A marsh area, made up of natural water channels and man-made canals, which stretches for miles. The area is often referred to as the ‘Venise Verte’ (Green Venice). The largest area of marshland on France’s Atlantic coastline and the second largest anywhere in the Country is full of wildlife. You can explore the canals and waterways by traditional flat-bottomed boats which can be hired from various areas in the Marais Potevin. Head to any of the ‘embarcaderes’ (piers/wharfs) to hire a boat for an hour or two, or half or whole day and with or without a guide. Or you can explore on foot or by bike (plenty of bike hire places). Some of France’s most beautiful villages are in the Marais Poitevin area – head to Coulon or Arçais to see the traditional architecture of the area, along the edge of the waterways.
With its four ports, La Rochelle is one of the most important French harbour towns, particularly for tourism. It has a unique atmosphere, with its historic port (Le Vieux Port), a quayside bustling with boats of all sizes, and a seafront packed with cafes, bars and restaurants. Pedestrianised streets are surrounded with 17th and 18th century buildings housing boutique shops selling everything from fashion to food. The town has a daily market which takes over the streets around Place du Marché and a stunning seafood market at Rue Marche. You can cycle around La Rochelle, using the yellow bikes that are free. You can collect your bike at Place Verdun between 9am-6pm. You will need to take identification. The first two hours are free, then it’s 1 Euro per hour. La Rochelle also has one of Europe’s best aquariums with more than 10,000 sea creatures on display – an evening visit in July and August is a great end to a full day in La Rochelle, as the aquarium remains open until 11pm. And there are Museum’s galore…. covering maritime, national history, perfume bottles, antique moving figurines, model transport vehicles and porcelain and paintings – you’re bound to find something of interest to you.

The owners, Julie and Simon, were very welcoming and did everything to make our stay really enjoyable. They were respectful of our privacy while always willing to give helpful advice when needed. Our gite was very comfortable with a lovely private garden with country views. The two lakes provided a serene backdrop with plenty of wildlife to enjoy. Trevor thoroughly enjoyed his fishing in the spacious larger lake where there are some good sized carp. The chickens supplied us with some delicious eggs. There are bar restaurants nearby where you can enjoy a delicious 4course lunch with wine for around 12 euros. The supermarket is only 5 minutes drive away selling everything you might need. A very relaxing and enjoyable stay.

Thanks so much for your extremely positive review. You taking the time to do a review is very much appreciated, as are your comments. Until the next time........ (and maybe we'll meet Bertie x)
This is the best holiday fishing in France we have ever had (and we have had a lot over the years !) the gite was perfect , spotlessly clean and extremely well equipped , our hosts Julie and Simon couldn't have been more helpful friendly and accommodating . The fishing was excellent with carp up to 30lbs, in a delightful setting, there were two well stocked lakes to choose from , deep in the heart of the French countryside , yet only a 5minute ride to local shops and amenities.
We would recommend La Germondiiere to everyone

Thank you so much for the review.
So glad that we ticked all the boxes for you both. It's our pleasure to have you here, and we really really really look forward to seeing you again next year.
We have to say that Simon&Julie were incredibly helpful to us.They gave us the best route to travel on the best place to stop overnight. On arrival they had put a welcome pack together for us that we had asked for which meant we could relax and not worry about going for provisions straight away. The facilities are clean and comfortable and they make you feel very welcome.Should you be going there to fish,I urge you to get some advise from simon on which baits to use or even take for that matter.Tight lines like we had and enjoy.
