The pool has 'Roman steps' for easy access, an underwater light and a saltwater sanitisation system which is kinder on the eyes and skin than traditional chlorination.

At St Jean D'Angely there is a large pool complex with a 54m water fume and karting. There is also an excellent park with a large leisure lake with pedaloes and kayaks for hire. St Jean is a charming town with medieval buildings, an impressive old market hall and the beautiful Abbaye Royale. Saintes has an important Roman history and here you will find an imposing amphitheatre, a museum and many other Roman artefacts. You can take a boat trip or hire small boats on the Charente here. There are 2 magnificent churches that dominate the town and the layout and architecture makes it an ideal place for a leisurely lunch or afternoon. For the more active you will also find ten pin bowling, karting and gliding. The lovely old town of Cognac is known for the drink that bears its name and the famous distillery’s of Hennessy, Martell, Remy Martin and others all offer interesting guided tours - some with boat or rail trips. Further afield you can visit the Marais Poitevin near Niort for a canal trip.
The village of St Hilaire De Villefranche is only 4 kms away, and here you will find a small supermarket selling almost everything you will need for your stay, 2 bakeries (for your morning baguette and croissant), butcher, an excellent restaurant, good pizzeria, bar/restaurant, pharmacy, hairdresser, garages, bank with cashpoint, post office and tobacconist/newsagent and very helpful tourist information office. At St Jean D'Angely you will find larger supermarkets, a bustling market, many cafes and restaurants.
The Coast. The nearest beaches are at Royan (50 kms) about 45 mins away by car. All along the coast are superb sandy beaches ranging from gentle and safe for all the family, to the wild Cote Sauvage with its Atlantic breakers popular with kite surfers. There are many lovely small resorts with beaches and restaurants ideal for a day out. The Gironde estuary (45 mins) is dotted with charming small fishing / yachting ports with harbour side cafes and restaurants.
Cottage was beautiful, with lush gardens and fabulous views, particularly from the roof terrace-beautiful sunsets.
The cottage itself was great, quirky traditional French cottage, open beams, clean and well presented with all appliances and utensils in place. Very comfortable beds and couch, and aTV/DVD player for when you need to be out of the sun.
Pool and hot tub were great, with exclusive use and very clean!
The entire stay was wonderful, with plenty to do in and around the surrounding areas, and would very definitely recommend Cognac and Saint for a day out - good restaurants and bars, nice shops, to appreciate the beautiful architecture and also to wander round the market.
The hosts, moi and Steve, were lovely and very welcoming. And Ollie (the dog) was ace.
Couldn't have asked for more on a relaxing holiday, and can't recommend Chez Riv highly enough.
Weren't expecting the owners to be living in an attached property but any concerns we might have had were soon dispelled. Steve and Moira were charming (drinks at their place the first night to get to know each other), largely invisible until we needed help and sympathetic to any need for privacy. Very helpful as well when we needed advice on getting around.
We brought our puppy, Billy and we were delighted when he found a playmate in Ollie (owners' dog). They played every day and we appreciated Steve's offer to "Billy-sit" if we needed to tour around.
Property was v clean and well maintained. We marked a slightly lower score on the Comfort as we might suggest that Steve and Moira have a look at the mattresses as some of our party found them a little soggy.
Great facilities. I think we used all of them (a lot !) and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves as a result. Such as: Table Tennis, BBQ, pool and jacuzzi - something for every member of the family. Beautiful beaches and historic places of interest all within easy reach. Quaint villages and restaurants nearby for every taste. Great range of supermarkets so we never went short of the local delicacies. Great location.
Yes we would definitely recommend this property to a friend or relative.
Thanks again Steve and Moira.
Thank you Caroline for your review and kind words - we are glad that you all enjoyed your stay with us.
We will have a look at the mattresses - by soggy I hope you meant soft! :)
Mattresses...mmmm...soft...firm...it's a difficult one to get right for everyone...but we will try....
Thanks again for taking the time for us,
Steve & Moira
