.

Markets, Supermarkets and Local Shops

Weekly local markets are held in Cognac, Pons and Saintes. The produce is fabulously fresh, the selection of locally caught fish is outstanding and the cheeses are simply delicious. Supermarkets can be found in Cognac, Pons and Saintes. You will find local shops in Salignac, Perignac, Dompierre and Rouffiac.

Restaurants and Bars

There are a multitude of local restaurants and bars all within an easy drive. Some are (luckily) only about 15 minutes by bike.

Sports

Golf at Cognac, Saints and Angouleme. Tennis at Rouffiac or Ars. Swimming (indoor and out) Cognac and Saintes. Sea swimming the Charente coast. Canoeing: Charente, Dompierre, Cognac, Seugne (Pons), coast. Fishing, rivers and coast. Aquatic centre (pools, gym, sauna and massage): Jonzac (Les Antilles) and St Jean D'Angely (Atlantys).

The Necessary Bits

Post Office at Brives sur Charente. Cash Points at Chaniers and all local supermarkets. Banks at Cognac and Pons. Dentist and Hospital at Cognac.

We stayed for a total of 11 days, one night B&B, a week in Le Figuier, and a further three nights in the B&B with our daughters aged 19 and 17. We had a wonderful time and Phil and Glyn were the perfect hosts. The gite is really lovely, spotlessly clean and very well equipped. A welcome pack with all the essentials is a nice touch and it's great to walk into a place with things like soap, toilet rolls and washing up liquid all there. The rooms are spacious and airy and the outside patio area has everything you need to relax. We made good use of the pool, which was also beautifully clean, and the table tennis table.

There are some lovely places to visit and we had fun looking round Pons, Saintes and Cognac including kayaking on the Charente. We also made use of the bikes and explored the lovely countryside. We had a puncture in Pons and searched in vain for a bike repair shop but we didn't need to worry as Phil came straight out with a replacement bike.

Phil and Glyn were great. They were available to give us as much information and help as we wanted.

I only rated local amenities down because we were in a small village without shops, restaurants etc but we knew that before we came and there was plenty within driving distance.

If you are intending to visit this lovely part of France, I would not hesitate to recommend Gites de Brives.

We found the whole setup at Gites de brives to be really excellent - large open area for the kids to explore and play, great good sized pool and a really nice local area being secluded and yet close enough to get to the coast in a fairly short drive and nice towns to shop at or visit nearby.
The host, Phil and Glyn, were brilliant from the initial enquiry via email through to providing any advice or help needed whilst we were staying at the Gite. They seemed to strike a good balance between being around when you needed them or to say hello and chat whilst providing privacy and allowing you to 'get on with' your holiday.
The gite we rented was called 'La Figuerer' which had two bedrooms and a nice outside area with barbeque. It was well equipped, very clean and some nice features inside. It easily accommodated our 3 kids in the one big bedroom with us in the other double bedroom next door. Little touches like having the mosquito nets / grid on all windows so you could leave them open at night without worrying about insects (not that there seemed to be many around) were good as was having a great little welcome box with wine and bread and pasta and things was really appreciated after a long drive. We also both commented on the fact that it was nice to have a lot of the basics provided such as bin bags, toilet rolls and coffee and tea. I'd really reconmend Gites de Brives to others.

Stunning holiday. We wanted a relaxing holiday to unwind and this certainly exceeded all our expectations.
The owners Phil & Glyn were very welcoming, we stayed in Le Figuer (6 person) gite and this was perfect for our family requirements. Spotless and spacious.
The amenities were perfect and kept our 16 year old boys entertained. The swimming pool was amazing, the perfect size and very clean. Plenty of loungers around the pool. Table tennis, badminton, football and bowls and acres of land to explore.
Cannot find any reason to be negative about Gites de Brives, only the fact that we should have booked a second week.!!

Owner response

It is always a pleasure to have guests like Steve, Jo and the boys. Thank you!!

We had a great holiday. The Gite was spotless, well appointed and comfortable and the pool was only 20 steps away (according to our youngest Oliver aged 12 3/4) Our eldest son (16) was so pleased with that he could connect with the Internet (and so were we).

Phil & Glyn were the perfect hosts and were always keen to advise on local amenities and events. Local restaurants were excellent and with Cognac only 5 minutes away all of the facilities of a large town were readily available.

We have traveled in France many times but had never fully explored this region, there is plenty to see and do locally and within an hours drive. It was an excellent vacation, we highly recommend Gites de Brives and hope to return soon
