About this property

Charming Spacious 19th Century Farmhouse. This cottage/gite is in a rural setting.

Thinking about your summer holiday ? ....Our farmhouse, one of a cluster of 4 individually styled character gites at La Fermette France, sleeps up to 7 (+ baby in cot).......Great for larger families or families travelling together.

Relax in a peaceful farming hamlet where the most noise you'll hear is the sound of tractors !.......rural but not remote ......surrounded by fields of wheat, sunflowers and vines with shops and restaurants a short cycle ride away (2.5km).

Visit numerous beautiful sandy beaches (nearest 30 mins away), medieval towns, vineyards producing Bordeaux wines and Cognac, pretty ports of the Gironde estuary, and summer night markets with music, food and convivial atmosphere.

Check out the games barn with adults and children's bikes, body boards for the surfing beaches and buckets and spades for the child friendly beaches and lots more to keep you busy. Enjoy the orchard field which is great space for children to run around and also for grown ups to watch the beautiful sunsets we have (glass of wine in hand of course). We encourage guests to pick any fruit in season - cherries, peaches, figs, pears, quince and walnuts.

......and when it's too hot to sit outside there is the open barn which provides cool sitting out space while you BBQ your finds from one of the local markets.... or you can relax by our fabulous 10m x 5m swimming pool.

As the farmhouse is one of a cluster of 4 gites, the games barn, orchard field and swimming pool are shared with other guests.

The farmhouse has two double bedrooms (1 en suite and 1 with en suite toilet), and a triple bedroom (single beds). There is a ground floor family shower room, a large well equipped family kitchen and a comfortable sitting room which opens out to the south facing garden.......

Baby and toddler equipment is available on request at no charge - highchair, travelcot, bed guards, potty, toilet step & seat, changing mat, small toys, crayons and paper.

......and we're flexible about what day you arrive or leave as long as you stay at least 5 nights.

Fly to Bordeaux or La Rochelle - only 1 hour away, or travel by Brittany Ferries and get 20% fares ! St Malo is only 4 hours drive and Caen/Le Havre are 5 - 6 hours drive.

We are registered with the Mairie as required in France.

About the Owner/Advertiser, Mrs Lesley Houareau

We are Lesley & Felix Houareau. We live in a village just outside Bath. We feel very lucky that we live in a beautiful part of the UK but can also spend time in the Charente Maritime area of France with it's medieval towns and great beaches

Year property purchased 2004
Why this location? We looked for a region with good weather but easier to travel to than the South of France. The Charente Maritime is the 2nd sunniest region of France and a hidden gem known about by the French. Lots of great beaches to choose from and great local (small) markets and rolling countryside with towns and villages with lots of character.
Unique benefits of property We are in a peaceful hamlet 2.5km from the nearest town but surrounded by fields of sunflowers, wheat and vines and lots of local wildlife. The myriad of lanes around our gites are great to explore by foot or bike (we have a selection of bikes on hand). We are close to the Bordeaux / Blaye wine region as well being able to by the best Cognac locally. Wine, good food, sun and beaches - what more could you want?

The Owner Recommends

For relaxation there is the beach, or rather beaches, as the Charente Maritime has over 470kms of coastline. We have details of the best local beaches which include....... small coves backed by cliffs of pale honey coloured stone...... town beaches..... long stretches of golden sand backed by dunes and pine trees.....

Home of the famous spirit. Visit one of the Cognac houses or wander along the riverside or through the pedestrianised old town. In July each year Cognac hosts the Blues Passion - a week of outdoor concerts in beautifully landscaped grounds. Previous years have included sets from George Benson, Lenny Kravitz, Lily Allen, Sting and many more. Also in July is the Cognac Festival - a celebration of the drink itself!

A local Spa town with elegant buildings and a weekly night market in July and and street food plus some local crafts. Great atmosphere

Local Markets

There's a local market nearby every day of the week where you can buy the great local produce to cook at La Fermette.......also several weekly night markets in July and August with street food and entertainment And if you enjoy eating out there is a great choice of local restaurants including several with Michelin stars

Pretty medieval town close by. Picturesque square overlooking the Donjon - enjoy the view from one of the cafes. Don't miss the Bastille Day celebrations on 14th July, or the medieval festival on 23rd July 2016

An excellent quiet and pretty location, excellent facilities and very friendly owners.

Short drive to many lovely french villages, and some larger towns.

The property matched its description. It was very comfortable and spacious for our family.Beds were especially comfortable for a holiday home and guaranteed a restful night's sleep for all.The swimming pool was a fantastic addition and was a very comfortable temperature. The owners couldn't have been more helpful and were great company without being intrusive.I would certainly recommend the property to families. There are plenty activities and day trips in the locality to keep everyone in the group entertained. We look forward to returning to this area to explore some more!

Perfect setting for the kids to enjoy themselves: bikes, table tennis, beach stuff (beaches 40 mins away) to borrow, orchard for running about in, with the highlight being the pool of course.

The house itself was lovely, all the mod-cons but and in keeping with the French rustic feel.

Lesley and Felix were ever-so helpful throughout, ensuring we had all the info we needed and making us feel welcome.

The village has beautiful walks and cycle routes, with Pons being close for kayaking and markets, plus the small village of St Genis de Saintonage only 4 mins away for bread and milk.

Very much hope to return!

We stayed for a long weekend with a group of friends/university reunion/birthday gathering - the facilities were perfect and there was plenty to entertain us including the games room with ping pong table, the large BBQ, bat and ball sets, countryside for morning runs, private garden area for sunset watching, bicycles, a large barn for alfresco style dining and Pinot Cognac vineyards nearby!

Our stay was very well organised with an informative pre-stay email, very easy driving directions from Bordeaux airport and stress-free check in details.

We would highly recommend the property to others - either as a group or as a couple since there is a range of accommodation on the plot from a large farmhouse with a well-equipped kitchen and living space to romantic studio style accommodation and cosy self-contained mezzanine apartments. The decor is shabby chic with charming cottage features and plenty of style to keep you intrigued!

Thank you Lesley and Felix for a memorable weekend :-)
