We have just returned from two wonderful weeks in this beautiful farmhouse, and it was quite simply one of the most relaxing holidays we've ever had as a family. The farmhouse was exquisite, with a great deal of character and beautiful tasteful decor. But it's the setting, the garden and the amazing pool that really made it for us - such a luxury to have such a stunning (and enormous!) pool all to ourselves. We lived during the days at the poolside, where there is a pretty little summerhouse (complete with large fridge-freezer, very useful), a BBQ and also the largest trampoline we've ever seen. The house comes with loads of little extras for the kids, such as British TV (!) and board games, and they absolutely loved it.
The village is very small so you need a car to get around. There is actually a small supermarket in the next village which was very well stocked, but we used the L'Eclerc which was a 10 min drive away. Pons itself is lovely (the restaurant at the Aire des Loisirs is fab for families), and there's a fantastic Roman amphitheatre at nearby Saintes. The beach at Royan is only 40 mins away, and we also went kayaking on the local river.
Linda was a great host - always on hand if you needed her, but otherwise left us to our own devices. She organised a very fun tour of the local Pineau / Cognac distillery, which we'd highly recommend. Thank you Linda!
P.S. if anyone finds a small green/blue earring, please do pass it to Linda - it's mine!
We have just returned from a 2 week stay at this lovely house with 2 children, 15 and 12 years old. The facilities are great especially the pool which our children loved. The house itself is a wonderful old farmhouse and has a great lounge and outdoor area where we spent our meal times. The pool is great with a deep end you can dive in and a pool house with fridge, BBQ and pool floats etc. which meant you could stay poolside without having to pop back to the house for drinks etc. The village is quite and predominantly agricultural in nature and there is a friendly shop in the next village where you can get fresh bread with 2 large supermarkets at Gemozac and Pons nearby.
The house is well located and within easy reach of La Rochelle, Rochefort, the beaches at Royan and is an hour away from Bordeaux which is well worth a visit. We found plenty to keep us occupied within an hours drive and were happy to spend pool days at the house when the sun was shining.
All in all this was a lovely place to spend our holiday and Linda and Stuart could not do enough for us.
I would have no hesitation recommending the house to friends and family..
Lovely week at Linda and Stuarts and I would definitely recommend it and we hope to be back again soon. The pool and garden are amazing and all the extra games /ping pong table etc kept the kids occupied. The house was well equipped and the kids loved the UK channels & DVDs which kept them busy into the evening.
Great value for money and we would definitely recommend this property.
We have just returned from our second holiday in this lovely property and will undoubtedly return again in the future. It really feels like a home from home.
The house is a traditional stone farmhouse, with nice original features but tastefully modernised. It is clean, well maintained and has everything you would need. There is a large garden and fantastic swimming pool, which the children would have spent the entire holiday in, given half a chance! A BBQ and fridge in the summer house was made great use of and the children enjoyed the trampoline and large garden to play and kick a ball around.
St Palais de Phiolin is a small, peaceful village, surrounded by fields and vineyards. There are no shops but the town of Pons is only a short drive away. It was a perfect setting to unwind, with only birdsong to be heard.
Our hosts gave us lots of ideas of places to visit and arranged a tour of a local Cognac distillery. We also enjoyed a lovely boat trip from Mortagne Sur Gironde and visited Talmont Sur Gironde, which was beautiful, Jarnac, Saints, Jonzac and the port and beaches of Royan and St George de Didonne. Provided you have a car, it is a lovely area to explore.
We would highly recommend this property!
