The pool has 'Roman steps' for easy access, an underwater light and a saltwater sanitisation system which is kinder on the eyes and skin than traditional chlorination.

At St Jean D'Angely there is a large pool complex with a 54m water fume. A Karting track caters for the budding Lewis Hamiltons. There is also an excellent park with a large leisure lake with pedaloes and kayaks for hire. St Jean is a charming town with medieval buildings, an impressive old market hall and the beautiful Abbaye Royale. Saintes has an important Roman history and here you will find an imposing amphitheatre, a museum and many other Roman artefacts. You can take a boat trip or hire small boats on the Charente here. There are 2 magnificent churches that dominate the town and the layout and architecture makes it an ideal place for a leisurely lunch or afternoon. For the more active you will also find ten pin bowling, karting and gliding. The lovely old town of Cognac is known for the drink that bears its name and the famous distillery’s of Hennessy, Martell, Remy Martin and others all offer interesting guided tours - some with boat or rail trips. Further afield you can visit the Marais Poitevin near Niort for a canal trip.
The village of St Hilaire De Villefranche is only 4 kms away, and here you will find a small supermarket selling almost everything you will need for your stay, 2 bakeries (for your morning baguette and croissant), butcher, an excellent restaurant, good pizzeria, bar/restaurant, pharmacy, hairdresser, garages, bank with cashpoint, post office and tobacconist/newsagent and very helpful tourist information office. At St Jean D'Angely you will find larger supermarkets, a bustling market, many cafes and restaurants.
The Coast. The nearest beaches are at Royan (50 kms) about 45 mins away by car. All along the coast are superb sandy beaches ranging from gentle and safe for all the family, to the wild Cote Sauvage with its Atlantic breakers popular with kite surfers. There are many lovely small resorts with beaches and restaurants ideal for a day out. The Gironde estuary (45 mins) is dotted with charming small fishing / yachting ports with harbour side cafes and restaurants.
Moira and Steve were great hosts. The cottage was perfect, the heated pool especially. Many great places to visits within easy drive.
Thanks Graeme. So pleased that you all had a great time and such good weather.
This is a perfect holiday cottage located in the pretty Charente Maritime countryside. The cottage was spotlessly clean with all the amenities required for a stay. The boys loved the pool and the large garden, just ideal to keep them occupied. Steve, Moira and Olliedog (their 8 year old Labrador) are the ideal hosts, warm and welcoming, visible only when needed. They provide a lovely welcome pack for your arrival, just right for starting your stay. Although situated slightly away from the main beach resorts all are easily reachable for day trips, with the Cote Sauvage beaches being especially good for a visit. Away from the beaches, there are plenty of cycle routes, an ideal one being the 20km forest track between Ronce Les Bains and La Palmyre - just great even for an 8 year old. Another attraction well worth a visit is the La Valle des Singes in Romagne. Although just over an hour away this zoo dedicated to monkeys is worth going to just to be there for gorilla feeding time.
Thanks Stuart. Glad to hear that you all had another great holiday here and managed to fit in a few more attractions this year. Olliedog took a while to get used to the boys not being around!!
The cottage is lovely, I would say better than described in the advert. It is very quaint and lovingly restored. Everything was in perfect working condition, it was cosy and more roomy than I thought, particularly with three teenagers and two dogs!! The property was very clean an well stocked with necessities.
The gardens and pool area were perfect. It was so hot we spent time every day in the pool and some evenings in the hot tub. The dogs loved the gardens which were safe for them to explore without having to worry bout them escaping. It was so hot whist we were there they spent a lot of time indoors on the tiled floor.
It was a quiet area so we needed to explore and go further afield to get to the beach or shopping. It was so hot we were restricted taking the dogs with us however the owners were very happy to watch the dogs if we went out and this made a huge difference to us and was very much appreciated.
The owners provided excellent service, nothing was too much trouble and if I needed anything at all they were on hand to help out.
I would definitely recommend this property for a superb relaxing holiday either for a family or a couple for a quiet getaway.
Overall an excellent holiday experience, no complaints at all!
Thanks Rachel, very pleased that you had a great holiday and that you found our cottage to your liking. It certainly was hot!
We had a fabulous holiday at Chez Rivieres.
The setting is perfect in a small peaceful hamlet surrounded by vineyards. The garden is beautiful and immaculately kept, and Steve and Moira invited us to help ourselves to the fruit off the trees and freedom to roam the whole spacious garden. We especially enjoyed watching the sunset with a glass of wine on the raised terrace with fantastic views of the countryside.
Although Steve and Moira live next door, they were very discreet and you really felt you had the place to yourselves. They are lovely people and we enjoyed sharing drinks and getting to know them at the start of the holiday.
The pool and hot tub are great with all the facilities you'd expect around a pool, and all in such a beautiful setting it really is a holiday paradise.
The house is lovely, full of charm, spacious, immaculately clean and well equipped. Being an old farmhouse, the thick walls keep it lovely and cool so you can take a break from the summer heat. Our daughter appreciated the UK Freeview TV.
We enjoyed our visits to St Jean, Saintes, Cognac and La Rochelle which offer good restaurants, shops, canoeing and places to visit but, to be honest, we were always keen to make an early return to the pool in those beautiful gardens and rural idyll.
We would highly recommend Chez Rivieres to friends and family. An absolute holiday success.
