About this property

18th Century Cottage with Heated Pool & Hot Tub. This cottage/gite is in a rural setting.

Positioned in a small hamlet in a very peaceful countryside location with vines alongside the spacious lawned, fenced garden, this charming 18th century stone cottage has been beautifully renovated to provide high quality relaxing holiday accommodation. Exposed beams and limestone walls retain its character whilst all modern facilities including free wi-fi access are provided.

Our heat-pump typically maintains the 40m² pool around 27-28°C May through September (unlike solar heating which cannot be relied on to do this!) and a fabulous 7 person, 42 jet hot tub at 37°C is great on an evening and any cooler days. All enclosed by legally required, approved safety fencing and gate.

The roof terrace has terrific uninterrupted 30km views and the lawned garden has apple, cherry and fig trees to provide shade on our many hot, sunny days. The barn gamesroom has table tennis and other entertainment, plus there are a few bikes for your use on the miles of meandering tracks and quiet roads accessible directly from the garden.

The south facing pool terrace with heated (28°C) 9.0 x 4.4m private pool has sunloungers, table and chairs, awnings and parasols and is enclosed by safety fencing and gate to ensure small children cannot enter without supervision. The pool has 'Roman steps' for easy access, an underwater light and a saltwater sanitisation system which is kinder on the eyes and skin than traditional chlorination.

Gated stairs lead to the roof terrace where you will find a table and seating. There are uninterrupted views to the horizon 33km away over vines, orchards and fields of sunflowers. Out and About

At St Jean D'Angely there is a large pool complex with a 54m water fume. A Karting track caters for the budding Lewis Hamiltons. There is also an excellent park with a large leisure lake with pedaloes and kayaks for hire. St Jean is a charming town with medieval buildings, an impressive old market hall and the beautiful Abbaye Royale. Saintes has an important Roman history and here you will find an imposing amphitheatre, a museum and many other Roman artefacts. You can take a boat trip or hire small boats on the Charente here. There are 2 magnificent churches that dominate the town and the layout and architecture makes it an ideal place for a leisurely lunch or afternoon. For the more active you will also find ten pin bowling, karting and gliding. The lovely old town of Cognac is known for the drink that bears its name and the famous distillery’s of Hennessy, Martell, Remy Martin and others all offer interesting guided tours - some with boat or rail trips. Further afield you can visit the Marais Poitevin near Niort for a canal trip.

The village of St Hilaire De Villefranche is only 4 kms away, and here you will find a small supermarket selling almost everything you will need for your stay, 2 bakeries (for your morning baguette and croissant), butcher, an excellent restaurant, good pizzeria, bar/restaurant, pharmacy, hairdresser, garages, bank with cashpoint, post office and tobacconist/newsagent and very helpful tourist information office. At St Jean D'Angely you will find larger supermarkets, a bustling market, many cafes and restaurants.

The Coastal Area

The Coast. The nearest beaches are at Royan (50 kms) about 45 mins away by car. All along the coast are superb sandy beaches ranging from gentle and safe for all the family, to the wild Cote Sauvage with its Atlantic breakers popular with kite surfers. There are many lovely small resorts with beaches and restaurants ideal for a day out. The Gironde estuary (45 mins) is dotted with charming small fishing / yachting ports with harbour side cafes and restaurants.

We had a really magical holiday at Chez Rivieres! Steve and Moira couldn’t be more welcoming and hospitable. The house, garden and pool are very child friendly with plenty of space to explore and fruit to pick and Ollie the gorgeous lab to pet. Steve and Moira suggested some lovely days out. We would highly recommend the rope walks and zip wires. All in all a tranquil retreat with a perfect balance of peace and friendliness and family activities.

Owner response

Hi Rosie and all.

Thank you for your lovely review; we are so pleased that you all enjoyed your holiday. The short drive to L'Abbé de Fontdouce with it's tree walk and zip wires certainly went down well with the girls.

Good luck in your new home.
Steve and Moira.

Cottage is absolutely gorgeous and set in a beautiful location. Steve and Moira (the owners) live next door and are the perfect hosts. They are there if you need them but allow you all the privacy you require.

The grounds, the pool, the hot tub and the cottage are maintained to such a high standard. It felt such a luxury to have our own pool which we spent time in every day.

The cottage is set in the countryside and therefore there is the requirement to drive to a local shop - nearest is around 4 km away. This didn’t bother us at all. Beach around 45-50 mins away.

Would not hesitate to recommend and would love to go back. We all had an amazing holiday.

Owner response

Thank you very much Rachel and all. We are so glad you enjoyed your stay here and the local area visits you had.

What a wonderful holiday. Chez Rivieres beat our expectations and in our view, the online photos don't do justice to the quality of this gîte. The gardens are expansive (and well fenced), the views idyllic, the pool warm, clean and safe and the sun terrace adds an extra element to the sense of space and location. We are a family of five, including two toddlers and a teenager and we felt entirely at home in terms of their safety and the space available for us all. Our hosts, Steve and Moira, couldn't have been more welcoming and helpful. This was our third such holiday and easily the best yet for overall value, comfort and homeliness. As for location, the boxes are ticked again. The beach at Royan is 45 mins drive away, there are loads of local walking, jogging and cycling options, the local shops and supermarkets are easy to get to by car and there are lots of easy-to-reach day trip destinations. We really enjoyed ourselves.

Owner response

Thank you John for your review.
We are so pleased that you enjoyed your holiday here and got to do and see the local sites. We certainly enjoyed having you and your young family around.
Take care
