L'Ecurie is truly the best equipped, and most comfortable property we've stayed in, and there have been quite a few! Add to this, the tranquility of the setting, yet with easy access to the Marais Poitevin- great for cycling days- , La Rochelle, Poitiers, Niort, and lots more places of interest, and our 10/10 ratings are explained.
John and Sheelagh made us feel very welcome, and were very helpful and informative, without ever being intrusive. It was a joy to watch the red squirrels and woodpeckers in the garden in the mornings, and a treat to hear the owls making their presence known in the evenings, while we sat on the verandah, having dinner, and a few glasses of wine!
We had great weather during our 2 week stay, and didn't spend much time indoors, the lovely verandah being a perfect outdoor seating area, but we would quite happily have spent time inside in cooler weather.Very comfortable seating, and interestiing local magazines were available to browse, -as well as the most comprehensive, and well-organised collection of leaflets and information ever-almost rendering local Tourist Information offices unnecessary.
We very much hope to return, some day!
Cottage exactly, or better than, as described. One would normally be wary of gites where the owners are in the same location (some people seem desperate for company) but no worries on that score with L'Ecurie. The owners are totally discreet and only to be seen in the distance deadheading roses and maintaining ancient Austins. (Mind you, when the corkscrew broke on the first night there, it was a great relief to have someone riding to the rescue.)
We knew the area from a visit many years before, so spent a lot of time finding old haunts, but, of places new to us, Chef-Boutonne was a star. A classic French small town with a square surrounded by a brasserie, two boulangeries, a boucherie -traiteur, mini-market (U-express - little general stores seem to have disappeared everywhere) and you can actually park there!
We got exactly what we wanted from our week at L'Ecurie, with the added bonus of the occasional hoopoe digging around in the lawn right under our noses. We would recommend the place to anyone looking to spend time doing not very much, very enjoyably.
Even better than it looked in the pictures. Gite is very spacious and clean with all you need to cater for yourself. Ground and gardens are fantastic, morning coffee sitting on the garden table below the plum trees was a rare treat ! John and Sheelagh were perfect hosts, very helpful without being intrusive. Highly recommend staying here. Great location for Cognac, Rocherfort, Ile de Rey and La Rochelle.
very good quality finish very well equipped
