As we are new to HFD we have no reviews on this site but this is a review from a guest family from last summer.
"On arrival at 8pm with two children (aged 4 and 6) and a crazy dog we were given a warm welcome by Sandra and Mark who had the pool open and warm to jump straight in which was a lovely start to the holiday along with a great welcome pack.
The house is immaculate and has everything you could need.
The bedrooms were great - comfortable with white, crisp, clean linen and the girls loved The Den especially the glow up stars on the ceiling above their beds.
The bathrooms were spotless, modern with good quality towels. There was wifi throughout the whole property and it even reached the pool.
The garden is stunning with beautiful places to sit and rest. The garden immediately outside our kitchen was fenced off and meant we could leave the back door open at all times knowing the girls could not get into the rest of the garden where the pool was without us.
The pool was warm and huge and positioned perfectly for all day sun.
There is plenty to do in the area - we went to Cognac, an airshow, Royan beach, Blaye, night markets and indoor swimming at Jonzac all easily accessible but the thing we loved doing the most was enjoying the pool and garden.
One of our concerns before we arrived was how it would be having the owners living on site. We didn't need to worry as Sandra and Mark were warm and welcoming but then faded away into the background only appearing when needed and their generosity in keeping an eye on the dog when we went out was amazing.
Because it is also their home everything is to a high standard and small things like making sure the pool is kept at a constant (high) temperature are kept an eye on.
I would definitely recommend this house to anyone with children of any age or adults only. For young children the enclosed garden with swings, slide and amazing wildlife (not least the large family of swifts) will keep them amused for hours. For older children the pool table, table tennis etc should keep them amused if they ever get fed up of the pool.
For those without children this house offers a complete escape with true peace and quiet. There are areas to sit and read a book or just close your eyes and not hear a thing for hours. The house is big enough to accommodate a larger group with a large outside table comfortable to sit at with a few bottles of wine until the early hours."
The kitchen/diner is spacious and well equipped. We provide everything you'll need whether you love to cook a little...or a lot. If we don't have it- just ask and we will do our best to supply whatever it is you need. It is equipped with a new family sized fridge-freezer, a gas cooker, microwave, four slot toaster, dishwasher, coffee-maker and table and chairs for 6/8. In the cupboards you'll find all the cutlery, crockery, glasses and kitchen implements you'll need to cook up whatever feast you fancy.
Tea towels are provided.
Salt and pepper, cooking oil, cling film, tin foil, washing up liquid, washing cloth, dishwasher tablets are provided to start you off.
We also provide a welcome pack of tea, coffee, sugar, milk, bread, butter, cheese and a bottle of Bordeaux wine.
Outside, there is a dining table on the private terrace with seating for 6/8 and an inside dining table in the lounge dining area for 6/8
The light and airy, double height beamed lounge and dining room is the centre piece of the inside of the Gite. When you see it I'm sure you will love the feel and the beauty of the old Elm beams. The lounge has a large leather corner sofa, and a further 2 seater sofa. The dining table can seat 6/8. It has a large flat screen tv with English Sky Freeview channels and a dvd player if you fancy a little time inside. The lounge also has a new log burner but I very much doubt you will need any extra heat.
The Gite can sleep up to 8 comfortably (a maximum of 4 adults due to the limited headroom in the attic) Above the lounge on a mezzanine, there is a romantic double bed and dressing area. There is also an attic room, with low ceiling height, suitable for up to 2 children. Downstairs there is a large en suite twin room with luxury single beds, wardrobe and dressing table. This is entered through a connecting room with bunk beds.
All bedding is 100% cotton and provided for your stay.
We also have a cot that can be placed in any of the bedrooms for your convenience with duvet, pillow, and bedding provided,
The Gite has a spacious and comfortable modern family bathroom equipped with a bath, separate shower cubicle, a basin unit, toilet and heated towel rail. The downstairs twin room also has a modern en suite bathroom (fitted in 2017) with a shower cubicle, basin unit, toilet and heated towel rail.
It is highly unlikely you will need any additional heating during the season (May to end of September) but the Gite is equipped with a powerful log burner in the main lounge dining area, a heated towel rail in the family bathroom and en suite bathroom and there are electric radiators in the kitchen and twin room for out of season bookings.
