About the Owner/Advertiser, Ms Sam Allan

We have had many lovely holidays in France, but after a spending a glorious 10 days in the Charente Maritime in 2016, we decided to pack in the day jobs (working with young offenders and project management in construction) and relocate from the our busy lives in London to the French countryside. <br/>Sam is a keen runner, Stuart likes fishing and riding motor bikes. We both enjoy cycling. We would be really happy to share our local knowledge, so you can enjoy these or other activities in the area.

Year property purchased 2018
Why this location? We fell in love with the area around Saint Jean D'Angely and decided that would be the centre of our house search. After viewing La Petite Ferme Gites & walking around the delightful village of Dampierre sur Boutonne, our minds were set.

Dampierre is a lovely village, with a village shop that is open 7 days a week and sells fresh bread, pastries, freshly baked pizza and all the day to day necessities you may need.
The village cafe/bar, "Garage a Papi", is a quirky, chilled out place where you can sit and enjoy views of the sun setting behind the Chateau De Dampierre. The bar has indoor seating, but also has outdoor seating in it's large orchard, next to the river. Often musicians play on Sunday afternoons.

The shop, bar and Chateau are all less then 400m from the gites. We are rural but not isolated

We love the beautiful countryside, the tranquillity, the sunshine, the sunflowers, the birds singing in the evening, the cheese and wine and everything about life in rural France
Unique benefits of property La Petite Ferme Gites are in the heart of a village, but not overlooked.

There is a beautiful and newly refurbished 10 x 5 m heated pool, with ample sunbeds and parasols. The pool area is in the sun the for the whole day. The Farmhouse is one of 3 gites at La Petite Ferme Gites, the other 2 being The Barn (sleeps 2/4) and Fig Tree Cottage (sleeps 2). Each gite has it's own private terrace/eating area and bbq and do not overlook each other, so you can feel secluded. The guests do share the heated pool, games barn, sun terraces, lawn, laundry and parking. All three gites can be rented together should you require.

The Owner Recommends

Aulnay and St Jean D'Angely

Aulnay, a charming little market town, with it's bar, restaurants, shops, twice weekly market and large supermarket (Intermache) is an 8 minute drive, while the larger, lovely market town of Saint Jean D'Angely is a 15 minute drive. Here you will find a number of supermarkets, bars, restaurants, twice weekly market, Abbey and a cinema as well as a range of leisure activities such as karting, boating, canoeing and swimming. Both towns are on the Santiago De Compostela pilgrimage trail and have stunning churches and other historic buildings to visit. There are very helpful tourist information offices in both towns.

Asinerie du Baudet du Poitou (Poitou Donkey Farm)

On your doorstep! Five minutes drive from the gites is a charming farm that exists to preserve the local breed of donkey known as the Baudet du Poitou. Enjoy walks, a quiz, rides and a tour. The donkeys are beautifully cared for and your entrance fee goes towards their exemplary care! A very enjoyable afternoon in a lovely location.

We provide each gite with a large pack of information on the local area and have range of maps including cycle and walking routes that we can share with you.The local roads are virtually traffic-free routes through fields, woodland and villages. There are a number of local chateaux, churches and museums to explore. In the summer the local villages have a number of fetes and brocantes (antique markets) that are also worth visiting

The local towns - Cognac, Jarnac, Saintes, Niort

Stunning Charente towns worth a visit include Cognac, home of the world famous cognac houses of Martell, Hennessy and Reme Martin and an 18 hole golf course and Jarnac, a beautiful riverside town, home of Courvoisier. Saintes, Niort, and Angouleme are great towns for culture, sights and shopping.

The Marais Poitevin

The Marais Poitevin is alsoknown as as The Green Venice. It is a large area north of Niort which is a matrix of waterways through natural countryside. The Marais Poitevin is the largest of the three areas of Marais (marshlands) in the Vendée. During the early medieval period Benedictine monks began draining the Marais by building a series of canals and waterways. The Dutch continued the drainage work and built the Drogues (dykes) to keep the sea at bay. Coulon is a pretty little village to explore from and is 22 miles away. The area is great for hiring boats & bikes to explore, or just walking around.

La Rochelle

An iconic and beautiful city. It is a stunning and vibrant coastal city with so much to offer. A beautiful harbour, large Aquarium, great shopping, bars and restaurants. Lots of street entertainment in the summer season, day and evening. It really has a lovely feel to it. 45 mins drive away

The farmhouse was well equipped, clean and comfortable, there was a fantastic swimming pool with sunbathing and seating facilities; a games barn to amuse the whole family, including a pool table, table tennis table and a variety of other games and activities.
Set in an idyllic quiet village, with a beautiful chateau and a very charming local bar, which is a must visit while you are there.
Plenty of interesting places to visit locally, within easy driving distance.
Sam and Stuart very very accommodating and helpful hosts.
We will be going back again soon.
