|Why this location?||Poitou Charentes is a beautiful part of France, full of history and with amazing scenery. It has a good climate, with plenty of sun. We fell in love with Charente Maritime with its vineyards, friendly locals and vibrant atmosphere. Chez Sibert felt perfect, a typical Charentaise house, with plenty of room, a lovely flat garden and amazing pool, set in perfect surroundings.|
|Unique benefits of property||Chez Sibert was professionally modernised in 2015 to provide a comfortable, all year round holiday home. The traditional 150 year old house is designed to be cool in summer and warm in the winter, and well equipped for you to enjoy your stay. There is so much to do and see whatever the season.
The Charente-Maritime is renowned for its micro-climate. This provides long periods of sunshine, second only to the French Riviera. This usually lasts from March to October, with warm days at both ends of the season, and even the winters can be mild.
Situated on a small hill above the Charente valley in the ancient province of Saintonge, the property is surrounded by vineyards planted to get the maximum sun possible – these produce the grapes for the famous cognac and delicious local fortified wine called pineau.
The vines are edged by small woods which attract a variety of wildlife. For example from the garden you can see deer walking through vines in the morning. Altogether peaceful
Saintes is a beautiful town, lovely to walk around, good shops to look at. The history of Saintes goes back to Celtic times. It is the site of many Gallo-Romanic remains, in particular the amphitheatre in the centre of Saintes, and the Roman arch on the banks of the River Charente. There is also small interesting museum of Roman relics. The town also featured in Plantagenet times, Taillebourg being the site of a battle between Henry III and Simon de Montfort, won by de Montfort, out of which sprang the first English Parliament. The river Charente is beautiful - it is worth taking a trip up the river to see some of the local sites (including the chateau of Taillebourg
Cognac is an historic old town, its main claim to fame being the cognac industry. There are many distilleries in the town, most can be visited, and the cognac they make also being sampled. The vineyards around the area (and those around Chez Sibert) are all used to grow the grapes that produce Cognac. A particularly favourite local drink is Pineau des Charentes, a sherry like drink made from a mixture of cognac and Charentaise white wine. It can be bought from many local distilleries well signed by roadsides