If lounging by the pool is not quite enough and you're a little more energetic the garden is also equipped with an all weather table tennis table, a full size pool table, the traditional French game of boule, a badminton net and racquets and a croquet set. If even that is not enough we have 2 mountain bikes you are welcome to borrow at your own risk! One men's and one ladies. If you like to bring your own bikes we can store them securely and this area is fantastic for cycling. The roads here are very quiet and in France cyclists are given the utmost consideration - it's the law! As a keen cyclist myself I'd be happy to point you in the right direction and suggest itineraries or accompany you if you would like some local knowledge. etc. There are many marked cycle routes in the area & we have maps for your use. If you aren't able to bring your bikes with you, we can arrange for cycle and accessory hire through www.bikehiredirect.com who will deliver it all to your doorstep.
The front of the Gite overlooks either sunflowers, wheat or maize towards the church at Sousmoulins that is beautifully lit up at night. At the rear is your private terrace area with views of the fields and foods behind Vacheroy. From the kitchen access the outside dining area, shaded cushioned benches, a wood/charcoal bbq and sun loungers. Within your fenced garden there is children's swing set, allowing children to play safely within view of the kitchen. Our brand new 10x5 metre heated swimming pool is the highlight for you to enjoy. Our pool features a hard security cover closed between 8pm and 10am. Although shared between the Gite & house, we generally try to allow you to enjoy in peace. It's situated in order to be in full sun from dawn to dusk & has an in-pool seating area so you can soak up the rays, whilst sitting & drinking your sundowners in the cooling water.... The pool is open between 10am & 8pm but those times can be varied by mutual consent.
Parking for the Gite is directly outside the cottage on a grass covered hard standing area. There is additional parking on the large driveway if required and there is a large barn should you need to secure any other items such as bicycles.
The twin room with en suite and the family bathroom are both on ground level so the Gite is suitable for those with mobility issues however, neither bathrooms are equipped as wet rooms or with additional grab rails. The garden area is also generally flat and easy to navigate although there are some gravelled areas.
Vacheroy Gite welcomes well behaved pets at a small supplement, registered guide/service dogs are welcome free of charge. Please make contact to discuss as we do have two dogs, a friendly older Miniature Schnauzer and a young Cavachon. Our garden is enclosed (as long as you remember to shut the gates) so is dog friendly. We can arrange the necessary trip to the vets prior to your departure from Vacheroy.
Vacheroy is a fully non smoking property.

|Why this location?||We fell in love with the house at first sight. We were looking in Charente Maritime as it has a superb climate and great road, rail and air links. On our doorstep are the vineyards of Bordeaux and Cognac, the cities of Angouleme and Bordeaux and the richness of French rural life. The garden is quiet with lots of space and the Gite ticked all the boxes. We have holidayed all over France and Marks parents had a holiday home in Gascony (nr Toulouse) for 15 years so we know France well. This area really has it all and the house is ideally positioned in a rural location but minutes from all amenities of a vibrant country town. Vacheroy is in the Cognac appellation in rural France, local produce abounds. Enjoy the local markets, vineyards, country walks, lakes and restaurants right on our doorstep or venture a little further afield for historic cities, beaches, medieval villages, the great Bordeaux vineyards of St Emillion or the Chateaux of the Medoc.|
|Unique benefits of property||When we bought the property there was no swimming pool but we were able to build the one we wanted rather than take over someone elses. We now have a superb 10x5 metre, in ground, heated pool with a huge 90 square metre sun terrace. The pool has been positioned so it catches the sun all day long. Our wi-fi covers the house, sun areas and pool so if you love being connected you will not lose that whilst here. Of course, you can just switch off and relax. The garden is large enough to play in, we have table tennis, boules, badminton and roquet! You can relax here or venture out and take in all the fantastic sights, sounds and activities. Fortresses, vineyards, medieval cities and villages, markets, festivals, beaches, lakes, a motor racing circuit, an ostrich farm, superb restaurants... Did we mention the vineyards? The coast, Bordeaux, Cognac and Angouleme are all within easy reach so come on down and enjoy everything this part of France has to offer.|
Our local town is Montendre, a settlement has been here since before Roman times. It has a small ruined chateau on the hill in the centre of town. A walk up to the Chateau tower and ramparts is rewarded with beautiful views over the town and surrounding countryside. Montendre is serviced by all the usual small shops so loved here in France. On top of that there are 2 medium sized supermarkets to ensure you have all you need. If you prefer fresh local produce, the town holds a lovely market every Thursday and Sunday mornings. In July and August there is also an evening Marché Gourmande every Tuesday evening. The centre of town is filled with food stalls and seating for hundreds. Here you can buy almost everything, hog roast, fish and chips, duck, snails, moule frites, salads, Chinese and Italian food. There is always a band, pop or more traditional, a fabulous family atmosphere and a couple of bars and stalls that sell local wines at amazingly low prices. Montendre also has a large boating lake surrounded by forest trails with plenty of other interesting pursuits including an outdoor gym, sailing, fishing & a large outdoor swimming pool with wave machine. Montendre also has a lovely nine hole golf course & there are riding stables on the outskirts. Montendre Lac is also the home to an annual music festival showcasing French & international bands called "Freemusic". Headliners in recent years have included Cypress Hill, The Kaiser Chiefs & Franz Ferdinand. The name doesn't mean the festival is free, you will have to purchase tickets on their website!
