This impressive stone house is set in its own enclosed large gardens (3,000 sq metres) within a quiet rural farming hamlet. Whilst retaining many original features, it has been renovated to include all modern comforts. The size and layout of the house make it the perfect "gite" for a large group, 2 families, or 3 generations.
It is a short drive from the pretty historic market towns of St Jean d’Angely and Surgeres with their restaurants and tourist attractions, particularly alive and bustling during the Summer season. Closer to home, it’s just 3 km from the nearest café/bar, general store and 2 excellent restaurants. The lawned gardens and 11 x 5 metre in ground private swimming pool with roman steps provide ample space for family relaxation and recreation. The sunbathing patios have plenty of sunloungers with ample garden furniture, shaded areas and fruit trees for “cooling off”. The thick stone walls of the house provide a welcome retreat in the hot summer months. Horseriding is available 3km away, and the quiet country lanes all around are safe for family walks or bike rides.
A short walk away is a riverside picnic area. The house is perfectly placed for visits to the beautiful cities of La Rochelle and Saintes, for the vineyards of the Cognac region, or boating on the Charente or the waterways of the beautiful Marais Poitevin or "Venise Verte" (Green Venice). The lovely sandy beaches of Fouras or Chatelaillon Plage are only 40 minutes away, with the wonderful islands of Ile de Re and Ile d’Oleron just beyond.

The huge oval oak table seats 12 and is a marvellous gathering place for a large group to dine or for fun after-dinner games. There is a large open log fireplace, and exposed stone walls and beams. Cd/radio/cassette player for background music.

We love the beaches at Fouras, Chatelaillon Plage (both approx 40 minutes) and, a little further on the Atlantic beaches at Ile d'Oleron.
World famous brandy names - Hennessy, Remy Martin, etc - have their distilleries in Cognac and offer tours and tastings. Why not take a boat up the Charente to Cognac from St Jean d'Angely - a great day out!
This is a fantastic day out for children (young and old!). Virtual rides, including the spectacular "Dancing with Robots". Just over an hour's drive away or take the train from Surgeres to Poitiers Futuroscope station.
Fantastic courses at Royan and La Rochelle, other local courses include Saintes and Niort.
There are many historical sites in the area, dating back to Roman times, including an amphitheatre in Saintes and many ancient churches. Worth a visit are the towns of Saintes, St Jean d'Angely, Surgeres, Niort, and Cognac. We love the Chateau de la Roche Courbon (40 km) which has an interesting guided tour.
There is a lovely safe riding school in St Felix, just 3 kms away. English speaking which is great for the children.
Why not spend a few hours on the beautiful island of Ile de Re (bridge toll applies) and then enjoy the delights of La Rochelle with its lovely harbour, restaurants, and historical sites. Don't miss the excellent Aquarium near the station, which is great for the occasional rainy day.
We can highly recommend Le Clos Gourmand, a gourmet restaurant just 3 km away in St Felix. Also excellent is the restaurant at the Trout Fishery in Migre, again just 3 km away. Both St Jean d'Angely and Surgeres have a variety of good restaurants to suit all tastes and budgets. Regrettably, some might say, there is also a MacDonalds at St Jean d'Angely!!
Great midweek markets in St Jean d'Angely and Surgeres with fantastic local produce including oysters from Marennes (the oyster capital of France). Also a good Sunday market at Aulnay.
Chateau de la Gateaudiere at Marennes (just before the bridge onto Ile d'Oleron). Excellent outdoor activity centre where you can participate in tree climbing activities, zip wires, etc. Courses range from easy to very challenging! Height restrictions apply.
Aqualand in St Jean d'Angely has great swimming pool for children and boating lake and river for canoes, pedaloes and boat trips on the Charente. Lovely miniature boats for rides at St Savinien. Brilliant surfing on the Ile d'Oleron. Hire a boat or punt on the Marais Poitevin (recommend Coulon as really pretty village) and glide at leisure beneath the willows and poplars.
This is a marvellous zoo where you can get up close to the animals.
