The property was formerly a Cognac distillery, which has now been converted into this delightful complex, including a heated swimming pool with sun terraces, summer kitchen and barbecue, large gardens, paddock and an orchard of walnut trees set amongst the attractive countryside.

This gite which is one of 5 at Le Manoir de La Foye have been carefully restored and upgraded into comfortable homes for your holiday.

Located in Charente Maritime, the second sunniest region of France, the hamlet of La Foye is surrounded by extensive fields of sunflowers and vineyards, with the magnificent Forest of Aulnay just moments away offering wonderful walks and bicycle rides.

With easy access from all directions, especially the A10 autoroute, the region is renowned for its Cognac, oysters, cheeses and friendly people. Charente Maritime is situated on the south west coast of France and is part of the larger Poitou Charentes region. It enjoys long hot summers and very mild winters which are so necessary for the production of fine grapes used to make the wonderful wines and Cognac. It is known locally as the 'western Mediterranean' and enjoys the second highest number of sunshine hours in France (after the Cote d’Azur).

The kitchen
The attractive and practical kitchen with a tiled floor and beamed wooden ceiling offers plenty of storage. A spiral staircase leads to a large upper hallway with access to the bedrooms and the bathrooms.

Living rooms

This is a delightful and spacious, Two bedroom stone gite in an enclosed courtyard. Located in the grounds of a former Cognac distillery, Le Gite du Portail is approached through grand entrance gates and has its own large, partially shaded garden with extensive views over wonderful open countryside.

This gite has been carefully renovated and recently modernised to a very high standard, offering spacious accommodation for up to 4 people. Le Gite du Portail is surprisingly spacious inside with thick stone walls, making it beautifully cool in summer and very cosy in the winter.

Bedrooms

The double bedroom
Upstairs are 2 sizeable bedrooms. The main bedroom is approximately 6 x 5m, with a beamed, vaulted ceiling and has a super king size bed. This room has an en suite shower room with hand basin and wc. A feature of this bedroom is a stained glass window, hand-crafted locally in Vinax by an artist who has renovated windows of Salisbury Cathedral in England.

The second bedroom has twin beds. Both rooms are very comfortable and benefit from fitted carpets and rugs. There is a well appointed modern bathroom with a full size bath, wc, separate shower and hairdryer. Ample hot water is always available.

With the option of efficient gas-fired central heating Le Gîte du Portail is a perfect place to stay at any time of the year.

We also have 2 gites with 3 bedrooms. See our website, www.giteslafoye.com for more information.

Wi-fi is available in the Salle de Jour.

Garden and outside

Each gite has a gas barbecue, an outside table, chairs and a parasol for shade.

There is also a lovely summer kitchen area with more tables, chairs and a traditional barbecue made from the old bread oven. During the summer months we hold a "Welcome Evening" on Mondays alternating between a bbq and a paella.

Every gite has UK satellite tv but we doubt if you will waste much time watching it, as there is so much to do. A library of dvds, videos and books is also available for guests.

The pool area is perfectly situated for all day sunshine and far enough from the gites so as not to disturb the other residents. There are plenty of loungers and chairs to spread out over the extensive patio. For your safety, the heated pool conforms to French safety regulations and has an alarm.
The hot tub is available when the pool is not in commission.

The Owner Recommends

Aulnay

Just 15 minutes by car you will find the immaculate town square of Aulnay. The charming town boasts a full range of boutiques and shops including an Intermarché supermarket. The town has weekly markets, bars, hairdressers, and 2 chemists. Aulnay Church is a World Heritage Monument and is regarded as one of the top 10 Romanesque churches in France.

Donkey Sanctuary, Zoo

There are many tourist attractions nearby including a Donkey Sanctuary where you can rent a donkey with a backpack to carry your picnic, an open air Zoo Park featuring northern hemisphere animals that is so good we have had guests who have gone twice in one holiday! Both of these are within a 25 minute drive of us!

Winerys and Seafood

The combination of the words "Charente" and "Maritime" help to capture the magic of this department – producing as it does the best from the land with the Cognac grapes, cereal crops and fields of sunflowers – and the best from the ocean with the oysters, mussels and fish. Located with the Atlantic to the west of its 150 mile coastline, the Vendee and Deux-Sevres to the north, the Dordogne to the east and the Gironde to the south, the Charente-Maritime is a magnificent and exceptional part of France.