The number 1 up & coming city destination in Europe these days. Wonderful architecture, famous gastronomic restaurants, an amazing array of wine bars & shops and the longest pedestrianised shopping street in Europe. Bordeaux town centre is a 45 minute drive from us. Parking is easy & getting around the city either on foot, pedal cycle or by the super modern tram system is easy too. The riverfront has been re-developed to house more shops & restaurants and as a homage to wine in general but particularly Bordeaux wine, the wine museum, La Cité du Vin.
Cognac - a short drive away the town of Cognac hosts many of the famous cognac distilleries, most of which are open for excellent tours and tastings. The old quarter dates back to medieval times, the Charente river flows through the town and there are many bars and restaurants with a great range of food served on sunny terraces. There is also an excellent 18 hole golf course, 9 hole course, driving range and restaurant on site. In the first week of July the city is host to Cognac Blues Passion, a great festival of music.
Jonzac is the administrative centre of the area & has a pretty centre with a lovely Chateau, restaurants, bars & shops. Jonzac is famed for its thermal spa & people come from all over France to take the waters. As well as the medicinal spa, Jonzac has a large swimming & spa complex called Antilles de Jonzac with indoor & outdoor swimming, jacuzzi & steam rooms, fun for all the family, it is also open year round. Jonzac lac is a large lake with beach area & an outdoor restaurant. As with many of these lakes, there are kayaks & paddle boards for hire, a climbing tower & walking trails. Again in the area many vineyards offer tastings & tours.
St Emilion - a world heritage site, famed for its fantastic wine, St Emilion is a beautiful medieval town with cobbled streets, endless wine merchants, shops & restaurants. About 45 minutes from us, it is a perfect day out, a town surrounded by beautiful vineyards & fine Chateaux. A visit to the Union de Productuers de Saint Emilion is highly recommended. They vinify & bottle for a large number of the smaller Chateaux, their tour & wine tasting is free, that is until you decide to fill the car up with glorious wine from their shop!
There are many beaches within a short drive, the biggest of which are at Royan & St Georges de Didonne on the Côte de Beauté. A little further afield day trips to Archachon where you can see the Dune du Pilat ( the largest sand dune in Europe), Île de Ré, the famously beautiful island off the coast at La Rochelle & the Atlantic beaches of the Médoc Are within easy reach.
Travel 30 minutes through the vineyards of the Bordeaux appellation Cotes de Blaye, to the banks of the Gironde. Blaye is famed for its wine and the historic fortress Blaye Citadelle, part of the fortifications that protected the important trading centre of Bordeaux further downstream. The Citadelle is worth a day out on its own. The large Fortress was built in the 17th Century, protection from the marauding English! Now the Citadelle hosts a hotel, restaurants and boutiques selling arts & crafts. From Blaye you can also take the short ferry trip to the Médoc, another beautiful area filled with the vineyards & stunning Chateaux of this famed wine area.
Talmont is a beautiful fortified village on the Gironde estuary established originally by the English during the Hundred Years War. Talmont is now filled with arts & craft shops, wine cellars & restaurants. It lies about half way along a wonderful scenic drive along the estuary where you'll find many other lovely restaurants in the small port villages along the road towards Royan.
Angouleme is an ancient fortified town on the banks of the Charente river. The town centre boasts an indoor market, Chateau & Cathedral with many wonderful restaurants & shops. Down by the river you can hire kayaks and float down the river or relax on the man made beach areas.
