About the Owner/Advertiser, Mrs Susan Wilcock

Hello we are Charlie and Sue Wilcock, and Le Petit Saule is the gite annex to our beautiful Charentaise farmhouse in the Charente Maritime. We moved here in 2016 and love the quietness and tranquility of the area, and the closeness of the beautiful beaches and estuary, we would love you to explore the area too.

Year property purchased 2015
Why this location? With its 460 kilometres of coasts, its many sunshine hours, and its important historic heritage, the Charente Maritime appeals to both the relaxation enthusiast and the adventurer. The gentle climate along with it’s beautiful fine sandy beaches, the various activities on offer in the seaside resorts, the oyster beds of the Marennes-Oléron, the Charente-Maritime islands, the towns full of architectural interest, the Romanesque churches, and the specialities of the area make it a wonderful place to visit.
Unique benefits of property We wanted to create an excellent standard of accomodation, which we would like to stay in ourselves. Le Petit Saule has this and more. We are rated 4*. We provide a fully equipped kitchen, so if you are foodies like us, you can enjoy the local markets and have space to enjoy the produce during your stay. Our comfortable accomodation also has a lounge area and private outdoor space to enjoy the ‘micro climate’ that is the Charente Maritime.
Our gite is situated in the beautiful Charente Maritime, on the west coast of France between La Rochelle to the north and Bordeaux to the south.
The hamlet of Fiolle is in the vineyards of Cognac, with the Bordeaux wine growing region to the south, and the Medoc across the Gironde estuary. Sunflowers abound during June and July, just a stroll from the gite.

The Owner Recommends

Domaine du Seudre Restaurant

Le Domaine du Seudre - Restaurant - Saint Germain du Seudre

Pizza - Ria. Pizza restaurant and takeaway

If you don’t feel like cooking then why not order a pizza from our local Pizza-Ria. A friendly cabin that also serves Pizza and grills on-site. You can stroll to here across the vineyards in 15 mins or go by car in 2!

1407 - Mortagne Sur Gironde

We like eating here on a special occasion, situated in Mortagne sur Gironde, just 10 mins by car is 1407. By the cosy yacht harbour. French cuisine at its best - fresh ingredients, perfectly cooked, beautifully presented. Really great service.
PLEASE NOTE THIS RESTAURANT IS CURRENTLY CLOSED

Royan - Violins on the Sand 20th, 23rd and 26th July 2019

There are classical and opera performances and major concerts of film, shows and popular music held on the beach at 10pm – and entry to the beach is free!

This annual festival of classical music takes place outdoors on the main beach at Royan each July and attracts tens of thousands of spectators over a three day period. It is undoubtedly the most popular and important ‘spectacle’ of the Royan tourist season and is certainly not to be missed.

You can book tickets for the formal seating (price about 30 euros per person in 2017) from the ticket kiosk on the seafront or online. Alternatively you can simply turn up and find a spot on the beach or the promenade to watch the spectacle free of charge on what will, hopefully, be balmy, starry summer evenings!

Cognac Jazz Festival 4-8th July 2019

Cognac Blues Passions is an eclectic music festival held annually in the heart of the eponymous French town.

Blues, jazz, soul, folk, pop and acoustic music take centre stage as the festival inhabits Cognac's beautiful public gardens for a week of shows.

The festival marked its 25th anniversary in the summer of 2018, celebrating a rich history of showcasing the finest musicians old and new, from legends like BB King and Ray Charles through to Massive Attack, Erykah Badu, Sting and Seal in recent years.

Pons and Donjon

Modern day Pons has some beautiful streets to visit, shops and a market. The Donjon is a must. It is 30 meters high, this Dungeon of Pons is undoubtedly the most imposing of the region. Discover a medieval universe and climb the 136 steps to enjoy a breathtaking view of the Medieval City, the Valley of the Seugne and the beautiful region. After all that effort enjoy refreshments or lunch in the nearby restaurants.

Saintes

Because of its noteworthy Gallo-Roman, medieval and classical heritage, Saintes is well worth a visit, and is a personal favourite. It has several museums, a theater, cinemas, and organizes numerous festivals. The European center of musical research and practice is in its Abbaye aux Dames.
Cross the bridge in the centre of Saintes to exlore the 'old town' centre which has an extensive pedestrian area with houses in the local white stone dating from the 17th to the 19th centuries. It is in this area of Saintes that you will find the most shops and restaurants, and the one half-timbered house that remains in the town (at Place du Synod).
The southern edge of this historic centre follows the Charente river. Walk along the Quai de Verdun for attractive views across the river to the Arch de Germanicus and to the island and park. Merlot our ‘ Epanual Francaise’ often has a walk here.

La Rochelle

La Rochelle is a coastal city and has been a center for fishing and trade since the 12 century. This maritime tradition is reflected in the Vieux Port (old harbour) and the huge modern Les Minimes marina.
The old town has half-timbered medieval houses and renaissance architecture.
The Vieux Port has seafood restaurants, the Aquarium, with sharks and sea turtles, and three medieval towers.
A bridge links the city to the Île de Ré a beautiful island to visit.

An enjoyable stay at a spotlessly clean and well equipped gite. Approachable hosts who live on site but are not intrusive. Lovely welcome pack and everything needed was available.
Recommend the local boulangerie and nearby restaurant for lunch. Nice beaches not too far away. Good wine and cognac/ pineau suppliers close by.

Owner response

Many thanks for staying at Le Petit Saule, we are glad you enjoyed your stay and the local
area. We hope to see you again. Kind regards Sue and Charlie
