About the Owner/Advertiser, Mrs Jacqueline Berry

Having spent the best part of 25 years touring and holidaying across France when our children were young, we finally took the plunge and made a home here two years ago.

Year property purchased 2014
Why this location? A peaceful village location in beautiful countryside, yet the pretty town of St Jean d'Angély is on our doorstep with its delightful abbey, shops, cafés and some superb restaurants. We have easy access to La Rochelle, the sandy beaches of the Atlantic coast, stunning châteaux, cognac vineyards and the waterways of the Marais Poitevin.

Whether you like to swim and sunbathe, cycle, sight-see, sample the local delicacies or take in a round of golf, there is something for everyone within striking distance.

With three airports less than 1.5 hours' drive away (and a further three just 2 hours' drive), as well as great motorway links from the Channel ports and the Tunnel, your journey to Rue Vincent and home again should be plain sailing!
Unique benefits of property Our family and dog-friendly cottage sits in a large, enclosed garden on the edge of the village. With three comfortable bedrooms and a sofa-bed in the living space, we can easily accommodate up to eight guests but are equally delighted to welcome couples to enjoy our tranquil surroundings.

Just 10km from the cottage, Aulnay is a large village with all amenities (supermarket, bakeries, banks, pharmacies, post office, garage, bars & restaurants), a large market on Sunday morning and a smaller produce market each Thursday in the town square. The open air swimming pool with games area and café is open throughout July and August, while the public tennis courts remain open all year round The commune is on the pilgrims' route of Santiago de Compostela and its Romanesque church, St-Pierre d’Aulnay (a UNESCO World Heritage site) is noted for its impressive architecture.

La Rochelle

The old port of La Rochelle has plenty to entertain you and some lovely restaurants, not forgetting some fabulous shops in which to spend your holiday money!

Local Attractions

The nearby beach at Chatelaillon Plage is child friendly and the vast sandy beaches of Royan are easily reached by car. Whether your family like pony and horse riding, visits to Roman ruins or the underwater world of an Aquarium, there is much to do and see around the Charente Maritime, while the vineyards and producers of Cognac are also well worth a visit. Lovers of Cognac are spoiled for choice by the number of small producers within a short drive (20-30mins) of Le Vincent. The distillery of Jean Balluet at Neuvicq-le-Chateau is one such gem, offering a free tour and both tastings and sales of their cognac and Pineau des Charentes; the delicious local apéritif. There is a stunning 360 degree view across the vines from the top of the tower there which once housed vineyard workers at harvest time.

Local Markets

St Jean d’Angely hosts markets on Wednesdays and Saturdays in the Place du Marché and in the covered Halles. A large variety of stalls to browse, both inside and out and an impressive array of fresh local produce from oysters to pastries and just about everything in between. The sheer range of fish on offer in the covered market is mind-boggling: a real photo opportunity as well as a chance to put something stunning on the barbeque! On Sundays, the village of Aulnay de Saintonge, also just 10km from Le Vincent, hosts a small market in the square. A delightful way to spend a Sunday morning before heading into one of the restaurants or bars for a pause café or lunch. In addition to the local produce markets, there are always numerous opportunities to attend brocantes and vide-grenier markets with all manner of bric-a-brac in surrounding villages and towns nearby throughout the spring and summer.

Saintes

Around 30 minutes' drive south of the cottage, the charming market town of Saintes is famous for its Roman architecture, notably the impressive Arc de Germanicus, standing proudly on the banks of the Charente river; the amphitheatre and the Cathédral de St-Pierre. It is also the birthplace of a certain Dr Guillotin, whose quest for a more humane means of execution led to the invention of the eponymous guillotine.

10 / 10 Nyree 19 August, 2016

The gite was even better than we expected. It was very comfortable and very well-equipped. It was in a lovely, peaceful location but close to main towns for supplies. The owners were on hand and incredibly welcoming and hospitable. The pool is secluded and a very good size. There is a great games room on site with table football, table tennis, pool and darts. The area has many interesting towns and places to visit nearby. We had a wonderful holiday and very much hope to return.

Owner response

Thank you, Nyree for your lovely review. It was a real pleasure to meet you all and we are delighted that you enjoyed your holiday. We very much look forward to welcoming you to stay with us again in the future.
